Debateable. I'd say at this point its an evolving tech. With MMS now on the iphone id wager a pretty penny that devs are going to come up with new implementations no one has even thought of before.

I was never a fan of MMS, even on my old Nokia 3595. The only pics I ever got was my gf at the time sending me pics of her when we were in a long distance thing. Other then that, I never used it.

I agree it should have been implemented on the original iPhone, but it never bothered me that it was left out. I could care less about it being added also. Email is much more useful then MMS, and now I know a lot of consumers who get their email on their phones, that they access on their comps. In essense, one email with a picture can have that picture accessed on the phone and computer, making it twice as useful as an MMS.

I mean, I'm young and most of my friends have blackberrys and iphones, so obviously if your talking about sending pictures to an older non techie with an old nokia, then I can see your issue.

Cut and paste though is a whole different story.

Probably not a great day to say that. You know, on a day where Apple has talked solely about adding new features to old hardware.

They've made so many changes with the iPhone since it's launch, yet ignore something as basic as this. And then when they finally fix it, they screw over the original iPhone owners. I would probably only use it a couple times a month, so not having it isn't a big deal. It's the principle.

They are adding features to both the original and 3G iPhones, but you will notice, the 3G is the one getting all the features, the original only gets the features it can "handle".

They claimed it was a technical thing, and that the radio could not handle MMS in the original iPhone. I know it has EDGE, so I find that suspect.

However, to claim that it's the principle of the matter is kinda over the top. I mean, you knew it didn't have MMS when you bought it, and there was NEVER a guarantee that it would get it, so why are you mad when your 2 year old phone does NOT get it? When you were never promised that it would?

And if you didn't know the iPhone didn't do MMS when you got it, that's your fault, cuz it was beaten to death with the Copy/Paste thing online on every review site.

I understand it is a feature that probably should have been included in the original phones release, but it wasn't. So how did Apple screw you? They never said it would be added. And it was never a given that it was ever going to be added. They didn't lie to you.

It seems like the majority of people upgrade phones when their plans expire anyway, this is no different.

That's fine when the phone is free or $20. But a smartphone that costs $400 or $500 (the original price, I paid $300) ought to be able to keep up with the times...or in this case, catch up. The lack of MMS for iPhone 2G in the 3.0 software is just wrong and I believe it's purely marketing BS.

The cost of going to iPhone 3G is about $560 to get comparable service:

$200 for the phone
+ $240 ($10 more per month for 24 months for data)
+ $120 ($5 more per month for 24 months to get 200 messages)
_________
$560

I don't believe that a cellular radio used in a $300 smartphone built in 2007 is inferior to a cellular radio used in a free LG "dumbphone" from 2003.

Yes, I want MMS. My friends and I actually use it (well...I used to use it). But, it's not worth $560 for technology that some say is already "obsolete."

I think the thing that really ticks me off is not that they won't include MMS for the iPhone 2G, but that they use a BS reason instead of being honest and saying "we simply don't want to." If they were honest about it, I still wouldn't upgrade, but I wouldn't be bitter about it. Honesty goes a long way with me.

What "old phones" have copy and paste? I would think this would be a touchscreen only catagory where it would work well. TOuchscreens just hit the main road in 2008. So how could "old phones" have all these features?

Windows Mobile and other smartphones have had this for years. I've had a touchscreen smartphone since around 2004 that had copy and paste functionality. You just have not noticed...

However, to claim that it's the principle of the matter is kinda over the top. I mean, you knew it didn't have MMS when you bought it, and there was NEVER a guarantee that it would get it, so why are you mad when your 2 year old phone does NOT get it? When you were never promised that it would?
It's because they upgrade so much stuff. And they even upgrade the 3G with MMS. So it's not that they just don't upgrade the device. And it's not that they don't have the ability to do it. They just choose not to (like NT1440 said) because they can.

Now if the device is actually not capable of it, then I wouldn't be upset at all. But I find that extremely unlikely. My old Razr could do MMS, so why can't my original iPhone?

I have never seen a phone company offer updates for a 1.5 year old model of their phone. Be happy to be getting any updates. If this was an HTC variant WinMo phone, you would have gotten only 1 update during the life of the phone to adjust carrier settings. Nothing else. My guess is that a lot of people on these forums are new to the game and don't realize how everyone else has done it for ages. Same people who complain about having to shell out more than a buck 99 for an app when the equivalent on another platform is $15. Come on people, stop being spoiled little brats. You bought your phone 1.5 years ago and in smartphone tech that is like last century. Be glad that you are getting all the updates except for 2.

I want one

These updates are seriously making me reconsider getting one (was opting for touch but with the online dependance and lack of wifi spots in the UK ill need the iPhone) especially with the update in summer and so is my b-day.

A lot of the under-whelmed people on this thread should remember that although the features are available on other phones that they usually aren't done to the same quality as the iPhone (though would love a better camera) nor are they found on the same device. Also that Apple is still a baby in the phone business and is bringing a lot of the OSX features to iPhone.

The games themselves are making me stray from Nintendo's dominance of the HH market (iPhone is so much better than DSi) the micro transactions are a good update to the gaming service but whenever this occurs in games its more enjoyable if the purchases dont give an unfair advantage to the poorer players. E.g weapon/ammo stockpiling in a FPS.

I found myself genuinely surprised at some of the innovations i saw such as the blood glucose monitor and the leave trombone game.

Like others have said, mind blowing in that it has addressed every. single. thing. that I've missed and been waiting for. I cannot wait. :)
You better just pray that they do some MAJOR optimizations before June. It's slow as **** right now.

i think 3.0 is going to be ok. most of the stuff that people have been complaining about prior to 3.0 i couldn't care less about. the only things i care about in 3.0 are landscape, search, peer 2 peer (even though i can use this, i'm on a 1G iPod Touch, i like the idea), and push notification.

I agree that 3.0 has come fantastically executed features! I can finally use my BT Headphones for music!

The beta, imo, sucks at the moment, but it's a beta, so hey, who's complaining?

I'm pretty pumped for the final release, it's going to be well worth the wait!

Well Apple tried to do away with the floppy (MMS) by including the CD drive (email). However many people are still on the floppy mode so Apple is adding the floppy mode for the slower people.

I couldn't agree with you more!! I remember back when Apple eliminated the floppy, I was like WTF, they gotta be kidding! I haven't touched a floppy disc since!! They are the leaders of innovation for a reason! I think they gave in to the pressure finally because of all the other phones startin (trying) to catch up.. MMS ehh Its cool and I will be glad to have it but email was fine with me for those type of messages. (It will be nice not havin to explain it to all my blackberry friends who ALWAYS bring it up!) The only thing that will make me mad is if AT&T charge more for MMS when every other text plan has them included!

It's cool when Apple gives us what we want, instead of forcing stuff on us. Mind you, that is also good sometimes but doing fan service is great. And that's what I took from 3/17, giving the population their requested features to make the device that much better.

3.0

Can anyone add me to their dev accounts so I can get 3.0, I am having troubles getting it on my own account?

Well with the "100" new features and updates I'm sure I'll be happy when I do update. But so far, the confirmed changes are things that should have been on the phone in the first place IMO.

Yessssss we can copy and paste!!!11elleventy

Everything being introduced in 3.0 should have been there since the beginning. It isn't mind blowing, It was mind blowing that these things have not until now been available.

Wow, MMS! Too bad the iPhone has been mocked since 07 for not having MMS.
