Well, you bought your stuff when the economy started getting sour, hence why it's cheaper. :p

I bought ALL my stuff from Newegg BTW, which at the time, they had stuff much cheaper than everywhere else. And still to this day, they continue to have some of the best prices for computer components.

Yes, a Geforce 8800 GTX was $650 when it first came out, and I was one of the few who jumped the gun and bought it. And man was it smoking fast when it first came out! I was able to run EVERY game at max settings. This was before the Core 2 came out, etc. I had an Opteron 285 OCed to 3Ghz, etc, before upgrading to a Core 2 Quad. Ever since the economy went sour, everything's been MUCH cheaper. Pretty much half price for everything.

I think in total, just for the Core 2 Quad upgrade, I spent about $1500 (includes new case, memory, motherboard, processor, old 8800 GTX, etc). I haven't had any incentive to upgrade to a newer graphics card yet, as my 8800 GTX has lasted for almost 3 years now. ;)

Yeah, the economy does help, but I'd say it's more so that all of my components were about mid-range when I bought them. :)

I've been piecing PCs together since the 386 days -- using them much longer -- and prices in the consumer areas, at least since the Pentium days have been fairly consistent. My Mach 64 cost about the same price as my GF2 Ultra, then my 6800 Ultra. Now I can get a GTX 295 for about the same price. My GTX 275 was bout the same cost as my 9500 pro from 2003. But CPUs are certainly cheaper now, considering we can get many for the price of one. :)

I like Newegg, their prices have always been fair and much better in recent times. But, their prices about 5 years back were usually on the high side, but unlike the shops I used to buy from, they're still around. Pricewatch was my friend for years. I still check it, but now days the participating shops are all about the same. What's scary, is that Microcenter, a retail shop that was always jacked up in the past, has had some of best prices I've seen on CPUs. My friend bought an i7 920 for $229 two months ago.

Your GPU seems to be a reference point for PC developers right now, which is cool. I personally don't think this will change anytime soon. Probably not for another 2 years, not with the current consoles keeping PCs in check.

I know unboxing pics are already up, but here are a few more just for scale. Sorry for the quality. Only have an iPhone for a digital camera so far.

Looks nice! I'm jealous. I decided I'm just going to wait 3 weeks until I go back to college since 2 of my best friends have PS3's. Can't really justify buying one now. Keep the pics coming!

Street Fighter IV - classic
Tekken 6 - it's Tekken
Grand Theft Auto IV - classic GTA
inFamous - play it twice
Resident Evil 5 - gotta love RE
Skate/Skate 2 - I'm a skater
Rock Band 2 - good friendly fun

You forgot:

Uncharted (Uncharted 2 comes out in November I believe)
Ratchet & Clank
Killzone 2
Metal Gear Solid 4
Resistance
Motorstorm
Call of Duty 4 (maybe World At War too :p)

And lots of others too.

Anyway, that slim looks mighty sexy! Like I said before, stuff always looks much better in person than they do in pictures! AHH I guess I might have to stop by and see if Best Buy has any today. ;)

iFixIt has already disassembled the PS3 slim. Linky:

TEARDOWN!

Still has that massive fan! It's sexy though, and definitely guarantees that it'll last longer than your average 360. ;)

Bringing my bluray player I recently purchased back to Walmart today and going to pick up the slim! I already have the original 60gb version but I wanted a bluray player for my room and this is only $125 more than the standalone bluray player I bought so why not.

And typical Microsoft has just slashed the price of the Elite to $299.99. Absolutely typical

Just for fun ... apologize if this has been in this thread already. C|Net's Crave blog did a power consumption test of the PS3 slim vs. the PS3 first gen. God, the PS3 first gen used a lot of electricity.

THAT IS AMAZING! I'm amazed they were able to keep power usage UNDER 100 watts! Does anyone know if the PS3 slims use a 45nm RSX or 65nm RSX? I only heard that they shrunk the Cell to 45nm...Can you imagine how much power this this would use if the shrunk the RSX? Proabably around 50-60 watts! That's crazy!

It seems like a fairly power hungry device in general.. I was surprised by how much electricity it uses to play a BD. The revised PS3 actually consumes about as much power as the low end iMac C2D 20" at CPU max, with the screen and everything (reference)...

It is a competative market after all.

Haha I know, I just wanted to see what it was like to be one of those super-fanboys that put down everything Microsoft does :p

If anything, it peeves me that it always seems to be just after I purchase something that there's a price slash - picked up a Pro console a couple months ago, would've gotten the Elite had it been the price it is now! :D

I think the RSX is probably the most power hungry out of all the components. You have to remember the low-end iMac C2D has integrated graphics, which doesn't suck anywhere as much energy as a discrete GPU.

Saw the 80GB + Killzone pack selling for €249 yesterday.....

As I already have 2, and I'm only getting another for mostly blu-ray, I was tempted to cancel my slim and buy it there and then.. However I know i'll only regret it, so I'll hold on till tuesday 1st....

long time no see on the forums (work and partying during the summer holidays)

but yesterday i got my ps3 slim at the local gameshop (got there after work at 5pm and they had about 10 left from 60) but luckily for me the limited 'get a ps3 slim and get a game for free' rebate wasn't limited to 20 units as told the day before
so i walked out with the slim console and infamous for 299 € which i found mighty fine for launch ... the other option was killzone 2 which as a game simply wasn't interesting for me as launch game
little big planet (20 euro amazon) should be in the mail already and arrive tomorrow

if any of the veteran console forum members want to add me on PSN thingy drop me message

and i'm helpfull for all recommendations for games which are out for a little and are cheap now and of course wether there are good demos available (especially multiplayer)
and why the online store has no category for "show all demos, newest first" is beyond me

Fantastic single player games that should be cheap now:

- Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
- Bioshock
- Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction
- Far Cry 2 (has multiplayer too, but I never got into that)
- Dead Space

There are demos for most of those on PSN (might need to check the US store though - just make a second account with a bogus American address).

Good multiplayer games:

- The Call of Duties are popular (especially Modern Warfare)
- Warhawk

Man, if they hadn't taken out backwards compatibility, I would likely trade in my launch model for a slim. I love the smaller size, less heat (less noise) and lower power consumption.

But as it is, I just rebought Shadow of the Colossus to play it upscaled, so I need to hold on to the phat one!

If, however, they were to follow the "God of War" route and release a "Team Ico Collection" for PS3, I would probably sell it and get a slim!

I probably wouldn't get a PS3 slim-If I wanted something like that, then I'd probably get a new iPod Touch.

I might get a PSP though-A question: If you want to go "the legal way" and you buy disks can you have them transferred onto a memory stick or something so that you can take all your games along for a travel or something and not just be limited to one game (One disk slot)?

Understandable, as those two gadgets are practically identical in every way, especially now that they've decreased the PS3's power consumption. The Ipod Touch still has much better battery life - the PS3 stops working almost immediately after I disconnect the power cable. Also, the new Ipod Touch is rumored to have a built-in camera - with the PS3 it's an extra accessory you would have to buy!
