2 FW800 ports. It's not every day I get to correct you :)

The full count is 2x FW800 and 2X FW400 (one of each on the front and back) for a total of 4 FW ports.

Apple list "Four FireWire 800 ports (two on front panel, two on back panel)"

hmmm a bit expensive but hasn't that always been the case with Apple? I mean people will be getting top quality both hardware and software wise so no need to bitch about the "spicy" prices ;) I must say though that i would appreciate more ram at the base model!

Anyway, since i am not in desperate need for those new processors and it is not like i need the 4 firewire ports i think i might be better off with the iMac :D

2006 Mac Pro - $2,499 Two 2.66GHz dual core ($690 per processor) $1,119 + processors
2008 Mac Pro - $2,799 Two 2.80GHz quad core ($797 per processor) $1,205 + processors

2009 Mac Pro - $2,499 One 2.66GHz quad core ($284 per processor) $2,215 + processor
2009 Mac Pro - $3,299 Two 2.26GHz quad core ($373 per processor) $2,553 + processors

Please explain Apple.

I'm quote sure that your prices for those CPU's is 100 wrong. Where can you get Nehalem-Xeons for that cheap? Answer: you can't. the CPU's in the new mac pro are the best and fastest CPU's Intel currently has.

Godgem is correct. The 15" MBP has been updated with the 2.93GHz upgrade.

And both the Macbook and Macbook Pro 15" have the option for the 256 SSD now.

If I was buying a Mac Pro, I would be VERY disappointed with this update. The stock graphics card alone is insulting, let alone a $2300 computer with only 3 gigs of Ram.

Surprised no one has mentioned, but there are new Time Capsules and Airport Extremes. Dual-Band built-in and also the ability to have a guest wifi connection as well.

I sold my 1st gen stock Mac Pro on eBay for about C$2300 in Jan. I think upgrading to the baseline might be worth it for me with the EDU discount.

I was hoping to see the matte option trickle to the 15", seems Apple is standing firm on that decision. It's moved all of the black boxed products to white boxes, the "pro" line is basically a thing of the past.

Great find SydneyDev! Also looks to require 10.5.7, so we should be seeing that one relatively soon. I'm very interested in upgrading my Mac Pro's 8800GT.

Remember when you could get an entry Mac Pro for $1600? I do. Mind you, these new ones are, more or less, based on a design SIX YEARS OLD!

Whatever Apple is smoking, I wish they'd share it with the world, it'd make this whole global economic meltdown seem like just a fantasy world.

GT120 in A MacPro and no pro video cards ? What an over priced joke. That's it. I'm off to Newegg to build my own workstation.

Apple are using two ranges of Xeons.

The Xeon 3500 range which have prices exactly the same as the Core i7 Nehalems and the 5500 series which are more expensive.

Xeon E5520 2.26GHz - $373
Xeon X5550 2.66GHz - $958
Xeon X5570 2.93GHz - $1386

Xeon W3520 2.66GHz - $284
Xeon W3540 2.93GHz - $562

System Diagram Explains

The system diagram for Nehalem based systems should explain why the 2P Mac Pro can support an additional 4 memory slots. Nehalem has the memory controller on-board the CPU die, so with only 1P, only 1 bank of memory is available in the system. The QPI connections between the CPUs does not flow through to the memory bank. If CPU0 needs to access memory in the bank connected to CPU1, it would need to go through CPU1. Welcome to NUMA.

As for performance, it's been well documented around the web the tremendous instructions-per-clock advantage that Nehalem brings to the table, combined with the vastly improved memory sub-system. This is not an incremental improvement, despite the middling benchmarks. This is a step-wise change in performance. The software still needs to catch up to take advantage. One only needs to look at the price premium Nehalem boards and chips command, and the fact that the Core 2 is still in full production.

The most disappointing aspect would be the absence of 1) Pro 3D options, and 2) dual/triple 16x PCIe.

No 3.2 GHz option? (They got early release in exchange for no 3.2 GHz?)
No Quadro FX option?

Yeah…

That SP option doesn't look too bad…besides the price. I guess the "real" Mac Pro was way too expensive for Apple.

It says 18x SuperDrive…was that available before?

so going forward they are just going to release new products no more keynote??? that sucks

I don't think anyone wanted to go on stage, they might have been booed off of it.

There is a difference between premium pricing and insanity. When your base PowerMac/Mac Pro baloons in price $1200 over a 5-yea period and your 8-core option gets a $500 price increase (with a slower CPU) its far beyond insanity. This is "we're the only Mac OS X computer maker and we'll charge you what we want because you don't have a choice" territory. I'm sorry, but there is no reason to buy a non-mobile Mac anymore. Apple is in a completely different universe from the desktop user.

Pretty horrible update considering the massive price increases.

Schiller is pretty much flat out lying about the price drop considering Apple already sold a quad core for about the same price. They just switched the quad from the "stealth" bto model to the new baseline, which I consider a downgrade.

So now the cost of eight cores went up FIVE HUNDRED bucks? Unbelievable. I have been waiting since last fall to buy one of these but I never expected such a huge boost in the price. So is apple selling the previous models at reduced pricing? I haven't been able to find them yet.

At the very least they could at least let you bump the RAM back down to 3 gigs, or upgrade to 3x2. 6 is nice, but 6x1 is really dumb in a machine with 8 slots, you're going to end up throwing some of that out down the road if you want to go much higher. I'd

Still $50 for wifi card? Really? And now add an extra $30 for the mini adapter to run a second monitor.

These look like solid machines, but such a big price increase is VERY hard to swallow, as well as the downgrade from 8 to 4 cores on the base model.

No more Quadro video card option?! That's VERY bad. A lot of CAD software requires a Quadro or FireGL.

Yes, the previous Mac Pro shipped with 18x drives.

Slower CPU? I suppose you haven't looked at the performance charts.
