Hoping that neither the 4.7" or 5.5" will be the flagship. Hoping it's the same situation as the iPad in which the only differentiating feature is the display size.

The 4S is not a bad phone, and unless you have little hobbies in life it will suffice. That's exactly the problem of this whole thing, people are so materialistic and want to get all the latest things, instead of a good product on long term. And it's not intellectuals or free-spirited people who think this way, it's the working class. People from the working class, wether they have become wealthier already or not, always need to define themselves with materialistic things, because they have nothing else to give. Apple used to be for normal people, now it's for chavs. If the 4S is so old Jesus used it, I'm wondering how old you are … perhaps we should consider replacing you …

Cool story, nerd!

Cool story, nerd!

My comment seems to have hurt your feelings, so apparently what I was saying was the truth? You see, a normal person wouldn't have replied at all to this … but you had to come up with something, something cool of course, such as: "Cool story, nerd!" to clearly show that others are the nerds, and not you.

What I find weird about the "Air" moniker is that Apple use it for their top-end iPad and their bottom-end laptop. In marketing terms, I'd have thought that's a mistake - are you trying to make Air a premium, quality name or an affordable, value name? Even if you say it's more about the thinness & lightness of the device not market positioning - the new phones are likely to be the biggest and perhaps heaviest iPhones, so why call them "Air"?

I also thought the choice of Air for the top iPad was strange. My thought behind the incongruence in the use of the Air name so far has been that they're planning to merge OS X and iOS so that one new operating system would be on portables and computers, somewhat à la Windows 8. This of course goes against statements to the contrary, but Apple has been known to say one thing and then change their mind later.

Macbook Air and iPad Air would both run the new combined OS (Air OS?). The iPhone Air, which would be the top-of-the-line phone according to the current rumors, would also run this new OS.

The Pro machines (Macbook Pro and Mac Pro) would still run the current version of OS X, and the non-Air iPhones would run the current iOS, but only with maintenance updates to their respectives OSs. This could also explain the meager or missing refreshes iMac and Mac Mini have been getting. The non-Air machines would eventually go the way of the iPod classic — kept around for a while without any real updates. The Mac Pro and possibly one model of the Macbook Pro might be kept around longer just to keep the appearance that they're still interested in the Pro market.

This is all completely imagined speculation based on nothing. But at least I have the decency to say so and not get paid for my crazy ideas (I'm looking at you, "analysts"!). ;)

They were doing it back when the iPhone only had a 3.5" screen.

Apple touched on similar themes when they launched the 4 inch screen. That they still believed the best experience came when a smartphone could be used properly with one hand, and they spent so long getting the bigger size right. They won't be making that one handed argument anymore with either the 4.7 or 5.5 inch iPhone I feel.

I'm totally with what John Gruber said last week - that I think even 4.7 inch is right on the limit of being too big. And that I too would probably prefer if Apple was to still spec bump the current 5s as an additional option (which he believes may still happen)

Just because something you say hurts another person's feelings doesn't necessarily prove that what you said was true. Also, your pseudo-intellectual pop psychology profile of "working class" folks who want the latest iPhone is bunk.

I think the report could be partly accurate...new iPhones get released in the U.S. on the 19th, and China on the 25th.

Last year the launch in China was the same day. My guess is that it is the 26th. Since the 26th in China is still the 25th in Cupertino, perhaps that's where the confusion lies. China will get the phone a few hours ahead of the US.

I don't understand why people are freaking out. In one generation the "I like iPhones but the screens are too small" argument will be gone.

I'll post again this photo

This sounds quite a likely scenario... apart from the Pro stuff being binned off... (I bloody hope).

Speaking impartially, even the LG G2 is better than the iPhone 6. KnockON, rear controls, large display - and then there is the G3. Not to mention, the Sony Xperia Z2, that is sexy, waterproof, has a built in FM Radio (useful when offline), a great screen, camera shutter release button, NFC etc. HTC One M8 and Galaxy S5 also come to mind.

Apple appear to have run out of ideas. They have launched a dumbed down slower iMac and done the same with the iPod Touch, which is Tim's way of dumping unsold stock of specific components. OK, wise, but where is the ground breaking? Where's the touch screen iMac or OS X tablet for artists or affordable compact (old style) Mac Mini for small businesses? Etc.

Be brave!

The iPhone 6 is much better than any of those phones.
I mean, if you're going to make up a comparison to a phone that doesn't exist on the market yet where no one knows the final specs, so can I ;)

Also interesting how you started talking about "new ideas" and "ground breaking" and then used slapping a touch screen on an iMac as an example. Unless they also make one that folds down horizontally, it's probably not going to happen, and if it does, it won't be groundbreaking in that form, just "arm tiring and screen smearing".

What worries me about this post is that they are already having troubles with battery life. Unless they have a major breakthrough of some sort... I think we can all pretty much expect mediocre to bad battery life at best with these new phones... As if the iPhone 5's battery wasn't bad enough...

Some of the replies here hilariously demonstrate what they say about people from certain parts of the world not getting sarcasm. Or maybe you really believe I was serious when I said Apple was essentially doomed if they ever launched a 6 inch smartphone, and that I'd immediately go from buying every product Apple puts on the market to literally buying nothing from them. :D

I'll be honest,I didn't even put that much thought into it. The fact that he remembered your name and the post was funny. That was the end of it to me.

The sources also claim that the larger 5.5-inch iPhone will be called the "iPhone Air", with the 16GB version selling in China for 5,998 yuan ($965). Meanwhile, the 4.7-inch version will reportedly start at 5,288 ($850) for 32GB, which is the current price of the 16GB iPhone 5s in China.

There's no suggestion that the 5.5" will only be available as a 16 gig device is there?

I frankly don't understand why so many of you boo-hoo a larger phone. I, for one, am getting up there in years and would welcome something that's a little easier for my eyes. Apple has locked up the teens, 20s and 30s thus far. Maybe now they're going after the 40+ population that hasn't been targeted so much. So I will most likely, if available, get the larger phone. And for those who have some kind of self-esteem issue where you worry so much about how you look to others with a large phone next to your head, then go with your bad self and get the smaller one, or stick with your 5 or 4. Your choice. Apple's got you covered there too. Us older folk don't give a rat's behind if you think we look rediculous or not.

I, like 99.99% of iPhone customers, also couldn't give two s****s what they call it. I buy it for its function - which is the primary reason I won't go to Android. Plastic, glass, sapphire, redwood, steel, recycled paper plates - I don't care what they make the back out of. So long as it does what it's supposed to do, the VAST majority of people are happy and will buy it. Based on Apple's iPhpone track record, "RIP Apple", "RIP iPhone" and similar statements are just nuts. Really.

I really hope Apple doesn't offer a 16GB model.. just to small in this day and age. maybe 4 years ago that was fine but not anymore with how big pictures and apps are getting. Man up Apple, 32GB minimum for all phones.

Yep, buttons on the back of a phone and an FM radio are EXACTLY what Apple needs to stay on top of the game! And I REALLY wish I could just punch my phone's screen to wake it up instead of simply pressing the little button that does it.

I agree, plus-how many people have Kindles (the e-reader, not the tablet)?

The answer is lots and lots and I've never spoken to or read anything about, Kindle owners saying they think the device is too big.

I guess some people just like to go against the grain and criticise something that is hugely popular, as they think that makes them "different", but what they don't realise is they are identical to all the other folks that like to do the same and criticise things that are hugely popular.

It always makes me laugh when people pull out the old "iSheep" card, but fail to see the irony that they are simply joining and blindly following the Apple knockers!
