My 20" shipped this afternoon. I ordered Wednesday from the Apple store.

Wow lucky dog! I ordered my 20" at 6:53am PST on Tuesday and it's been stuck in "manufacturing" for over two days. Only option was BT keyboard/mouse on a State/Local Government discount.

Congrats anyway :D

Am I the first person here to own the new iMac Rev B in my hands? I just picked up the $1,299 version last night from the Apple store, after putting it on reserve. I was the last buyer to pick up the new model before all the new models were entirely sold out. Some of the customers came out of the store disappointed after hearing that I got the last one. I'm very happy with my new iMac computer. I'm new to Apple computer, after using PC for almost 10 years.

Very few Apple stores still have the Rev B new iMacs left in stock. If you are planning to buy one, there is something you need to know. Last night in the Apple store, the salesperson had the new model reserved for me, but he wanted and encouraged me to buy the older model instead. I told them "no," and I had to say "no" like over 10 times. I actually had to raise up my voice and shout out at front of his face just to say the word "no" in the end. So, the salesperson gave up on me and let me buy the newer model. So for me, it was a little difficult to get the newer model. Maybe the salesperson didn't want the last new iMac model to be sold very fast, because this one just arrived in the store earlier this morning. The store still has tons of old iMac models sitting at the back of the store waiting to be sold. (I've heard that you can get the 17 inch combo drive for only $999 for the older model)

I am a college student, so I got a $100 educational discount, which turned out to be $1,199. Total out of the door was $1,300, after all tax and the California recycling fee.

Some of you are curious about the fan noise. The computer is very whisper quiet. I don't hear any fan vibration noise. Maybe Apple already addressed this issue.

Actually, very few Apple stores have even gotten the 20" ones in stock to begin with. The 17"s have been around since Thursday at least.

That's pretty funny about the salesperson pushing the old ones on you so hard.

Yeah,

Our Apple stores did get in the 17 inchers, but no 20 inchers. MNine is sitting at the airport (according to FedEx), which is driving me nuts. Monday can't come soon enough.

My dad wants to do some switching of computers this summer. My sisters iBook has pretty much kicked-the-bucket: only certain programs work and the power cord and display connection are all messed up. He wants to give her his laptop (667mhz Titanium) and we are trying to decide if I should then give him my laptop and then I can get a newer one. He already has a dual 1.8Ghz G5 at home, so he doesn't need a brand new laptop, but I would really like to have a 15" powerbook. Our two options are:

a) He buys my computer for $1000 and I get a new 15" powerbook ($2300 because I want the extra harddrive and video ram) so I would be putting up $1300 myself

b) I keep my computer and buy a new iMac G5 (17", superdrive $1400) and he buys a new ibook when they come out.

I think option b gives us both the best possible computers. The ibooks now are more powerful then my 12" PB and when the new ones come out, they will probably have 64mb VRam with even better specs. I get the increased power I looking for, but get to have the portability of the 12" and he gets a much better laptop then he has now. What do you guys think? good plan?

Just ordered my 20" with 1gb RAM, 400gb HD and Bluetooth keyboard/mouse!!! Have to wait for 2 weeks though.... :( I was told that the stores won't even be having the new iMacs on display until late this week...eek...

Will get another RAM module from Streetwise or Crucial...Do any Aussies here have experience purchasing RAM from Crucial? Any comments regarding delivery and condition of goods would be appreciated...

Listen up all Aussie Imac Buyers - I purchased my imac on Tuesday night (2ghz 20in 512RAM, with b/t keyboard and mouse) and was a little annoyed when I saw that Streetwise.com.au's price was $70 cheaper! + their ram upgrade is only $99 not $185 like on the Apple store.

Streetwise rules! But we got EDU discount...saved almost $400 - extra money for some more RAM. Comparing 1gb RAM modules for Streetwise vs Crucial: how come the large price difference? Why is RAM more expensive in Australia?

1gb is AU$279 at Streetwise, compared to ~AU$170 at Crucial (surely delivery doesn't make up the $100 difference). Epowermac has them for AU$325 (almost double Crucial's price!). Don't we use the same type or RAM (rhetorical question)??? Sorry, I don't understand...can someone explain? Thanks...

still waiting...

it hurts to wait... still in manufacturing :-( Guy at Apple said hopefully by the end of the week.

That Ram price is a little strange - I looked at it all and can't work it out. Only to say that if I could get 1GB for $AU170, I'd have 2GB in no time! I'm sticking with two 512mb for a while because of the price of two 1GB sticks.

Keep us updated, all you Aussie Ram buyers.

Tiger preinstalled?

Hi Walter, congrats on being one of the first to get your hands on the Rev. B G5 iMacs.

I have a question for you (or for anyone who can answer it). Did Tiger come preinstalled on the system, or did the iMac come with an installation DVD of Tiger in the box? I plan on buying one of these iMacs, but I would like to buy one when Tiger comes preinstalled on the system.

Thanks!

Tiger is preinstalled and they give you a DVD of it.

The Tiger software is already preinstalled in the computer. Just plug in the computer and you're ready to go. It also comes with two Apple DVD softwares just in case I need to reinstall the original programs again.

Does that apply also to the internet/broadband? I have broadband with NTL on my PC, I had to install the broadband installer software first!

If I plug in my ethernet network cable without the software into my iMac, would I get access to the net?

Just getting all basses covered for when my iMac arrives (tuesday) :)

Tiger is completely internet- and network-ready out of the box. However, Apple doesn't install software for your proprietary broadband connections. It comes with the OS (Tiger) preinstalled. What sort of connection do you have? Is it an ethernet DSL or cable modem? If that's the case, you should be able to configure it manually from Safari or Firefox via a local IP (usually 192.168.0.1). You would input your username and password, etc. and then it should work without ridiculous extra bloatware on your computer. Your broadband provider probably didn't include any Mac software on the CD, so this might be the only way to configure it.

Yeah, a relo has an order in and they are saying 3 weeks because of the shortage of BT keyboards and mice...go figure

The longer you have to wait to get your new Rev B iMac, the faster your new Rev B iMac will get obsolete soon. :)

I get broadband thru my digital set top box, is that DSL? I would really like not to install the extra bloatware! is it possible (to configure it manually) with my setup?

If not, the software installer does support Mac OS 8.6 - 9.1

I assume it will work with OS X v10.4!!

Hey mauly, it should work fine with NTL.
I think the set top box will ask you to register your iMacs MAC address when you first try to use it tho.

It only registers it with the set top box tho, no where else.

I used to have an xbox and when I wanted to play xbox live I had to put the ethernet cable from my pc to the back of the xbox, then turn the digi box off and restart - They vice-a-versa to be able to surf the net...

Is that as simple as it would be for the iMac?

Do we have confirmation yet on if the problem the Rev A machines had with data speed concerning the hard drives (can't remember the exact problem, but read about it on Bare Feats) has been fixed or not?

It shouldn't be too much harder. Take a look at the box (it's probably a cable modem) and see if there's a sticker on the bottom or back that gives you something similar to "for advanced configuration, point your web browser to http://192.168.0.1" and look for an access code or password printed there, too. Of course, it's possible that it will just work with you plugging in. Give that a shot first before worrying about configuration :). Good luck!

If only everything was that simple!!! maybe my iMac will be a first!
