It looks fantastic. This is a game changer indeed. Wonder if Ballmer is crapping himself yet? The MS boys must be redoing their entire tablet now.

Tablets have been around for much longer, especially ones that arent limited to an iPhone OS (or rather, having a fully functioning OS).

Apple releases a limited tablet with Apple tax, and all of a sudden its a game changer? I don't see why Balmer should be crapping himself, last time I checked, MS doesnt make tablets that they'd need to redo.

Don't forget Flash!

:)

I can't forget Flash. Every time my daughter uses my wife's iPad and attempts to go to one of her favorite kid gaming sites and is greeted with NOTHING I'm reminded of what a joke Apple is for not supporting it. If MS did something as stupid as this we'd be ripping them too.

At this point the iPad is nothing more than a toy. When it actually does become a viable laptop replacement, then maybe it will win over those of us that don't just robotically buy everything that Steve poops out.

Had it been 600,000+ sold we'd see a different "opinion" from you.

This clearly shows these analysts just make figures up.

I agree. In my experience of reading rumors and analyst predictions for the last few years. The analyst predictions are completely wrong so often that I think its pure chance that they might be right once in a while.
Actually in even saying that......are they ever right?

The announcement of official numbers reveal that analyst predictions reported on Saturday were off by a factor of two.

The only analyst that predicted 600-700 thousand sales was Gene Munster of Piper Jafray. So it's a bit misleading to say "analyst predictions" in general. Also, I'm betting that Munster included 3G orders in his math — given that Apple doesn't charge your credit card until they ship, they will not have included 3G "sales" into the 300,000 number.

"It feels great to have the iPad launched into the world -- it's going to be a game changer," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "iPad users, on average, downloaded more than three apps and close to one book within hours of unpacking their new iPad."

American ignorance.... U.S. only launch is a "launch into the world"... ?

im not sure if i am correct, but i think most people will hold of until its worth it.

1. people want multitasking, for skype, msn, etc (i would buy 4 as my family and i love the what they could bring.

2. Camera - Skype'ing your family from abroad while seeing them would be awesome.

3. Tethering. This is my most important feature and i refuse to buy ANY until this is sorted out,, how dare they not allow me to tether the ipad to my iphone. I would happily pay more for the ability, but i refuse with out exception to pay for another data subscription. (not only that, i only have to upgrade my iphone when 4g comes out rather then buy a new ipad)

Very happy with the iPad and i do agree with number 3. It's extremely frustrating that they don't allow this. It's not like i'd be using the phone and ipad at the same time, so what's the friggen difference?
Who exactly is prevent this? AT&T or Apple? or both?

Collector's edition still available

The :apple: TV had an initial order size placed by Apple of 150K units. Like the inventory of TV's, look for this initial 800K to be around for some time. The first lot is a collector's item in 25 years!

Actually, Munster wasn't off in his original prediction.

Why MUST it be viable laptop replacement? Seriously, why can't it be what it is....a large touch screen internet device.....basically a large iPod Touch.

I love my iPod Touch....and I love the iPad for what it does. It's not replacing my Mac Pro or my MacBook anytime soon.....but then again I don't have delusions that it will :D

Toy or not.....I like it and it's usable for what I do with it.

People need to stop thinking it's going to solve all the worlds computing problems.

Wonder what Steve will poop out next...:apple::apple::apple::apple::apple:

Agreed.

As bad as steve jobs has made all of the sheep believe a netbook to be, its still a far better all around solution anywhere from half to 1/4 the price. Why would someone pay nearly $1,000 on an oversized iPhone, or a tablet that doesnt do it all.

The term 'jack of all trades, master of none' really applied to the iPad. For the price of the ipad when topping out at the maximum price, I can only see stupidity as a reason to overlook a simple laptop...or wait no, gotta make the fanboys happy: a simple macbook.

It took 74 days for the original iPhone to reach 1 million sold. The iPad is one-third of the way there in 1 day. And that's for the WiFi-only model. The 3G model is still 3-4 weeks away.

My prediction: Apple will hit 1 million iPads sold within the first 30 days.

That will be never, it's not supposed to be a laptop replacement.

And thanks for putting a nice and simple (and offensive) label on everyone who doesn't share your attitude.

Doesn't "jack of all trades, master of none" apply a lot more to a netbook?
In fact thats the opposite of what the ipad is!

I always thought the iPad would sell well in the first week, but I'm still unconvinced that the device will be much of a seller outside of the "core faithful". It'll be interesting to see if the numbers manage to keep up or fall away.

Some marketing spin going on I think. Not surprising.

Jobs is "excited" that within 2 hours people downloaded on average 3 apps and "up to one" (what does that mean LOL) iBook.

1) Of course people downloaded new iPad apps when they got home. No brainer. Nothing to be really excited about. Is there a stat to say what percentage were PAID apps? I'm sure Pages and other apps sold well - but I'd venture a guess and say that on average, the huge downloading that went on were free apps. Also does this include NEW app downloads and/or also updates.

2) Winnie the Pooh comes with iBooks. So - if there were 250,000 iBook downloads - does that include the free eBook? Or is the stat that they SOLD 250,000 eBooks?

As for units sold - clearly the iPad sold well. One does have to wonder if PERHAPS Apple allowed "leaks" or even planted them regarding possible shortages, etc to drive up demand and people racing to get them while delivering PLENTY of units come "game time"

Not saying anything nefarious - or bashing. But I wouldn't be surprised. Having a surplus might have actually increased impulse buys (like myself) on people who expected long lines and no inventory only to walk right in and say to themselves "oh - they DO have them in stock.. ok sign me up."

Did it beat first-day iPhone sales? Or were those tracked over a two-day period?

You're right:
iPhone sales on 29.&30.06.07: 270,000 units
iPad sales on 03.04.10: 300,000 units
iirc both in the US alone

Time to reach 1 mio units
iPhone: around 74 days
iPad: let's see if we hear an anouncement before June 15. :)

I knew those estimates of 600,000-700,000 were crazy inflated. All in all, I think the release date of April 3 was just a big mistake. Almost all Apple stores were closed yesterday due to Easter and all Best Buys were closed.

How are you going to release your next big thing on a shortened weekend and expect it to sell like crazy. I still don't understand what Apple was thinking with this release date. I would have ordered one for delivery, but was out of town for the holiday as I am sure a lot of other Americans were as well.

Oh well, I am kinda glad they didn't sell like crazy. Means I should be able to pick one up this week. :D

There's only one thing to say. OS4 ;)

If there is no multitasking in OS4 I'll eat my iPhone 2G :D

Doesn't "jack of all trades, master of none" apply a lot more to a netbook?

No. I get a full OS on a netbook and I can do whatever I want (for less cash, and with better specs).

When I saw the iPad wasnt shipping with an OS X variant, i completely disregarded it as a legit device. iPhone OS works on an iPhone, but not on an iPhone XL.
