They don't mention it, but I'm hoping this along with the itunes update will finally fix my Smart Playlists with Live Updating order issues.

If Live Updating is checked on a Smart Playlist in iTunes, the playlist on the iPhone bears no resemblance whatsoever to the one in iTunes.

I have a 'chart' playlist on my Mac (sorted by most played) which, on my iPhone, just has a bunch of completely random songs.

It's been like it for over a year I think.

Mrkgoo - am I right with my year-long estimate?

The update fixed this issue for me! My smart playlists are finally in alphabetical order by song name, as they are defined in iTunes.

Anyone else's iPod Touch get renamed back to: iPod touch?

First time that's ever happened to me.

I'm still on 3.0.1 because I don't want to lose native tethering. I have never jailbroken my phone and don't intend to.

I was wondering, is jailbreaking the only way to get tethering on 3.1.2?

Besides paying for it?

If your carrier doesn't support it, yes. Reds0w was just updated to activate it while jailbreaking. So a pretty convenient all in one.

Great news for users of factory unlocked iPhones. This update reenables tethering. I am actually writing this post from my MBP which is connected to a factory unlocked iPhone 3G (carrier is o2-Germany) using USB-Tethering! Thought some of you might find this interesting! I love it! :)

I have a factory unlocked iPhone and I had tethering since 3.0. That has to do with your carrier, not just the OS.

I'm starting to wonder if 3.1.2 will be the last version of the iPhone OS that can be jailbroken, even with the enormous talents of the Dev Team and Hotz.

That is VERY interesting. I'll need to post about this on an NZ forum and get some non-Vodafone users to try it :)

OK, so *still* no fix for that extremely annoying bug that have many peoples iPod Touch playing random music or podcasts when the device "sleeps" or on wake-up when the Apple Headphones happens to be connected... Thanks Apple. Great work. Maybe you should check your forums to see what people are really ****** off about.

Tethering won't work with a factory-unlocked phone under 3.1.0-3.1.2 if you're not using an "Apple-approved" carrier. It sounds like 3.1.3 might resolve this issue.

Anybody else still have that ANNOYING bug that gives you a normal keyboard when entering a phone number to text to instead of the numerical keypad??? Cause I DO!!!

Uhhh...

Is this in jest?

When you are composing an SMS/MMS and you are in the To: line, it will use the alphanumeric/QWERTY keyboard, not the number/phonepad keyboard. This is normal, and it's supposed to be this way. It's so that you can type in the NAME of a contact in your contacts database to look them up instantly, instead of needing to know their phone number off the top of your head or force you to scroll through all of your contacts.

Not a bug.

I also wonder if this'll speed up the App and iTunes store on the iPhone. I honestly never use them (unless I see someone with a REALLY good app) cos I get bored of seeing a grey screen with "Loading..." and give up.

Not really. It became an issue with iTunes 9, which was released in October, I think. Feels longer though if you face the issue. There are some workable solutions.

Temp solution for Smart Playlists not syncing in Iphone/iPod Touch

Your issue sounds just like mine. You should try what I suggested a few posts up.

thanks a lot psywzrd, it worked a treat.

But really why do we have to add this for syncing to work?? It has been waaaaay too long and I remember using my smart playlists without a problem before.

In any case, adding: "playlist is music" like you suggested worked.

Rock on

What was the problem with the battery levels? Were they showing too full or too empty? Or, will this add hours to my phone? :)

Hopefully this fixes it!

That may have started with MMS to allow you to send a message to an email address. If you turn off MMS and reboot it will come back.

yes!!! I so hope this is true!!! will try asap.

(Funlocked Italy 3GS, o2 Germany (dataflat for 5 € :D (reduced speed after 200MB (but in reality not happening)))) ;)

That's a weird one. I was also having an issue with my smart playlists where I had them sorted by name in iTunes but they would appear in some random order on my iphone, Touch, etc. I had to add another rule to each smart playlist (Playlist Is Music) and that took care of it. Might be worth trying on one of your smart playlists to see if it helps.

THIS FIXED IT! Thank you psywzrd. Was getting really annoying having to toggle 'live update' every time I wanted to update my phone.

edit: I wonder if any ruleless playlist will end up garbled if live updating is enabled. Maybe I could add any rule and not specifically 'playlist is music' and it would work. Not going to try since it's working now, though!

Oh, fabulous idea - I'll try it because not having live updating on "recently played" is very annoying!

But I still want to make the point that it's been A YEAR of it not working properly.

Sorry but the list "recently played" on your iTunes resembles the machine where your iTunes is installed on. Every device has its own list of recently played songs, so your iPhone has one and for example your girlfriends iPod also. Even if you synch all those devices with only one iTunes then they keep their own recently played lists. So actually, it is a bug that iTunes offers synching for that list as that list does really exist but is very dynamic and device dependent. (Actually its like /proc on a Mac, there is nothing there like a file but you can read from it :) because those are actually pipes undercover )

So sorry to say that, but you might want to look into creating another smart play list best matching your preferences.

It's possible that Apple just decided to enable Internet Tethering support by default for non-official carriers that Apple doesn't distribute carrier bundles for. But that doesn't mean, for those just tuning in, that you'll be able to tether using ANY provider on an officially-unlocked phone...the OS comes with the complete list of carrier bundles, and I'm sure that if you were to, say, put an AT&T SIM card in an officially-unlocked iPhone and use it on AT&T in the States, the phone software would consult the AT&T carrier bundle, see that it does not allow for tethering, and block its use, just as if you had an AT&T-SIM-locked iPhone purchased from AT&T.

The installation errored out part of the way through and now it won't let me restore either. Any suggestions?
