wait, you expect a device made in september of 08 to continue to be the latest and greatest?

Things get old and new models are made, thats technology. And why were you expecting a download now from an event that was clearely labeled iPhone OS 3.0 PREVIEW!?

nope. i bought a device in august because Apple told us that notifications for iphone would come in september.
i'm saying that is not state of art because the OS looks outdated not the shape of iphone or the hardware;

it would be OK if some functionality come today to iphone and not by a 3 month span...

You want them to release an unfinished beta just so they can get something out the door?

Thats how you end with things like.....failed push.

It's definitely a great update, though there are still a lot of things missing or at least they weren't mentioned:

- to-do sync
- wireless syncing of media (although that might come when they introduce 802.11n)
- video recording (might be hardware dependent also)
- playlist as an alarm
- smart groups for address book
- all mails on iphone with content spotlight search
- folders on home screen

But as others have said, I expected less, so that's a good thing.

What the heck is wrong with some of you semi charmed spoiled brats

They could have announced that the update would cause your iPhone, iPod Touch and all of your old Newtons to crap gold bricks and you guys would still complain and say...Welllll uhhh the earth already gives us gold....Uhh this is satisfactory.

I defy anyone who can find a better phone with better features that are knit together as well as the iPhone is. With real app's not webapps ahem Pre.

But if you don't like the iPhone because your WinMO or Symbian phone had all these features in some half a** sense then go back to your phone of choice. People complaining because Apple is just getting to this stuff will probably make apple never want to update things for us. I mean when was the last time you had downloadable updates on any WinMo phone that added features like the iPhone updates do. Or anything more than just a few minor bug fixes.

For hecks sake, quit yer bit**en and be happy that the worlds most advanced phone is getting updates.

Props. Its a solid update. in fact, the most solid update to the iphone yet.

A solid update of features that other phones have had for ages. Finally, the iphone is getting them. I am pleased, but the elation from other people puzzles me. They act like Apple just now invented all this stuff.

My main reaction still is: Its about damn time.

I voted blown away, but in reality, this upgrade is just putting the iPhone where it should have been all along.

I mean, MMS, Copy and Paste and Voice Notes is stuff a lot of older phones could do.

But they are also adding a lot of other really cool stuff.

I am excited and I can NOT wait till this comes out.

Going to be a long 3 months or so.

true, but at least now, we can have closure.

tbh, the biggest "feature" for me is the intro to spotlight! I can finally just TYPE IN the damn song i want, instead of having to scroll through endless songs that start with "I want to..."

This is apple. They are going to do this existing tech the apple way. It will be more useful and/or better integrated.

so yes its mind-blowing, but also kinda like...why i am so excited abt old technology?

Here's why for me: It may be old technology, but it was always on the wrong hardware and on the wrong interface.

The concept of an iPhone, when first launched, was nothing new. Hell it didn't even 3G initially. Other phones did some or all of the things the iPhone did. But people bought it because what it did, it did right.

Even with the currently available OS, the things it lacks are outweighed to its users by the things it does well. So one would hope that even with these features being added, the elegance continues.

People on the forums and tech blogs lose sight of fact that it's not about what the iPhone does, but how it does it that keeps people using it.

Hi all, new iPhone owner here & cripes, I really like this thang! :D

I have a question(s) tho'.

Im still in my 30 day trial period & can still return the phone without penalty.

Im guessing ( & it is a guess ) that the OS 3.0 is for all iPhones & my 2nd gen iPhone has all thats needed to take advantage of OS 3.0. Um, right!?

Also, does anyone think there will be any hardware upgrades this summer that would make it worth waiting for?

Any ideas as to what hardware upgrades might be in the works?

What "old phones" have copy and paste? I would think this would be a touchscreen only catagory where it would work well. TOuchscreens just hit the main road in 2008. So how could "old phones" have all these features?

I love it.. No I hate it... Wait, I love it again...

Let's all complain until we are blue in the face about the iPhone not having certain stuff...

Ok, now that the iPhone is getting all the stuff lets all complain about it being old/archaic/dated whatever and should have been there to begin with...

COME ON PEOPLE!

Lets do this.. Lets be happy that we will now get all the bells and whistles and it will be wrapped up in one device that looks good, sounds good and keeps our attention. How many phones out there have all the stuff and are anywhere near as enjoyable to use, play games as well as, have the excellent app store, have the slick UI or nice form factor of the iPhone? I for one am thrilled that most all the major gaps are going to be filled in now and don't really care that it took this long to happen. I'm just happy to finally have them and can stop looking at other phones to fill the voids.

I'm disappointed about the fact that they introduced MMS. I don't want to pay more every month whenever I get a picture message by somebody who doesn't know that I don't have a MMS plan.

Right now, at least I have texts and it comes through text.

But, I'm not all that mad because I still have a EDGE version.

I love my iPhone and I'm happy to see added functionality.

Some of these updates I just can't wait to use, especially the new searchlight and landscape keyboard. (I came from a Blackberry Curve and I still type with both thumbs, thank god the iPhone spellcheck is awesome, or else it would be a ducking mess!)

Push has a lot of potential but I could care less about MMS. I think copy and paste will be great, especially if you do a lot of web browsing or emailing. I think one other thing that will be nice is turn-by-turn on par with the low end Tom-Tom. That would be heaven.

Now managing all this stuff on the battery will be an issue, but if you want all this stuff, you need to sacrifice somewhere.

Failure. Where's my MMS? I'm sure Apple is trying to get people to buy a new iPhone in the summer when their contract runs out, rather than just keep going with their original iPhone. But there's a better chance I switch to a different phone now. It's crazy how one company can do so many great things, yet disappoint so greatly at the same time. My razr from 5 years ago could send picture messages, but my iPhone still can't and apparently never will be able to? Ridiculous.

much better than the upgrade from 1.1.4 to 2.0. I am axnious to see what kind of hardware upgrade we will see with all the great additions with 3.0.

How can people not realize by this point that apple DOES NOT DO LEGACY.

It seems like the majority of people upgrade phones when their plans expire anyway, this is no different.

I realize it, doesn't mean I'm ok with it. I don't want to be bullied into buying a new phone. Which is what Apple is doing by keeping out basic features that pretty much every decent phone has had for the last 5 years. There was no excuse for MMS to be lacking on the first day the original iPhone came out. No excuse at all.

Who doesn't upgrade to a new phone the contract expires????\

MMS is so important to you that you will switch to a different phone?

Really?? MMS is a dying tech.

Sure theres an excuse, its BECAUSE THEY CAN.

This is the way many many companies work. I'm 17 and I've figured it out, it might be time to get with reality. They arent going to keep adding new features to old hardware, this is the tech world, the original iphone is almost a dinosaur now.

Apple is doing what most companies do when releasing new things, making incentive to get one and ditch the old.

It may suck for end users, but its great from a business sense.

But you went ahead and got one anyway, knowing it didn't support MMS, so what's your problem now??

Really?? MMS is a dying tech.

Debateable. I'd say at this point its an evolving tech. With MMS now on the iphone id wager a pretty penny that devs are going to come up with new implementations no one has even thought of before.

Probably not a great day to say that. You know, on a day where Apple has talked solely about adding new features to old hardware.

It may suck for end users, but its great from a business sense.
And which one of them am I?

They've made so many changes with the iPhone since it's launch, yet ignore something as basic as this. And then when they finally fix it, they screw over the original iPhone owners. I would probably only use it a couple times a month, so not having it isn't a big deal. It's the principle.
