I'm going with mind-blowingly satisfactory.

Lots of good updates and new features. Unless i missed it, app organization is a glaring hole. I was really looking forward to some sort of categories feature a la my 8 year old palm pilot (though of course slathered with :apple:ness).

Spotlight is the stop-gap for this. It'll return apps in the search results.

I'm guessing Apple was working on this 3.0 update before the Pre was announced.

No need to guess. It's a fact.

Anyone that says 3.0 was a reaction to the PREEEE simply does not know the first thing about software schedules or how software is developed at major corporations like apple , microsoft etc...

and should prob. stay clear of making statements that are downright laughable as such.

That marlarky may travel on treocentral.com, but it will be called on and shown to be wrong on this forum.

most of the 3.0 'features' should have been there in the first place. so no, this isn't mindblowing. just LONG overdue.

its not mind blowing, its average. The only thing i'm looking forward to is Search in iPod really and maybe see what the devs can do with the new apis. Other than that I don't care for horizontal keyboard, mms, and all that nonesense, all of that should have been from the begining, copy and paste is ok, I wont use it much.

Give me new iPhone 3 with better screen 480x800 PLEASE.

Anyone with 3.0 installed...

Do text messages still pop up the same? Are there any features to keep them hidden or just show a number badge on messages when one is received rather than having it pop up?

I'm aware of using the passcode lock functions to hide the message itself, I'm just wondering if you can complete stop the pop ups now.

I think the features that have been added are bringing the device in line with other phones. This is a direct defense against certain phones scheduled for release in the first half of this year (HTC Touch Pro 2, Nokia N97 & Palm's Pre). This move make perfect sense to me.

As for the software, yeah I'm disappointed that we aren't seeing anything major and "new" for the industry, but it's great to see these features being added.

I think it sucks now for developers who've been working hard on Apps only to find now that they will need to be re-written in 3 months to work on the new OS, but hey.

I think adding a voice recorder was a dodgy move though, because it removes the need for users to download such App from the App Store, thus limiting some peoples revenue from already created / selling Apps.

I think my fav new feature will be the Landscape Keyboard of all things. Seems minor, but will definately make using the iPhone that much better for me.

Off Topic slightly, the event itself has only strengthened my opinion that we will definately see new hardware come June, and hopefully even more new features that they haven't shown us so far.

Good work Apple.

I think apple did a good job on this update. My question is that what are the 100 features that they are saying? Do we have a list of the features? Can somebody make one? In laymans term. What is p2p transfer? Does this mean we could transfer files via bt to other devices?

Off topic though how's the batt life of the iPhone? Heard a lot of complains and was wondering what were you doing to drain the batt life so fast?

UPSET!!! I am glad they did a few wanted add ons, but for a business phone I am uspet at one major thing.

No Invites in Calendars!!!!! Come on Apple!

I have never seen a phone company offer updates for a 1.5 year old model of their phone. Be happy to be getting any updates. If this was an HTC variant WinMo phone, you would have gotten only 1 update during the life of the phone to adjust carrier settings. Nothing else. My guess is that a lot of people on these forums are new to the game and don't realize how everyone else has done it for ages. Same people who complain about having to shell out more than a buck 99 for an app when the equivalent on another platform is $15. Come on people, stop being spoiled little brats. You bought your phone 1.5 years ago and in smartphone tech that is like last century. Be glad that you are getting all the updates except for 2.

Aside from your name calling (which will instantly and forever make people oppose you), I agree. I always had to pay for WinMo updates IF they even made one for the current phone. Often they didn't... Nevertheless, the Apple update is 4 year or more old tech on a 1.5 year old phone. Hard to be very enthusiastic EXCEPT that we ARE getting the updates free and pretty darn regularly. More than one major OS update is unheard of on Win Mo phones and that is what makes me really enthusiastic about Apple's device. The updates just keep on coming. Apple is taking its own sweet time, but the iphone is getting sweeter and sweeter. This is the first, ever phone I've kept for over 6 months much less over one year.

EVERY SINGLE DAMN THING we asked for, IS there. WOW. What do you guys think?

Um... if you vote mind-blowing, you fail.

"Every single damn thing we asked for" are either a) features that phones in the same class have been offering for awhile now, or b) features that could have easily been implemented AGES ago *ahem* landscape SMS and mail *ahem*.

