Hope this may resolve some of the random shutdowns I'm getting on my Original iPhone.

I'm sure it is...

If anything, iPhone OS has gotten slower and slower as new updates have been released. iPhone OS 1.0 on the original iPhone was by far the fastest experience. Compared to running 3.0 on a 3G it's just insane. The OS was getting so slow that they really had to boost the processing power with the 3GS to compensate for the software slowdown.

Only a fool would honestly say that each release is "snappier".

You are dreaming.

Mine works fine on iPhone 2G with 3.1.2. I have double-tap set to open the camera, but default to the iPod when music is playing. Works just as it should. I say give your settings a toggle. See if something doesn't clear it up.

My post was a bit brief (I had to get to work) so I'll explain the issue in a bit more detail now.

With OS 2, I could double-tap Home while music was playing to make the controls pop up. This still works in 3.1.2. However, in 2, after pausing the music I could double-tap again to re-open the popup and resume playback. In 3.1.2 that doesn't work and it just takes me to the app selected under Settings > General > Home.

In short, I'd like to be able to unpause music without quitting the running app, like I could in OS 2.

Edit: I'm using a first-gen Touch. According to TheSpaz's post below, there's historically been a different behaviour depending on whether you have an iPhone or Touch.

Update

I wonder whether this update introduces a hardware keyboard and multitasking? Might make me switch back from my Blackberry...!

This has worked on my 3G all along...

That's not what he means. iPod touch cannot double tap to bring up the controls UNLESS music is playing. Before, iPod users could double tap ANYTIME to bring up controls. Then Apple changed it so that it was the same as the iPhone.

This update is boring. What a long time to wait for nothing. Oh well, doesn't affect me because I'm not going past 2.2.1.

Im not sure if its even worth to do the update on my 3G. I will skip it unless i have some other reason to restore my phone.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 1.6; en-us; Archos5 Build/Donut) AppleWebKit/528.5+ (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.2 Mobile Safari/525.20.1)

The update bricked my Nexus One. :(

:D (I jest....)

Updated my phone. It seems a little faster. It probably needed to be rebooted any way which may explain the speed increase. Developing and testing on the iPhone really drives the OS nuts. In the process of updating the iPhone SDK as well. I have not installed the beta version of the SDK. The iPhone SDK 3.1.3 seems smaller than the usual updates.

If Live Updating is checked on a Smart Playlist in iTunes, the playlist on the iPhone bears no resemblance whatsoever to the one in iTunes.

I have a 'chart' playlist on my Mac (sorted by most played) which, on my iPhone, just has a bunch of completely random songs.

It's been like it for over a year I think.

Mrkgoo - am I right with my year-long estimate?

i have almost the same thing

i have a smart playlist that is a random 25 songs with a play count of 0. on the iphone it's a totally different playlist

That's a weird one. I was also having an issue with my smart playlists where I had them sorted by name in iTunes but they would appear in some random order on my iphone, Touch, etc. I had to add another rule to each smart playlist (Playlist Is Music) and that took care of it. Might be worth trying on one of your smart playlists to see if it helps.

Anybody else still have that ANNOYING bug that gives you a normal keyboard when entering a phone number to text to instead of the numerical keypad??? Cause I DO!!!

Hopefully this fixes it!

Anyone have a direct link? My internet connection is slow and I hate having to leave my iPhone connected as it downloads through iTunes.

Oh, fabulous idea - I'll try it because not having live updating on "recently played" is very annoying!

But I still want to make the point that it's been A YEAR of it not working properly.

Playlists are still all messed up when synchronised with iPhone 3GS

Seriously, I'm all about Apple cause things tend/used to work JUST FINE, but trying to remain impartial if we are going to call another company lazy for being buggy, how about next time we cover our own ass so we can display our arrogance to the four winds without the risk of burning out by making our own EXTREMELY LATE (on the simplest thing) FIX actually work.

I don't know about you but if you have your iTunes smart playlists checked with "live updating" they just don't sync in the same order in your iPhone or iPod touch, and this is not new for a long shot.

I am a patient man but if you claim that this "upgrade" (more like a patch) is supposed to fix it, well I expect the problem to be gone, SURPRISE, is not.

"LESS IS MORE", it's really all about the simple things isn't it??? remember what made u number one Apple and FOCUS, JUST FREAKIN FOCUS.

EXPANSION DOES NOT MEAN IMPROVEMENT IF YOU SPREAD YOURSELF THIN.

And before u quote ur "hate responses" I am pro Apple, and constructive feedback only leads to real improvements.

SO FYI, I will NOT stop using iTunes, and I will NOT stop using my Mac or iPhone 3GS, but it will definitely make my life a lot easier if something as simple as the playlists would work as it was before and as expected to.

That's all, if u feel the need to bitch about my post go troll or vent elsewhere. If u have a solution or an actual point I will appreciate it and I am open for suggestions.

Thanks in advance for any constructive reply that might help solving this problem.

and it bricked my iphone. good thing i manually backed up all the pictures of my son i had on there

Yeah - that's crazy that it's been like that for a year. My issue only popped up recently but I'm not sure what triggered it. Luckily that simple fix took care of my issue but you would think that Apple could come up with a fix on their own.

Tried updating, and after a full restart still not working.

Oh well....

Your issue sounds just like mine. You should try what I suggested a few posts up.

Enables tethering for factory unlocked phones!

Great news for users of factory unlocked iPhones. This update reenables tethering. I am actually writing this post from my MBP which is connected to a factory unlocked iPhone 3G (carrier is o2-Germany) using USB-Tethering! Thought some of you might find this interesting! I love it! :)

Figures. I've had an iPhone since day 1 and just decided to jailbreak two days ago.

Well, that was very interesting... I updated my English iPod, opened the Music app, and it's in Japanese. Head-scratching ensues, as the rest of the OS is still in English. I'm sure that I'll just need to toggle the language, but it's still bizarre.

The double-tap issue that I mentioned above is still not fixed.
