If your iPhone's on baseband 06.15.00, you can already unlock it.

I know that it is possible to do the unauthorized upgrade, but I don't need it to be jailbroken, just unlocked, so I'd rather have the stability and ease of the AT&T unlock because I don't need jailbroken programs. I only went with the jailbroken phone because I needed one that wasn't tied to AT&T for use in China. Just not sure how to go about getting the authorized unlock from AT&T and upgrading to the newest ios. Do I need to do the baseband downgrade to 05.13.04 mentioned here http://blog.iphone-dev.org/?

Since I bought it already jailbroken, I'm just not sure about which order I need to do these things (and whether or not I can do it without an active AT&T sim card or do it in China with my China Unicom sim installed)

Is it ...
1 - downgrade baseband to 05.13.04,
2 - download and install the new ios from apple
3 - call AT&T and ask about an unlock (if they reject me, just re-jailbreak)

or
1 - call AT&T and ask about an unlock
2 - downgrade baseband to 05.13.04
3 - download and install the new ios from apple

or
1 - downgrade baseband to 05.13.04
2 - call AT&T and ask about an unlock
3 - download and install the new ios from apple

or something else?

Hi,

I've been perusing this thread for a couple hours but still can't seem to find a definitive answer to my question:

I bought a jailbroken/unlocked iphone 3gs (ios 4.3.3, baseband 06.15.00) from someone on craigslist because I needed an unlocked phone that I could use in China. Unfortunately, I don't know which method the seller used to jailbreak it.

Now I hear that AT&T will unlock out-of-contract iphones. I'm 99% sure that the phone would be out-of-contract (I bought it a year ago, but the seller said he'd owned it for more than a year).

I want to upgrade to a new ios because since a recent upgrade of itunes, the phone hasn't been communicating with itunes very well.

I have never updated the ios because I've heard some people say that it could "brick" the phone and I couldn't risk that because I rely heavily on it for my Chinese studies. I also don't want to upgrade it and be stuck with a phone locked into use with AT&T since I'll be using it in China.

I have a few questions:

#1- If I call AT&T and ask them unlock my secondhand jailbroken phone, will they be able to do it?

#2 - Would I need to upgrade the ios before calling AT&T or afterwards? (or maybe the question should be - would I need to update the ios before or after connecting it to itunes)?

#3 - Would it make any difference if I do the upgrade while I am in the U.S. (I have no AT&T sim) or would it work when I return to China in a couple of weeks?

Thanks so much,
Kevin
#1 - I suggest just calling AT&T and asking them to unlock it, no harm in it.

#2 - You should not have to update the iOS but you need to connect to iTunes and sync.

#3 - Not sure, but you will need to put in another SIM card when you do the sync and activate the phone.

Thanks kiwi_nz. I should clarify. I want to update the iOS because the phone's also developed issues with synching music and movies onto it. I wasn't sure if AT&T could do the unlock while I'm running the jailbroken iOS on my phone.

If it's unlocked then borrowing my sister-in-law's T-Mobile SIM should work to activate it, right?

Downgrade the baseband first. Then restore it to the newest version of iOS which should be 5.1.1. Then call AT&T. If it's unlocked, you should be able to use it as soon as you plug in your T-Mobile SIM.

Yes your sisters SIM should work fine. I guess the question comes down to do you have to have the phone jailbroken, personally I have never needed it to be done so I can't comment. You can always select the last version of the iOS that can be jailbroken and upgrade to that version of the iOS, you can look around the internet and you will find the instructions and different iOS version available to download.

So start with a call to AT&T and see how you go.

could anyone help me?

hii can anyone help me in getting my 4s unlocked?
I dont have at&t account

thanks a lot

AT&T says my iPhone is not unlockable! Got errors foe IMEI

Hey, since im on baseband 04.12.01 , I attempted to unlock my iPhone with AT&T. I bought it from someone on craigslist. At first I tried doing it from my tmobile phone but the lady wouldn't do it and asked for original owner and all that. So since I dont have at&t, my friend let me use his account to get pass all the info stuff. I gave the guy the IMEI but after a long time he said he got an error but it doesnt say if it can be locked or unlocked. He then called the technical support and they also got an error but it does't say why. At the end he said my iPhone was not unlockable :(

If anyone can tell me why they got the error and what I can do next that would be awesome! Thanks :)

Wow- that's great! I wonder if Verizon will follow the same example. I don't need a different carrier but it would be nice to know I could unlock my phone without hacking it.

ATT just said my phone is unlocked after I sent them my IMEI number. Is there a way to activate the unlocked part without restoring my phone?

If you are jailbroken already, download redsn0w, run it, click deactivate but uncheck install Cydia. Then let it run. Then open iTunes. You should be able to get the Congratz your iPhone is now unlocked message.
