Here's what AT&T says :

UNLIMITED PLANS CANNOT BE USED FOR UPLOADING, DOWNLOADING OR STREAMING OF VIDEO CONTENT (E.G. MOVIES, TV), MUSIC OR GAMES. FURTHERMORE, UNLIMITED PLANS (EXCEPT FOR DATACONNECT AND BLACKBERRY TETHERED) CANNOT BE USED FOR ANY APPLICATIONS THAT TETHER THE DEVICE (THROUGH USE OF, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION, CONNECTION KITS, OTHER PHONE/PDA-TO-COMPUTER ACCESSORIES, BLUETOOTH® OR ANY OTHER WIRELESS TECHNOLOGY) TO LAPTOPS, PCS, OR OTHER EQUIPMENT FOR ANY PURPOSE.

That implies a person cant stream music on the iphone either..
I'm guessing the rules have changed otherwise Pandora and AOL Radio would be against the rules too.
You missed the part that comes before that statement:

EXCEPT FOR CONTENT FORMATTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH AT&T'S CONTENT STANDARDS, UNLIMITED PLANS CANNOT BE USED FOR UPLOADING, DOWNLOADING OR STREAMING ..........

question. Since it is using the internet FROM the iphone does it still drain the battery on the iphone? Obviously you could always plug it into your laptop but that could be kind of annoying to always have to do that.

I'm sure it wouldn't drain an iphone in under 5 hours, but could it reduce the battery life to 8-10 hours?

You probably need it plugged into the laptop to work in the first place, so it's charging the iPhone. The battery is still powering the 3g antenna and processing the incoming data.

I only have a problem with paying $10 for something that is free if you jail break (which is also free.) It also comes free on Windows Mobile phones. I don't know about Palm or Blackberry.

Yeah, but configuring the socks app from installer.app wasn't the most user-friendly thing in the world. This is basically click-and-go.

You may want to try to get into mail by going as far as you can in Safari and then click show previous page once or twice; you should see your mail; that's what the jailbreak tethering does on my MBP using the 3G iPhone tethering.

Can I FTP with Fetch?

I'm a freelance photographer for a handful of newspapers and currently have to FTP my photos back to the papers from a Starbucks or other hotspot.
I've heard that some people are having trouble getting some programs to work on their laptops with Netshare... such as mail, and AIM..

Has anyone tried using Fetch or any other FTP program with it??

The odd thing is that the iPhone makes mail and web surfing so easy and nice already that it would really have to be a special situation for me to go thru the process of using the tether. It was so much more valuable when phones were crap.

Same here. I am covered 99% of the time, but while I was at my aunts house I need to connect to our server via SSH / VNC or pcAnywhere and could not.

Go it

Well I got it. If it turns out to be illegal, I'm hoping I can get my money back. I mean, if Apple is offering it in their store, and they know that it does, why should I be held responsible?

We'll see I guess :p

Soo.. did anyone else read that as "use more than 5GB of data and you can get out of your contract? :D ;)

Like that matters. As of this week's California court ruling, consumers have the right to terminate a mobile contract without the early term. fee. The telcom's are in trouble. I don't think it will be long until we see more European type protections in a lot of these arenas.

I bought it, used it, and it works fine. I'll probably use it in a bin in the future.

well this might stop the crying of "WHERE'S FLASH????" since now they can see flash through a notebook :p

The jailbreak tether app is better because it wont stop working if you get a phone call. This is nice in between jailbreaks though.

Mine works

OK I had to do this, because you never know when I might need it (emergency). So it will sit all nice and quiet on my phone (like home owners insurance) . And sometime down the line when I need it, it will be there. Because if I need it, I'll pay the price.

I agree 100%. I bought it mainly as a novelty and to support Nullriver, but I don't see myself using it very much at all.

How could this possibly be illegal? ATT/Apple doesn't care if you use this. You signed a contract saying you would not use ATT's data plan for tethering. They will just charge you. Nothing criminal about this.

I see in the instructions it says how to set up your mac. Could i use this with a PC? If so how would i go about making it work?

I haven't been able to set it up on a PC running Vista Ultimate. If someone figures this out, please share.
I sent Nullriver and email asking but they didn't answer 2 seperate emails on their Tuner App. so I'll just have to wait and see.

I guarantee that if a bill showed up you could just simply call ATT and tell them that you weren't aware of the charges and they would remove it. stop living in fear people!

I'm trying to think of something I could say that would be more misleading.

Smoking isn't bad for you?

"Judge, I bought the shovel I killed my wife with at the hardware store, how can that be illegal?"

In my country of residence, the providers have clear limits on the amount of data included with an iPhone plan. They vary between 100 MB and 1 GB per month. Every MB on top of that costs $.1. If somebody starts downloading 5 GB per month, it is going to cost him at least $400.

I'm gonna laugh when they remove the app again and you didn't get a copy. ;)

Look, either AT&T will allow it, in which case it will be there next week, or they won't, in which case I'm sure 2.1 will "break" this app. In that case, you just wasted $10.

So either way, I see no downside to waiting a week and seeing how this pans out.

Actually it works over the wifi, not the cable. "Tethering" is now a misnomer.

Exactly!

Well it worked on me.

I bought it.

10$ for emergency bandwidth to me is like keeping a flash light and other spare items in the trunk of you car. You never know when you might need them.

This is the way I see such apps. Pretty much a solution when you have no other. The only thing you could ask for is a more general solution.

What is notable with iPhone is that I've greatly reduced my need for that laptop anyways. Actually very pleased with 3G even with all the current Apple bugs.

Ugh..

Ugh... I hate buyer's remorse. I'm starting to wonder if buying this wasn't such a good idea.

Tethering, cool!

I downloaded from iTunes syncing now with iPhone. Too bad it takes SO LONG to backup the phone during the sync. Here's to hoping Apple will soon address the buggy 2.0 firmware and iTunes 7.7 issues. 1.1.4 was much more stable.

Waaaaaahhhhhh!!! Have u ever had such great integration between mobile, desktop and Internet experiences? They'll work out the kinks.

Doh! I thought it said 99¢, but whatever…

read the contract, its not "unlimited" and specifically forbids tethering:rolleyes:

Unofficially if you are using laptop connect, and you go over 6GB a month they don't really say thing, but I don't know about the other plans. The official cap is 6GB…
