I received the email from AT&T that describes how to complete the unlock process by restoring the phone in iTunes, but after the restore the iPhone is still locked. Anyone else having the same issue?

I wonder what happens to people who call up and it turns out that phone they bought on ebay or craigslist turns out to be stolen.. can you expect a recieving property rap?

Just got off the phone with AT&T. 0 wait time and the person I spoke to knew what he was doing so within 15 minutes, I had him unlock my iPhone 4S and my wife's 4. It should be complete before April 16 on both phones.

This is great since I'll be leaving the US in a few weeks for a few months.

So you are under contract, and you were able to get your iphone unlocked because apple had replaced the original iphone?

I don't see how you could get a 4S unlocked. It would still be under contract.

I recently got my 4S replaced by Apple so I have a new IMEI that isn't tied to any existing account. One of my lines is not under contract so I tied the new IMEI with that line, which then qualified it to be unlocked.

Update: I got the same from them and restoring is not unlocking the phone. Not sure if the IMEI number is on Apple's "unlock list". They didn't mention anything than to just restore the phone for it to unlock.

I just "Updated" to this thread mentioning the same. Tried restoring and didn't unlock. I wonder why everyone is being told that their phones will be unlocked by April 16. Didn't get anything of that sort told to me from the Tech support.

btw, they also unlock windows phone, just did that on samsung flash.(by customer rep)

btw people, you can have the customer rep to wait for the tech support line and have them to call you back. They did call me back without me physical waiting on line.

Found this on one of the Apple Support pages. Don't think its necessary to restore the phone for the unlock to take effect. See below:

- If your carrier has unlocked your iPhone, after connecting your iPhone to iTunes, you should see this message:
"Unlock*Complete. Congratulations, your iPhone has been unlocked. To set up and sync this iPhone, click Continue."

- After a carrier applies an unlock, connecting your iPhone to iTunes allows iTunes to unlock your iPhone.

So how do I know if it's unlocked?

I have an iPhone 4 and have been living in europe for the last year. Thought my mom had done the early contract termination and she thought I had. Anyway, we sorted that out with ATT and I've ben over here using the gevey sim. Works ok, but if i don't need it...

Is it automatically unlocked now. We should be in good standing with ATT after the mix up, so am I to assume it's unlocked?

Any trick? I tried getting my old 4 unlocked, and the guy I got claimed his supervisor told him the phone has to be 2 years old even if the phone is no longer under contract. Didn't sound right to me, but I couldn't get anywhere

Please help me

I bought a no-commitment iPhone 4 on an Apple Store in Houston, I don't have an account with AT&T, and I want to unlock my iPhone. I just called AT&T (1-800-331-0500) and they said to me that they had no idea about the unlocks, I don't know what to do, I live in Venezuela and it's not possible for me to go to an AT&T store, can someone that is in a situation like that help me? Please. I really want to unlock my iPhone!!

The phone costed me 700 $ (The full price), I bought it like that so I didn't have to have a contract with AT&T, because I live in Venezuela

I'm currently in China, and I've figured out a way (mostly). You can port your current phone to Google Voice, thus terminating the contract early, then reactivate your line on a different number within 60 days (or immediately when you call to pay the ETF, I assume). This should keep your account, but you can double check. They can submit your number for unlock because you've terminated the contract while keeping your number at the same time. I'm assuming you can port the number back to AT&T once all is said and done somehow. It's a bit complicated, but worth it if you'll be abroad for a long time. I've been using a Gevey sim and it's been such a pain, but I'll have to keep using it since Google Voice can't verify my phone while I'm here... (failed to receive the incoming call with my AT&T sim inserted...) Hope this helps somehow.

Just got off the phone w/ AT&T, dialed 611 to get there. Got in touch with someone right away, 0 wait time (maybe b/c I'm on an enterprise account?? I've never had wait time). They did some verifications to make sure my phone was eligible. Had to wait for a good 10minutes before I got connected to a tech that actually filled out the paper work. The tech estimated I would receive an email within a few hours with instructions as to how to complete the unlock. Was not able to get my new 4S unlocked, but the 3GS which used to be on that number was processed without a problem. This should come in handy for my next trip abroad. Thank you AT&T, finally.

Yes this would work. They have a log of the iphone's imei that ever used on the att account, so if you tie that iphone 4s on a contact ended line, you can unlock it.

hi there,

I'm from Portugal, a friend of mine just offered his iphone 4. I dont have the proof, and calling overseas it will be very expensive, is any way to contact them by skype or email?

Help please

Just use the google voice chat in Gmail. It offers free phone calls to USA

Well if everyone is being told they have to wait until April 16th...I might as well wait until then to give AT&T a call. No point in dealing with call traffic today

I thought of that actually, but hopefully more customer service reps will know that the unlock is possibly by then and I won't have to deal with as many dummies (okay there will still be dummies)

may be it just take few days to replicate the request in apple activation servers, thats why ATT saying wait for a week?

if you request next week, wait till the following week to get it unlocked?

The April 16th date was given to allow for processing time by the "unlock team". The rep I spoke with said it was possible it would be completed within a 2-3 days.

BTW, when I called to do this there was zero wait time. Just called 611 on current iPhone, asked for tech support, and then asked for an unlock on old phone. Whole process took less than 15 minutes.

same here .. the longest part was them running the IMEI to verify and putting me on hold.
