Hmmm now I want to buy it..:D (should I wake up my wife and buy it now....) good thing I can still afford it with the price increase..:D:D:D just limits the extra hd etc. anyone know how good the gt 120 is yet? Maybe today we'll have some benchmarks floating around
anyone notice you can get the 24" now...

Apple Displays

Connect your Mac Pro to a 24-inch Apple LED Cinema Display, which features a built-in iSight camera, microphone, and speakers, or a 30-inch Apple Cinema HD Display for the ultimate widescreen canvas.
Note: Connecting two 24-inch Apple LED Cinema Displays requires an additional NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 graphics card. Connecting two 30-inch Apple Cinema HD Displays requires a Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Video Adapter.

2006 Mac Pro - $2,499 Two 2.66GHz dual core ($690 per processor) $1,119 + processors
2008 Mac Pro - $2,799 Two 2.80GHz quad core ($797 per processor) $1,205 + processors

2009 Mac Pro - $2,499 One 2.66GHz quad core ($284 per processor) $2,215 + processor
2009 Mac Pro - $3,299 Two 2.26GHz quad core ($373 per processor) $2,553 + processors

Please explain Apple.

the 2.66 xeon is actually $958 but you are correct with the 2.26 prices

Well I'm in line for a new Mac Pro as my one is going to another collegue. Was just going to be the same as what's in my sig. Work delayed (ie. they were lazy) Oh well - guess I'll have to have the updated Mac Pro now :D

I don't understand why the max RAM on the quad is 8GB, which would be 4x2GB. Shouldn't it take up to 16GB, 4x4GB?

Remember these i7 CPUs have an auto-overclock feature. In my PC, the nominally 2.93 CPU runs at 3.2 most of the time. This is referred to as Turbo Boost on the Apple tech specs page.

It overclocks only if it detects a cool enough temperature in the case. So the 2.26 might really be closer to 2.5 in a well ventilated case like the Mac Pro.

$50 more to buy a second GPU, which would be the better option considering the problems with the Dual-DVI adapter.

These refreshes are so bad I want to cry. I expected the bloomfield/ gainestown split, but I didn't expect the massive price increases. I take it whatever deal Apple had with intel is over. The Quad core model is a Core-7 with ECC memory support at twice the price. The entire line has two less DIMMs per CPU than everybody else all due to inflexibility of Ive's design team. Kudos though to the engineering department. With the slide out memory/CPU tray, once gain you've created a incredibly useful solution out of the severe limitations placed on you by the design team. Lastly, being limited to one display port display? Come on.

Shame the 2.9 GHz Octo costs $5899.... isn't that about 1.5 times the cost of the 3.2 Octo?

This update just makes me really glad I bit the $800 upgrade to the 3.2GHz when I bought my Mac Pro. The new one is showing a 1.9x increase in floating point and 1.5x in integer calculations. Not enough for me to want to spend $5500 for the high end.

Ends up being only 1.2x faster in the Photoshop CS4 tests.

The new interior looks nice, but I think the interior of my Mac Pro is wonderful too, I've never had an issue upgrading anything.

I pose this question: Will current Mac Pro owners be able to benefit from any of the new graphics cards?

The 2.26GHz sohuld be about as good as the old 2.8GHz, worse on some things big improvements on others. But it is not good value. Both processors cost less than one of the old 2.8GHz quads. These offerings are a disgusting way to treat customers.

PCI Express 2

Question for the techies:

Is the 16 lane PCI Express 2.0 slot (... still slot not slots) slot 1 and was this true also in the late 2008 8 core Mac Pro too.

Wait a minute, you have to spent at least $3300 to to get the option to go OVER 8 gigs...I don't like this split between Quad and Octo.

$225 upgrade for 8 gigs of ram? wow, not bad Apple not bad. (For EDU sorry.)

You think $3300 to go over 8 GBs is bad? I remember the days when RAM was over $1/MB (yes, MEGAbyte). If you want a deal, go to dealram.com

Shocked

Very surprised that they plated these Mac Pros with GT120 which is just a 8600GT rebranded. That card goes for about ~$100. Don't even get me started with the entry model being only 1 CPU (4-cores) and a UP TO 8GB ram. Appears to be a downgrade to me.

You need to recheck your Nehalem Xeon prices again.

I wonder if Apple is making two separate motherboards - one for the quad and one for the octo. It would explain the huge price disparity.

That would suck if you buy a quad expecting to put a second processor in it and find that it has no second socket.

Overall I think the MacPros are WAY overpriced. The single socket quad should be way cheaper than $2500. Hell, they could sell a quad with an empty socket on the mobo for $2200 before, but they cant sell a quad with probably only one socket and cheaper ram for less than $2500?

What's the major difference between the Xeon 5500 and Xeon 3500 range of CPU's?
