As described to me by someone who has seen it... the iPod Movie rendering from Foocha's collection looks very close.

Was told to expect Oct 12. But it could mean Oct 11 for USA (I am in Asia).

My sources say Cool! Cool! to the product.

Hmm, sounds like your source, who must be a friend also in Asia, works for the factory that is manufacturing the new iPod?

Be careful how much detail you give away on where you are, Apple legal may already hunting you down! ;)

Gap-less playback seems like it should've been a no-brainer. It really bothers me with my 1st gen 10gig. I thought they would've fixed it by now. Does the Nano have gapless playback? It being solid-state I don't see how it can't.

It's pretty sad that the PJB-100, which came out in 2000, had gapless MP3 playback from day 1, but 5 years later, Apple still can't figure it out. IMO, that's the iPod's biggest shortcoming. Obviously gapless is very possible, but clearly Jobs isn't interested in it or doesn't think it's that big of a deal. Makes you wonder if he ever listens to a live concert or any Pink Floyd on an iPod at all...hell for that matter, does he even use an iPod?

Cell is the future:

The future of what exactly? Are you saying this because the Cell technically has more CPUs? Because more CPUs doesn't necessarily mean more power. You have to have software very specifically written to support that kind of threading. You cant just slap 10 processors together and be 10x faster.

Firstly, IBM has a special PowerPC. It's far lacking in performance per MHz. It is the only IBM chip that runs at over 3 GHz. There are three of these in the XBox 360. Cheap little processors with a high clock speed.

The Cell has ONE 4 GHz PowerPC and four APU's. When they say "four core" only ONE core is a PowerPC.

The Cells are good at doing what they do - very specialized tasks very quickly, but that's about it. We don't WANT these in a PowerMac.

He doesn't. He uses a Creative Zen Vision and Napster to Go. It's the only thing he can get to work on his Dell running Windows ME.

I thought everybody knew that?

I've got just over 14GB of free space on my iPod Photo...so for the time being no go on a new photo....in point of fact the opportunity to purchase Apple Care for my photo is down to a matter of weeks....can't decide if I want to drop $100 on an iPod that has been working fine for close to a year...hmm

As for the PowerBooks....another speedbump in the winding down coil that is the G4....Nothing to see here...move along.

new but addicted...

Just joined, but I have been addicted to this forum for weeks now. I plan on buying a new powermac and powerbook b4 december. Just recently sold my pc and vaio laptop to migrate mac. Without a computer of my own i feel like i'm in freefall. I hope these updates happen soon, plus I don't think my girlfriend will keep letting me steal her ibook! :)

If they increase the FSB to 200Mhz, L2-cache to 1MB and make some other improvements, it would be a nice update. Add to that a new screen (hopefully), new vid-card and few other improvements, and you would end up with a very nice machine :).

PB's are very nice machines the way they are. Better screen would make turn them in to a truly kick-ass machines.

It's funny, cause I'm doing a whole lot of wishing with both my hands out. One of them is getting filled but it isn't with wishes.....

80GB and 40GB iPod's. Hardly anybody will max these out with music.

I would. Oh, wait - I did.

I want to carry all my music in my pocket and not have to decide which CDs to take with me in the car. Grab the iPod and go.

So, count me in with the "there will be video iPods" crowd.

Maybe I am just dense, but I cannot see a use for carrying around video in my pocket and watching it on a tiny screen. In order to make is useful for video, the form factor would be too large to be a music player worth carrying.

If the point is mere transportation of the video, can't you just use the iPod in disk mode and hook it up to a PC?

Date Significance?

Is there something special about the October 7/11/12 dates that have been floating around this forum? Is this about the same time as the iPod photos were released last year? Was there a special event surrounding the product intro, or did the announcement just "show up" on iLouge/Apple site?

but it USED TO!

I have a 1st generation iPod (5GB). I am pretty sure it did gapless playback with its original firmware, then I noticed the annoying gaps after one of the early updates. Can anyone confirm this? Of course, I could reset the firmware to the one on the CD that came with the iPod... I believe there was a FW reset utility on that CD.

I totally agree. I have a friend with a PSP and he was showing me how it plays movies. That has a much larger screen than an iPod and I was sooooo not impressed. A movie is something that I think most people sit down to and watch, not while jogging. I've watched movies on my PowerBook during flights and I find that not to be very enjoyable especially when then some freak is sitting next to you trying to watch it with you. The only situation I can think of that would be kind of cool is if it can easily hook up to a tv. Dock it in the bed room and watch a movie, take it to a hotel and watch a movie. Outside of that I can't imagine ever using a video iPod.

So far in this thread I've heard October 7 and October 12. Well what about October 27...........
............UK MacExpo London!
Apple have said that Apple sales have increased substantially more in the UK than the rest of Europe. So why not pay the Brits back with some new kit??

That would be a great use for it though, just have it support any QT7 supported video files (thankyou Handbrake) and I could plug it into my telly and watch movies whilst using my laptop for work. I don't have a stand alone DVD player and the video card on my iBook seems to be on the fritz - it won't recognise an NTSC/PAL connection via the apple composite/svideo adapter, it just says it's a VGA connection.

ipod partition

ok finding this site hard to use so just posting my question on the first ipod shaped thing here.
i'm running my ipod photo 30gb on my apple ibook g4 1ghz and i want to be able to use part of my ipod space as storage which i can use to transfer data between windows based pc and apple os x ones.
and so i thought that it would be a good idea if i could partition a small part (like 2gb) of my ipod to a windows friendly external disk.
i still want it to be able to play music and veiw photos aswell as a part of it for file exchange.
anyone have any ideas as to how i can do this without corroupting my ipod?
help!!!
thanks
mitchypoo (mitchell ashton :p)

Apple has to know that they could sell a lot of powerbooks if they put out a nice update. Its been the most talked about rumor since I started watching this... New PBs!!!

Slap in the best of the best, cause at this pricepoint, they expect and deserve it!

That's a very good point indeed!

Although going off topic [majorly] I seem to recall reading many moons ago that Mr. Jobs isn't too keen on the UK. For what reason I don't know, but I'm sure I read around these parts...

As long as you're not holding your breath. Freescale released something recently that suggested that dual-core G4 wouldn't be out until mid-2006.

An ipod video that can play on your TV would be just as revolutionary as the music version was! It would certainly change the way we watch videos. Just think, it would be like a portable dvd/tivo player. combo that with some good codec and you could carry around several full movies in your pocket without the need for a player. just plug into a TV or monitor and poof! certainly video podcasts would quickly follow. pocket home movies, portable theaters, pocket porn!!! can't wait! I'll take two! Right now I carry around a book of 30 dvd's so my 3 year old can be entertained, it would make my day if I could plop a bunch of movies/cartoons on my pod instead. hope it's true.

I'm gonna guess that you could/would watch videos by turning the pod horizontally. would use the video ratio more logically.