That is basically the textbook definition of "satisfactory". An example of mind-blowing would be an electronic toy/device sold with "batteries included". Why is that? Well, the vast majority of this class of items are sold without batteries, so to include them is above and beyond the norm. I mean think about it, if you saw a big bright balloon graphic on the box that shouted "BATTERIES INCLUDED!", you'd be like "Whoa, I don't have to buy batteries, whoa, that's unbelievable!"

You better just pray that they do some MAJOR optimizations before June. It's slow as **** right now.

it is very slow right now especially in texting, but come on people! do i need to go define BETA for you people! its SUPPOSED to be slow and laggy and ******! if you payed the 100$ just to brag then downgrade. BETA is for true developers to test it and improve upon it! JEEZ

How is it mind-blowing at all? By now I have gotten used to sending pics through emails via carrier addresses (and have all of those addresses are saved) and I have been using Clippy for a while.

I am not "disappointed," but I am definitely not 'mind blown.'

Honestly, I am not too excited. As others mentioned some stuff should have been there to begin with. Apple do anything insanely unusual. I think Multi-tasking should be an option in some ways. I don't mean run an application in the background, but being able to keep an application you're using open, while opening SMS to reply to a text would be nice.

Not really. It's pretty amazing that all this new functionality is encapsulated into a firmware update (a free update, I might add). Typical firmware updates are limited to bug fixes. This is basically going to double the functionality of the iPhone, so I would say that it is actually a lot more than a satisfactory update.

Double?!?! What do you just use your phone as a paper weight?

Not really. It's pretty amazing that all this new functionality is encapsulated into a firmware update (a free update, I might add).

First of all, it's not firmware, it's an operating system (after all it's called the iPhone OS and as referred to as the iPhone software). The distinction isn't very absolutely, but roughly firmware provides basic functionality for the components whereas the OS provides the features of how to use these components. For example, the firmware allows the device to communicate with the WiFi antennae, but the OS makes it useful, i.e. allowing you to join WiFi networks, etc. I've never paid for a firmware update. I've paid for new operating systems, but the difference between 3.0 and 2.0 is not analogous to the difference between Windows XP and Vista or OS X Tiger and Leopard. iPhone OS 2.0 to 3.0 I would say is comparable to Windows XP service pack 1 to XP service pack 3 - a free upgrade.

...new functionality...

New... to the iPhone. What makes it non-spectacular is that all this functionality is essentially default for the class of phone to which the iPhone belongs.

This is basically going to double the functionality of the iPhone

Yep, and pretty much make it on-par with everything else of it's class. A2DP Stereo bluetooth, MMS, copy/paste, tethering (technically not even available yet), global search, voice memos, Turn-by-Turn GPS - all old news to the smartphone category.

It's always nice to get additional features, and it's definitely much more of an upgrade than 2.0 was, but it's a stretch to call "iPhone OS 3.0, now with smartphone-comparable features!" mind blowing.

Double? What are you talking about? These "new" features should have been on the iPhone firmware 1.0. Please don't tell me cut, copy and paste needed to be invented for the iPhone or MMS was too hard to support.

What's mind-blowing to me is 47% of poll respondents saying these mostly routine new features are mind-blowing.

You folks are easily impressed.

It wasn't mentioned at all during the event other than multiple calendars. But I saw someone mentioned here that it had the invites after finding a post with it.

I've very much amazed with the iPhone 3.0.
Reading the review made me drool. lol
I never thought they added pretty much everything
the users wanted. I'm glad that they really listened.

Just can't wait to get one for myself.

Frankly, I found the most impressive "ground breaking" announcement is PtP over WiFi. Everything else is what it should have had in the first place.

Satisfied, but mind not blown.

if it had everything in the first place then you would have nothing to look forward to or moan about !, jesus the iphone is awesome, and will continue to be awesome, thats why we have one right !.

Well at this moment I'm definitely more than satisfied, but 3.0 is not yet mind blowing. Many of these features should be in the iPhone 2.0 or even 1.0 to begin with. I'm not saying Apple isn't doing a good job. From what they shoed on the Dev Preview they are making these features actually better than their competitors. And when 3.0 is actually released this summer, I'm sure it'll be mind blowing because as we all know Apple will give us MORE in the actual release (both software and hardware, hopefully).
