What is this "Bravia Syncing" I keep reading about? I have a Bravia tv....what would this do for me?

I guess it is a matter of opinion. I preordered a slim based solely on the fact that it has Bravia syncing. It allows me to control all my Sony components (TV and reciever and BD) easily with one remote and minimal button pushing. I sold my release-day PS3 last year when I got the TV and Reciever since its remote was exclusively Bluetooth.

It's a big deal for me, but for some it would be next to useless.

So it's looking like it may hit retail as early as mid/end of next week both in europe & the states.....

Oh well... another hit on the CC :D

Limited or fee-based online play?
Limited control options?
Limited resolution and graphic settings?

Compared to the PC version, of course.

But does everyone have money to buy a high-end gaming PC? I do, but most don't. :p

And besides, Modern Warfare 2 is $60 on the PC as well. It'll all come down to preference. I'll probably pick it up on the PS3 first, and then the PC later when it's much cheaper. ;)

A couple of months ago I built a PC for double the price of a PS3 (even after the price cut) and runs Crysis Warhead at maximum settings and native resolution ;). It's a total myth that gaming PC's have to cost over £1000, that kind of system is for enthusiasts only.
And like all PC games it will be down to £30 here a week after launch.

Limited or fee-based online play? or you could look at it as online play with like minded people which often has much better support for hooking up with friends (invite a friend etc...) and clan's.

Limited control options? because you wont have to suffer the injustice of trying to play a console styled game like DMC4 on PC with a keyboard & mouse. ;) Or find out that even though the game you have bought is listed as 'game for windows', it still doesn't support a 360 controller. And your limited to keyboard & mouse. Limited control options apply to PC too.

Limited resolution and graphic settings? So you can't turn them up 'higher' but at least they are for the most part optimized to your machine specifications from the outset and you wont have to spend an age changing settings trying to get a playable frame rate, or find out that you have just spent $50 on a game like Crysis and your GPU despite spending $300 bucks on - still isn't up to the job of playing the game as it looked in those fancy previews and magazine reviews. It may not look the best, but your 360 / PS3 will at least look as advertised, and you wont suffer the bitter disappointment of finding you can't get the game running anything like it looks on the back of the box, without spending more money... or if decent GPU update necessitates new computer, a hell of a lot of money......

Any $ saving is destroyed by Limited Trade In Options / Pre-owned In most major game stores in Europe you can not trade in PC games at all, as the EULA licensing and often Serial Key / DRM protection limits. So whilst you may save $20 per game on PC over it's console brethren, you lose that advantage because you can't trade it in once your finished unlike console owners. Console games at least offer consumers suitable trade in opportunities with gamestores running special trade in deals, and the chance to buy the game at often highly reduced price - albeit pre-owned.

I find that hard to believe. So did you buy everything from scratch (and I mean everything. :p)? And what specs? I know that some people consider just upgrading an older PC with newer parts is considered building a PC, but that's upgrading in my book. ;)

What resolution are you running Crysis Warhead at? I've got a buddy who's running with a Core 2 Duo 3.33Ghz (overclocked to 4Ghz) with a Geforce GTX 260 running at full HD resolution with settings cranked up all high. Yes, it looks amazing, but definitely doesn't running at a solid framerate. It runs anywhere from 20-60fps depending on how much crap is going on. And how much did it cost him? About $500. Just for the processor + gpu ($280 + $200). So, again, how much did you really spend on your PC?

Keep in mind I bought a Geforce 8800 GTX a few years ago when it was $650! This is when it was TOP OF THE LINE. I still have that machine, with a Core 2 Quad 2.66Ghz, and it's still amazing even to this day. I'm able to run Crysis (I haven't bought Warhead yet...), and I'm able to crank up the settings all the way high. Framerate is around 20-60fps, again depending on how much crap is going on...And I spent around $1000 just for the processor and gpu alone. :p

Have a read. Same dude built a $350 PC that could run Crysis on High 720p level res (can't remember the exact resolution). PC's are dirt ass cheap nowadays. They just take some added work to buy, put together and get everything run properly (esp. if you wanna overclock etc), but thats part of the fun!

So to recap this thread:

PS3 Slim is coming >>PS3 slim is here >>Whos buying it >>PS3 Slim is ugly >>No BC no deal >>Xbox360 breaks down too much>>PC is way cheaper for gaming.

See where we went wrong?

Might as well add my on derail.....Activision is ripping gamers off with their inflation and people will fall for it and other publishers will fall in line...we as consumers are gullible.

Bless

I already know that you can build a PC for $350 (with absolute trash components ;)). I should have stated that if you want to have it running at 1080p at 60fps (or at least near it, especially Crysis Warhead), you'd have to spend at least $750. Yes, if you get budget items, and overclock, you wouldn't have any problems running at 720p. But really, who runs PC games at 1280 x 720 these days? After seeing a PC game running at 1080p, there's no going back. That's what you have the PS3 and 360 for, to fill in the 720p needs. Yeah it doesn't run at 120fps like a PC does, but for most people, it works just fine. PCs are meant to be top of the line. :p

and some people like to sit on their sofa to play games in a social setting vs hunched over their computer lol

consoles ftw!

Thank god they de-uglified it. That was the most important thing. (The smaller size and less power consumption are just extras.)

I agree. That's why I'm getting it. I like the "rebranding". Can't wait to see the new box designs on the shelves. Looks sexy.

It also gets to bitstream Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio! Not that it was ever a problem for me...But I would have liked my receiver to give me info on what was being processed!

