what kind of price range will these new ipods with video expect to fall within?

Personally, I think they'll do as they did with the photos at first, and they will be above the current price points. I'm guessing, perhaps $399 and $499.

However, I hope I'm wrong. My hope is that we'll see them start at $299, but I don't really see it happening.

Exactly when i see a regular iPod next to a Nano especially it reminds me what a brick it is....If it was trimmed down a bit it would be a much better piece of gear....I hope they drop the prices a bit too,

Yeah, and when i put my 4G iPod 20 gig next to a sony Discman, it reminds me of how much of a brick the iPod is....oh wait, no it doesn't.

I agree. I particularly find the 20 gig iPod, and the 30 gig iPod photo (now gone, but was the same size as the current 20 gig) to be a fine size. Sure, I won't mind if they make them smaller in future revisions, that will be great.

However, I love my 30 gig photo. The Nano is beautiful, and I admit to wanting one. However, I also enjoying have 10 to 15 times more storage, and it is only 2.5 times bigger.

I kind of feel the same way.. but once you begin to play with the nano, you feel that you just can't let go. I choose to use the nano over the 20GB..

Then you need to update your sig! :D

I wonder if they will change nano pricing when they release the new models?

They did that when it happened to the iPod mini, didn't they? I seem to recall the minis being criticized for their price when they first came out. Then, after a subsequent iPod update, the price went down. However, the timeframe was different than this (the intro of the nano vs. the rumored update dates). Who knows?

Please, no video

Ok, somebody has to say it, and it seems that's been my job lately...

If the new iPod finally supports true gapless playback, I may buy one immediately. However, given Apple's history of apathy towards this important issue, my bet is "no way". They don't care. :(

If the new iPod plays video but does not fix the gapless playback problem, I think I'll go postal and take Steve Jobs hostage until he personally fixes it himself!   There's no excuse.

Seriously, it's one thing to keep pushing the envelope and working on the next big thing for your product line. If video is it for the iPod, fine, but I have my doubts. Sounds like a gimmick to me, but whatever.

It's quite another to keep adding junk, err, extra unnecessary features to your product without fixing important, existing flaws. I know I'm in the minority, but I'm definitely not alone in wanting, or even expecting, gapless playback. The music functionality of the iPod is simply not complete until it can play an album of music just as well as a standard CD player. And for Apple to move ahead with a vastly more complex new feature without fixing this one, is negligent in my mind.

I, for one, hope Steve Jobs' recent comments regarding movie playback indicate that this update will not come with video capability of any kind. I want a flawless music listening experience. I'll worry about taking my video on the go when better tools and infrastructure exist to support it. That time is not now.

GET OVER IT!!!!!

Gapless playback would be nice. Listening to Pink Floyd (or even Green Day's American Idiot for that matter) is not as good of an experience as it could be.

Gap-less playback seems like it should've been a no-brainer. It really bothers me with my 1st gen 10gig. I thought they would've fixed it by now. Does the Nano have gapless playback? It being solid-state I don't see how it can't.

"iPod Movie" looks like it

As described to me by someone who has seen it... the iPod Movie rendering from Foocha's collection looks very close.

Was told to expect Oct 12. But it could mean Oct 11 for USA (I am in Asia).

My sources say Cool! Cool! to the product.

Everyone wants to quote Jobs saying "world is not ready for hand held video". What he is saying is that no-one has done it right- hardware, connects, content.

Guess if I am wrong I'll have to log on with a new username 'podhasbeen'.

Anyway, the'll still call me a newbie and won't let me post new topics.

I don't have an iPod (want one though). What is gapless playback? You want to hear one song start the same second the last one ended? CD's don't do that. They have a 2 second delay (my CD player even counts down -2, -1, 0... before the song plays.

Wouldn't bet on that.

The 970MP announcement listed speeds up to 2.5Ghz. I'm not sure on what Apple will do there. Will we see 2.7Ghz liquid cooled 970MPs, 2.5Ghz lower down or something else. Whatever, it'll top out higher than 2.3Ghz.
I'll predict 2.5Ghz on top, with no liquid cooling due to the larger chip size. Somehow I don't think they can hit 2.7Ghz. I saw where IBM couldn't hit over 2.1 in a Power5+, coming October 4.

They expect us to watch these sites hourly, post and ponder, eagerly awaiting the next thing that we just gotta have. It's mental illness I suppose.

End up broke and crazy but at least you'll be watching and listening to fav content on your Apple goodies.

Anyone who needs a Mac now.

Anyone who understands that the current Macs are probably fast enough for their needs already.

Anyone who needs the fastest PowerMac available for the next couple of years. 970MP should toast Intel for some time to come.

Anyone who doesn't want to invest in replacing all their software as well as their hardware.

Anyone who doesn't want to beta test software for Apple and it's 3rd parties for the next 3 years.

Anyone who doesn't buy Rev A Apple hardware.

Yes, I meet those criteria and I want a Mac now, essentially because I need a Mac now. It's all about timing for me and I know I won't be disappointed with a dual dual core Power Mac for years. By the time I'm ready for a change, I'll buy a Mactel.

The only thing I would regret is waiting over a year to get a new machine.

That's not true. PowerMacs aren't faster than Opteron's running XP 64-bit. With the exception of Nightflight, Opterons are faster in Photoshop, Lightwave, AE, Maya, every game, Cinebench and most real-world benchmarks. Dual Core A64's are even faster than dual opteron's. Even the Athlon X2 3800+ (2ghz) can tie or beat a 2.7ghz Powermac in Cinebench.

Apple is way behind at this point because dual core systems are selling very very cheap and giving much better performance than a PowerMac can (at a much higher price).

I can't argue with anything you're saying, mostly because I don't know enough about benchmarking and such. However, I would say that these results could change drastically with dual core PPCs.

Some cds have a 2 second gap between tracks, some cds do not. For example cds that have been recorded from a live event, anything electronic that has been mixed by a dj (house, trance, breaks, prog etc etc) and also classical pieces. For people who listen to these types of cds the extra gap that the ipod inserts is very frustrating, especially when listening up loud on a stereo or in a car.
