HOW CAN THIS BE LEGAL?!! It is no different than the jailbreak versions... I can see AT&T still slapping major fines and anyone who uses it... and now they can track who bought it!!

WARNING!!!

WOAH there. First off, AT&T and Apple are partners on this whole deal. If one company does something, the other one has to agree to it. So, at this moment, there is either an agreement or a conflict.

If it is a conflict of interest between the two, an agreement will need to be made. Either apple will release a statement saying they'll refund the 10$ but you need to delete it or AT&T is in the right to charge you....or...

Apple bitch slaps AT&T and we all get tethering (as we should with the new price we pay)

Just think about the number of angry people there will be if AT&T doesn't comply....in rank from least pissed to most pissed...

1.) Apple
2.) Nullriver (all that lost revenue)
3.) The Consumer

If apple allowed us to use it, we can't be charged more by AT&T. If we are, I smell a lawsuit....

(someone will make the American lawsuit comment, just wait for it)

I'm downloading this now, as I don't have net out on the water where I live. However, I'm afraid that if too many people do this, then AT&T will wise up and do something to destroy my ability to (such as charging $30 extra a month for my occasional access).

This same situation is what led to my terrible iPhone 3G buying experience, where we were not permitted to enter the store, nor stand in the shade (outside of the line), and even though I arrived when there was only 3 people in line (and I had already obtained my ticket from that morning), it took me an hour. The year before, Apple sold me the phone and I activated it at home. This year, I had to wait for AT&T's blessing and an Apple tshirt to commuicate.

Why would this be illegal? Tethering a phone to your computer is not against the law as far as I'm aware.

Well it worked on me.

I bought it.

10$ for emergency bandwidth to me is like keeping a flash light and other spare items in the trunk of you car. You never know when you might need them.

Good luck with getting a educated answer. The general CSR at ATT don't know anything.

That's definitely been my experience. I just called and the woman I spoke with said "I actually believe tethering is allowed on this one." Right.... As long as you don't use your data excessively (as in going over the 5 GB 'soft cap') I don't think this will matter. She then forwarded me to Apple, and the rep there said "As long as it's on the app store, it's fine." I'd really only use the app occasionally when on the road, but it would be helpful when away from wifi.

It's not my fault it was available for purchase on the App Store :)

But seriously -- is it in the contract we signed? Was there a "THOU SHALT NOT TETHER" commandment in there?
Assuming they haven't changed the terms and conditions since agreeing to the initial contract, tethering is specifically off-limits: http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/articles-resources/iphone-terms.jsp (just search for "tether")

However, with Apple apparently giving their blessing to this software, it either means that an exception is in effect -- or that Apple is going to find itself in a somewhat uncomfortable situation. Any lawyers in here who can give some insight as to whether the customer can be punished in a situation like this?

I emailed Nullriver support yesterday and they just responded.

Hi, it appears to be back on the Store, I dont know what Apple is upto, or if it will get removed again or anything, its bizare
:DThats a salesman response.
EVERYONE HURRY BUY QUICKLY WHILE SUPPLIES LAST!;)

you can fool att

they might check browser agent to find whether you are using Safari, IE, FireFox or Opera..

change the user-agent string of your preferred desktop browser to iphone user-agent string ..

as long as you surf mail or IM that should be ok ...

not sure about file downloads..

No, but AT&T charges extra for this on other phones. iPhone users DID sign a contract saying they wuoldn't. So the question is, did Apple get a deal made where iPhone users don't have to pay it?

Or will you see an extra charge on your bill next month?

Or...something else?

So no, it's no against the LAW, but we really don't know what will happen if you use this for a month. None of us knows.

question. Since it is using the internet FROM the iphone does it still drain the battery on the iphone? Obviously you could always plug it into your laptop but that could be kind of annoying to always have to do that.

I'm sure it wouldn't drain an iphone in under 5 hours, but could it reduce the battery life to 8-10 hours?

Proxifier

For all those that want to get their traffic to go through this link, use a program called Proxifier. It will take all of your traffic and push it through the Socks5a proxy. It's really easy to set up and once going it will proxy every program you have running through it, so no setting up each app. WoW over iPhone3G anyone?

it should just use the 3G signal i assume.. plus some extra power maybe as the app is running all the time you're tethering

Not sure if this applies to AT&T's iPhone plans, but for the "unlimited" data plan I have, this is in the terms and conditions.

http://att.com/mediaterms

AT&T said:
Furthermore, plans(unless specifically designated for tethering usage) cannot be used for any applications that tether the device (through use of, including without limitation, connection kits, other phone/PDA-to computer accessories, Bluetooth® or any other wireless technology) to Personal Computers (including without limitation, laptops), or other equipment for any purpose.

And even if you have a plan with tethering,

AT&T said:
The parties agree that AT&T has the right to impose additional charges if you use more than 5 GB in a month. Prior to the imposition of any additional charges, AT&T shall provide you with notice and you shall have the right to terminate your service.

So it violates your agreement with AT&T if you tether your phone without having purchased a tethering plan. And even if you have a plan, if you go over 5 gigs, you're going to be charged. Here I was thinking "unlimited" meant unlimited, not 5 gigs. ><

But yeah, they probably won't find out if you tether unless you use it to download ridiculous amounts of data. There's stories of people that do it all the time and never get caught.

I got the App, but I'm waiting to use it until someone releases some sort of statement.

It's $39 though if you want to use it past the 31 day trial.

Nullriver FTW!

They're responsible for installer.app, connect360, and now this!
I love it!

If you don't have a tethering plan for, for example, a Blackberry, then AT&T pushes you back to a pay per use plan (even if you have unlimited data).

They probably will do the same for the iPhone.

It works!

It works and it's amazing!!! There's a library I need internet in and they have neither wired nor wireless there! Now, thanks to NullRiver everything's fine!
