Apple announced this morning that they had sold over 300,000 iPads on the first day. The sales included deliveries of pre-ordered iPads as well as direct sales at apple Retail Stores. Apple also announced that over one million apps from Apple's App Store and 250,000 ebooks from the iBookstore were downloaded.
"It feels great to have the iPad launched into the world -- it's going to be a game changer," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "iPad users, on average, downloaded more than three apps and close to one book within hours of unpacking their new iPad."
The announcement of official numbers reveal that analyst predictions reported on Saturday were off by a factor of two.

Now this sounds more real than what that analyst said :)
Can someone say whether this is a lot, not much, or normal?

Sounds about right!

The product will start to lift in sales because of word of mouth.

I wouldn't say that its magical device but it is unique and honestly very user friendly.

One of the many...

I DLd about half a dozen apps (yay Netflix) and DLd Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter ebook. A pretty good read so far... I'm really enjoying my iPad. Even wrote this post with it.:D

700,000 nope

Can't double on second day without home delivery. Gut said in the 400K range. Let's see Easter. Had to be much slower. It's a family day.

Congrats to Steve and everyone at Apple. Great job, great execution.
Welcome to the next age of computing today.

Via the iPad.

This just shows you how much you can put your trust in these idiots. I seriously think they just randomly guess these figures. They never have any solid evidence to come up with these off the wall figures. Still, not bad first day sales. According to my figures, Apple should sell 1.3 million ipads by November 3rd.

Munster's *original" prediction was between 200,000-300,000, but after visiting an Apple Store and seeing all the buzz and activity he got stars in his eyes and completely lost it, causing him to bump up his estimate. He got a bit too giddy, it would seem.

im not sure if i am correct, but i think most people will hold of until its worth it.

1. people want multitasking, for skype, msn, etc (i would buy 4 as my family and i love the what they could bring.

2. Camera - Skype'ing your family from abroad while seeing them would be awesome.

3. Tethering. This is my most important feature and i refuse to buy ANY until this is sorted out,, how dare they not allow me to tether the ipad to my iphone. I would happily pay more for the ability, but i refuse with out exception to pay for another data subscription. (not only that, i only have to upgrade my iphone when 4g comes out rather then buy a new ipad)

Wow still pretty impressive for the opening weekend! With the 3G launching I think they could hit the million mark pretty quick!

Yeah, it's really more of a "must want" instead of a "must have" at this point, and only people who get excited about apple technology are really going to pick it up at this point. It's a very cool thing, for sure, but not something that really fulfills a computing need for many people. It's telling that the cheapest version sold the best -- people just wanted to have an iPad.

my thoughts:

1) from that press release looks like 3G ipads are not included in that figure. It says that 300,000 ipads delivered. I didnt think the 3G ones were shipped yet...could be wrong if someone has a preorder for 3G, does it say it has been shipped?
2) this is a product that is a new category (unlike iphone). I would equate this more with ipod and sales took 3-4 years to really take off so i think that is important to keep in mind too.
3) even for an established market like iphone, it took 2 years for the 3GS to really hit mainstream.

When I did my arbitrary sales analysis on Saturday, I figured around 300,000-400,000 were probably sold from pre-orders through to Saturday.

And, is 300,000 a failure? Is this a device no one wants? I'm sure they will sell well over 1,000,000 by year's end and I'll be one of those purchases.

It looks fantastic. This is a game changer indeed. Wonder if Ballmer is crapping himself yet? The MS boys must be redoing their entire tablet now.

Don't forget Flash!

:)

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

I've got a real strong feeling that one will end up in my home during the uk release. I'm looking forward to getting to try one out first hand.

Can't wait! I'm sure the wife will love it too. :D

At this point the iPad is nothing more than a toy. When it actually does become a viable laptop replacement, then maybe it will win over those of us that don't just robotically buy everything that Steve poops out.
