Even if it's an unconfirmed rumor I hope people are aware of ones like "Apple seeds new Mac OS X build, threatens seed program".

If nothing else, it's a reminder that it's unfair and inconsiderate (to put it politely) asking people to divulge non-disclosure information.

Being in the medical profession I know how important it is to not disclose confidentiality. It is after all the intellectual property of Apple. They have the right to ask that leaks not occur. We he are just having fun with rumors.

"ULTIMATE"? no way, a 3d interface would be nothing mroe than a gimmick right now... and it would be too vast a change for the end user.

Like 20 years ago when Apple introduced the mac and the first commercially sucessful GUI? That was a huge shift in user experience and a huge change to how computers were used.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_graphical_user_interface#Apple_Lisa_and_Macintosh

Take a look at Sun's Looking Glass project. It's a bit rough around the edges, but would make for a very cool usable interface if Apple's design team got a hold of it. It also fits well with Apple's take on windows (the idea that a window represents a document rather than a program) rather than the Windows take (where a window can be either).

http://wwws.sun.com/software/looking_glass/

If you look at some of the screenshots you might even get a hint that expose was laying the groundwork for something. I can see some 3d enhancements for expose being a massive feature, and a massive feather in Apple and Jobs' cap if they pull it off, first again.

A 3d desktop is made more possible by the fact that most of the eye candy in modern OS' is now handled already by the graphics cards, most of which have 3d acceleration. No refs for this, but wasn't Apple one of the first to do this in a consumer OS?

It could work, and it could be very good.

I don't know. Panther actually sped my G3 up quite a bit. Maybe Tiger will do the same (or at least be just as fast).

you can be sure tiger will support the G3 cpu because apple had G3 models just last year. I too hope for a speed bump like the one I got when upgrading to panther.

based on how apple has done cpu support for current os in the past I would say that the newest os will be running on G3's for at least another 2-3 years. my G4/500 cpu runs x fine for my taste and the faster G3's would run it just as well I would imagine. apple went up to a G3/900 right? think it was the last G3 ibook.

a question: any solid word on system requirements for tiger yet? I assume most of the same systems will work. if they drop support for anything it would probably be for the fist couple revisions of the imac.

We discussed Looking Glass in these forums once before. It would be great to lock the designers behind Exposé and Looking Glass in the same room for a while and see what they come up with. And I think we should throw the QuickTime VR team in there with them too.

Here is the "Looking Glass" that I'm familar with Doctor Q. I was stationed at Offutt AFB from 1974 - 1984.

No. It's not even WWDC yet. Please don't ask.

umm, I can ask any damn thing I want. if you don't like it then don't read what I type.

you have real balls telling someone what they should or shouldn't ask.

And this is a Looking Glass too, but let's try to stay on topic.

My favorite feature of Panther was Exposé and I'd love to learn that Apple has taken it to the next level in Tiger.

I'm sorry Doctor Q, but I just couldn't resist. Don't really understand the concept of "Looking Glass."

I don't know if it's because Expose' isn't on the desktop or not, but I haven't had an ooccasion to use the program. So far I can manage my FileMaker Pro & Safari without any problem. ;)

The dock and Exposé and Sun's Looking Glass and Windowshade (originally freeware, then part of pre-X Mac OS, and now shareware again) and command-tab and, to some extent, fast user switching are all solutions to the same general problem. While our brains and eyes may be paying attention to only a few windows at a time, we are often in the midst of more overall tasks than our screens can display windows for.

For example, at once point last Saturday, I found myself with 18 windows open, one of them being Safari with half a dozen tabs in use. No, I don't need 25 windows all completely visible at once, but I do need convenient ways to get from the one window I'm using this very second to the one I want to view or use next. Because we each think and work differently (and differently from time to time), the more options I have for doing this, the better.

The general principal is to keep the windows from taking up screen space or obscuring other windows until I'm ready for them. Each of the facilities I mention above is one way to do just that. Sun's Looking Glass does Windowshade one better, letting windows turn sideways in 3D instead of just rolling up.

Some desktop environments under Linux and other OSes let you define multiple desktops and switch among them. I mentioned Quicktime VR above because I can imagine having a panorama or VR background, with windows off the screen that I can pan/zoom/fly to, providing yet another way to cope with a plethora of windows.

Well, you asked something that someone would, at this time, be violating some NDA to answer. My asking you not to ask was in the context of my recent post about just that issue, which maybe you hadn't read or simply didn't feel was worth consideration. Or maybe you didn't realize there hasn't been any information officially released about Tiger yet. Sorry, I didn't intend to provoke you.

On an official Apple forum it may be inappropriate to ask if anyone has any rumor information that may violate an NDA, but remember, this is Mac Rumors! ;)

Tiger still doen't sound right. 10.4 Bengal or 10.4 Tigris?

um... but one problem... isn't Tigris a Mesopotamian river, not an animal? ^_~

hehe

Anyway... At least people aren't still saying that they should keep Tiger for hte name of the last OS X - 10.9 -_- people - it's not a decimal... 10.10 is still bigger than 10.9 and is not the same thing as 10.1 *COUGH* anyway.. I'm done w/ my rant. *gets off soapbox*
Hmmm.. my wishlist for features? an up button in finder (I'm almost tempted to look for source code and put it there myself... it would go SOOOO well betw. the back and forward buttons) A version of Safari that doesn't show up as an outdated version of NS on many websites or at least follows M$'s screwed up DOM for IE..
The ability to program what my power buttons do would be nice (i.e. when I hit the power button on my cinematic display, make it turn off only the monitor instead of putting my computer to sleep). More optimizations for my G5 are a must ^_^
Mail might be upgraded with spam protection that is a bit smarter and c.an fi.nd th.e n.ew s.p4.m te.chn.i.qu.es.
Maybe j2sdk 1.5 will be released w/ OS X 10.4?
I'm sure the overall code will be optimized even more as well..
maybe I will finally get iChat AV to show all screennames of the same person who is online (or at least let me pick which one to show) since right now I have one person w/ 2 sn's... one they are usually on and one they are rarely on... try as I may, I can't get iChat to show the second one on my buddy list... yet it says her name when she im's me, so it DOES know it's her..
Improved networking is a must (altho I know it's M$'s fault - in fact.. they were found guilty in court by the EU - but it still makes it hard on mac users who are on a school network which is filled by mostly PC n00bs). I don't think it's fair that M$ can obfuscate their networking and bring it away from protocol so that they can either sell u a PC w/ windows on it so that you are compatable with other computers on the network (stay the top because you are the top) or force you to buy virtual pc 7 when it comes out so that you're "compatable with windows only networks".
Oh, and one last thing... I want my context menu (right mouse click) to have an "Open terminal here" option!! LONG LIVE LINUX! hehe :D
I do like the ideas of possibly having more than one dock.. one thing that I was wondering was if u could have a "group" icon... something where u click on it and a menu comes out (kinda like a dock extension) w/ program icons... it shouldn't be that bad to makie and it would really help w/ my dock (I'm trying to keep it w/i appropriate length at the bottom of my 23" cinematic... -_- )
other than that, apple has surprised us again and again with awesome innovation that blows our minds away. I'm sure they have something we wouldn't have thought up before and we won't be able to see how we ever lived without (see exposé)
ahhh.. thus is the end of my debut post ^_^
