Don't buy Apple RAM

Goto ramjet.com get it cheaper but not sure if the new mac pro ram is available there yet. but it will be soon hopefully, I bought my ram from them a year ago cheap as hell and it's still working to this day.

Remember when you could get an entry Mac Pro for $1600? I do. Mind you, these new ones are, more or less, based on a design SIX YEARS OLD!

Whatever Apple is smoking, I wish they'd share it with the world, it'd make this whole global economic meltdown seem like just a fantasy world.

Uh... if the enclosure is your only basis for change. The inside has changed rather significantly over the past 6 years. Any one of the platform changes G5 --> Core --> Core 2 --> i7 is trivial. The most Nehalem also seems to have moved the PCIe onto a riser so the CPU sockets, bridge, and memory slots can slide out of the enclosure.

So now the cost of eight cores went up FIVE HUNDRED bucks? Unbelievable. I have been waiting since last fall to buy one of these but I never expected such a huge boost in the price. So is apple selling the previous models at reduced pricing? I haven't been able to find them yet.
But isn't a Core i7 faster than 2 Xeons?

Oh wait, those are from the Nehalem fanboys…

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5H11 Safari/525.20)

What is with the new apple keyboard - no more number keys again!

I certainly won't be buying at that price point and I sold my harpertown to buy one of these. In the UK we have seen it go from £1712 for 8 x 2.8GHz to £1899 for 4 x 2.66GHz

No processor is going to be twice as fast than the old generation at same frequency. But this is still the biggest jump in performance compared to earlier Mac Pro upgrades. I remember 2008 Mac Pro wasn't that much faster than 2006 Mac Pro.

Benchmarks anyone?

Anyone have any concrete benchmarks?

It seems to me if the Nahelem processor press is to be believed, the new Mac Pro Quad-Core 2.66ghz base model will MORE than equal and actually smoke the previous eight-core Xeon 2008 Mac Pro.

If that's correct that equals a DROP in price correct?
2008 Mac Pro $2775
2009 Nahelem Mac Pro $2499

I'm just looking for some benchmarks before I jump to conclusions...

Fanboys? Hardly. Do your homework and look at some benchmarks. It's not across the board, but for the target markets it wipes the floor with Core 2 Xeons. Target markets being HD, 3D, DB, and photo.

Huh? What are you smoking? Using the same case does not make them the same machines. The architecture in these machines is considerably more advanced than the $11600 model you mention.

I don't think 4 cores can sweep out 8 cores in any case. If the application you use is using all 8 cores, then your previous 8 core machine should perform better than the new 4 cores. But most applications don't even use double cores. So I'm mostly wondering about single core performance of Nehalems.

Eleven Thousand six hundred dorras!!!!!?? :D

I'm not sure if this has been posted (at least, I didn't see it), but aren't the Nehalem-based Xeon processors multi-threaded? As in, can't a quad-core execute 8 threads at the same time (as opposed to Core 2's 1 thread-per-core)?

http://www.apple.com/macpro/performance.html

Only the synthetic tests, the Maxwell Render one, and the Mathematica one show anything close to 2x.

Yeah they do, but 2 threads aren't as good as 2 cores.

If anyone wants to claim that I want to see a link to the benchmark.

And I'm VERY curious how these new machines benchmark on real world apps, specifically LOGIC.

You're looking at the wireless keyboard, which hasn't had number keys for a while. The standard one still has them, so nothing has changed with either version.

And it requires 10.5.7...a little premature APple or is 10.5.7 coming this week??:D

I think the only reason that card having a long shipping estimate is that it requires 10.5.7 to run, which probably won't come for at least a month. We got the first developer seeding just last week. Even if the card is ready to ship, apple won't be shipping it since it won't run. Same with iMac and 4850. That also has a 4 week estimate.

Something I noticed they took out (sorry if this was already said), but you can't add SAS hard drives any more. I doubt I'd ever be able to afford them, but still, some people may need the performance increase.

One other thing, anyone know about the xServe? Just curious.

Wretched.... completely wretched unveil this morning.

I agree that Apple never planned to make a stage unveil of these updates, the crowd would have rushed the stage with pitchforks and torches placing the heads of Apple's Executives on pikes and screaming in tribal chants.

The only real good update was to the Mini today.

The iMac saw a bait and switch with the addition of TWO NVIDIA mobile graphic chips.

These prices in the Mac Pro line are absolute jokes for what you get and don't even get me started on the mini display port on the graphics cards. YOU HAVE TO BUY A SECOND CARD TO RUN TWO APPLE LCD PANELS?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Link please? I've looked for benchmarks but haven't found them yet.

If the new quad is really faster than the old 8, then I'm willing to forgive quite a bit more.

UK prices are pretty crazy. Using the HE discount I can get a new 4-core model for £1595. Last year I bought my existing model for approx £1600 with a better graphics card (8800GT) and that was with 17.5% VAT as opposed to 15% VAT! An 'equivalent' 8-core machine would now set me back a cool £2100. I was thinking of upgrading, but not any more. At most I might buy the upgraded graphics card.

My bet is that these prices will be revised in a few months time after the price of the processors comes down somewhat. In any case I'm not buying at the moment.

screw ramjet.... they are most of the time the most expensive of all third parties....