Haha, well I have my PC hooked up to my HDTV via 1080p. So I can sit on the couch and play PC games. :p

But I understand most people don't have the money to buy extras (bluetooth mouse + keyboard, etc).

I find that hard to believe.

You can find it however you want, but you can build a PC that runs Crysis (I say this since its still the pinnacle of graphics) for very cheap. I'm not sure on the specs; Radeon ATI HD-something, that was £75. 2.8ghz dual core AMD Black (both CPU and GPU overclocked to the hills), 4gb DDR2 ram, 1.5tb drive (this really bumped the cost up and isn't even necessary). And then a case, wifi card etc. All in all we paid £500 which was less than 2 old PS3's and the same as 2 new ones. Without a card reader, wifi card, -1tb drive and cheaper case it would have been around £350. Or 500 with a needlessly better video card ;). All from aria.co.uk. something*720 in Crysis, monitors max of 1680*1050 in Warhead.

What isn't there to get! Surely Sikkinixx's link would have killed that argument in a second ;).
And damn you bringing me out of early internet retirement.

lol wut i think my fat ps3 is much better looking then the new one, as well i think the new one is a slim version of the junky 40gb version, with just a bigger harddrive, personally i think my 1st 80gb (320gb) model is better than the slim considering it has 2 extra usb ports sdcard reader thinger (which i use) plays ps2 games, can install extra os, and generally better IMO

Haha, I think my fat PS3 is also more stylish. ;)

But then again, I haven't seen the PS3 slim in person. I used to think the PS3 was ugly, until I saw it in person. It's usually how it works anyway. :p Besides, it still looks better than the fugly 360, and the Wii...Well, it's a Wii.

Screw looks though! I buy my consoles to play the games, not to stare at them.

I like the way the original looks, however I like the matte finish of the slim. I'm not sure if things grow on me much, I have always hated the design and thought the Toyota Prius was a hidious looking car, and I still do. You couldn't pay me to drive that car.

well of course its how it works and generally i think the top of the line fat ps3s are better than the crumy slim one which is just a crappy ps3 40gb, the fat one has more to offer not spec wise but option wise. and they say its easier to upgrade the hdd without voiding said cnet on the slim ps3, there wrong its just as easy on the ps3 fat and doesn't void the warranty, so i don't know what they were talking about there.

Man, those prices are high! :)

I suppose where you live could be why they're so much higher, but to add to the mix, here's the price of my PC, which is about a year old. It runs Crysis max without dipping to a point I'm bothered(so nothing choppy.) at 1600 x 900. I need to buy the newer one -- which runs better from what I read, I've just been busy with other games.

Intel Core 2 Q9450 4 x 2.66 ($279 when I bought it, now I can get a 9550 for $169)
PNY GTX 275 ($199 Bought it last month. Didn't really need to jump from a 9600gt, but the price was really good.)
Intel DP35D ($99 when I bought it. Most stable board I've owned and also the cheapest!)
Corsair HX 620 PSU ( $139 )
Corsair 4 gig DDR 2 mem. ($110 when I bought it, I can get it for about $70 right now)
Antec Case ($80 on sale when I bought it, actually costs more right now.)

I didn't need a HD, but I looked at current prices. A 500 Gig Segate is $60 at Microcenter. I also don't need an OS since I have XP64 Pro, but I noticed that an OEM copy of XP Pro or XP64 Pro is $64 on Pricewatch, but not sure what its deal is. Prior to Vista bombing, I recall seeing XP64 Pro for less than $30 online.

Anyways, a PC similar to mine, just with a faster CPU, will cost about $950 to build including tax here in California.

Well, you bought your stuff when the economy started getting sour, hence why it's cheaper. :p

I bought ALL my stuff from Newegg BTW, which at the time, they had stuff much cheaper than everywhere else. And still to this day, they continue to have some of the best prices for computer components.

Yes, a Geforce 8800 GTX was $650 when it first came out, and I was one of the few who jumped the gun and bought it. And man was it smoking fast when it first came out! I was able to run EVERY game at max settings. This was before the Core 2 came out, etc. I had an Opteron 285 OCed to 3Ghz, etc, before upgrading to a Core 2 Quad. Ever since the economy went sour, everything's been MUCH cheaper. Pretty much half price for everything.

I think in total, just for the Core 2 Quad upgrade, I spent about $1500 (includes new case, memory, motherboard, processor, old 8800 GTX, etc). I haven't had any incentive to upgrade to a newer graphics card yet, as my 8800 GTX has lasted for almost 3 years now. ;)

Sorry to interrupt the PC talk, but has anyone heard of the actual release date? I heard it was the 25th, and preordering on Amazon has a 1 to 2 month delay, so shopping at the local Best Buy or Target is my only chance.

Thanks!

I heard that they're going to start selling the 26th (which is tomorrow). Better check with your local stores! Just ask and they'll let you know. But I suspect that everyone's been asking...Since every store I've been to is sold out of the 80GB, and only has a couple of 160GBs left. So the slim might probably be sold out by the time you get there. :p

No one knows for certain really. Amazon claim to be shipping by 26th. But will they? Some GameStops claim it could be in by the end of the week.

Basically anywhere between now and 10 days time they should be appearing at retail stores (hopefully).

My GameStop computer system only has a placeholder date of Jan 2009? I mean how is that? Basically they don't know themselves.

Sony may delay certain territories and areas simply because they know there are a surplus of existing ps3 hardware sat on store shelves. It would make more sense for Sony to roll out ps3's on a priority basis instead of leaving some stores with heaps of unsold Fat Ps3's.

That being said, I have fully paid in advance for a slim at my local GameStop and hope it's sooner rather than later :)
