Apple seems to have meeting demand when launching iProducts. Are they just unable to make enough, or do they just not order enough? After the original iPhone, you would think they would learn how to gauge demand better. But, nope. They had supply & demand issues with the 3G iPhone and now this.

It might be a good idea for Apple to invest some of the $40 billion dollars they are sitting on into getting more efficient manufacturing facilities in place. ;)

It's just a case of "When do we want to release this thing? April. OK Mr Chinese Factory owner, how many can you make us if you work your employees flat out 24/7 between now and then? 500,000? OK that will have to do!"

Another possibility is that Apples suppliers could not make enough parts. There were many rumors about a shortage of screens and other parts so that might have something to do with it.

Why cant the available stock be shared ?

Sucks to the non US customer base and is a real smack round the face to be honest to be told they are selling 'so well' in the US so 'You cant have one'.

It's an AMERICAN COMPANY, we get first dibs, deal with it. I'm still waiting for my 3g for crying out loud. Grow a spine!!!

I think this may turn out to be a good thing for UK consumers.

The more apple sell in the US, the more they will recoup on R&D costs. Maybe it will result in us getting it a little cheaper than we would have done.

U.S people are so lucky, always 1st to get the new things.

It is an American company, after all.

Hehe, I have to laugh at all the people saying "this sucks/makes no business sense/they should've invested in better manufacturing methods".

Apple, like a lot of manufacturers, are simply employing the legitimate tactic of ramping up demand by limiting supply. You don't make money making zillions of products and selling hundreds, whereas you do if you make hundreds and sell those hundreds quickly. They've always done it that way, and its worked pretty darn good thus far - people have always lusted after a new product from Apple.

This is a horrible development, IMO. Other countries need this! Non-American developers (me, for instance) are struggling to be able to get their hands on an iPad!

I have to agree with this point. If I was a developer not based in the US and I have been developing apps for the iPhone I'd really want an iPad to test my new apps with. There is nothing like testing the app on the actual device.

Starting to lose interest - I'm sick of the rest of the world being treated like we don't exist. I wouldn't mind so much if they'd just "nnnngh JUST SPIT OUT THE PRICE ALREADY!!" (and breathe...) but no - that'd be very un-Apple wouldn't it, so we spend another month in the dark. And that's the core of why I'm losing interest in Apple as a whole - the secrecy thing is completely pointless when it's something like international pricing and it's getting ridiculous.

The iPhone is a completely different product. I would say that it would have been extremely difficult to make an educated guess at the initial level of demand. Being able to produce half-a-million iPads in such a short time means that Apple probably has the best supply chain on the planet.

Didn't Steve state last week that an international delay due to high demand in the U.S. wouldn't happen?

It's great news that they are selling well, bad news for those abroad (I'm in the US) waiting.

In January I was underwhelmed. As time passed, I realized that the apps will make the technology wonderful. My wife gave me an iPad on Thursday and I'm amazed! Those of you patiently waiting, it will be worth the wait! I have not touched my MacBook Pro in 6 days (but still have a need for it).

Unless, of course, Apple intentionally ordered too few so Apple spin doctors could say that the iPad is a total success since they can't keep up with demand. Spin, gotta love it.

Maybe you're joking, but if you're not, think about it. Why would a company choose fewer sales in order to create more hype? The point of hype *is* to sell products. It would be like selling the cat in order to buy more cat food.

And delaying the international release is a strategy to avoid shortages, not create them. Assumably, they could go ahead with the international release, but then have too few on hand all over the world. They've chosen instead to keep the US stores in stock so as to *avoid* shortages.

damn, nice of steve to mention it in the q&A

oh well I have my masters to finish and get married so I think I will be bbusy enough until the end of May!

You most likely have it right. Apple doesn't want to come out and say they are fixing a Wifi issue and the product will be delayed. No, they want to spin it and say it's because of "demand".

Wrong. The wi-fi issue is software related, not hardware.

I'm a Brit but I have to say agree with you there, it's an American company and America is their biggest market.

It works both ways, if Cadbury started telling us Brits we couldn't have their British made chocolate bars yet because they were meeting overseas demand, no doubt we'd be up in arms.

Wait a minute... dammit, those Kraft-y Americans have bought Cadbury!

this is nothing surprise as Apple did not intended to make more initial quantity to fill up the expected outcome of the popularity of iPad

Bit of a long shot but do you suppose they have held off the UK pricing announcement until after the General Election (Thursday 6th May) in case we get a hung parliament that causes a run on sterling?

Ouch. That sucks, and it might get worse. I don't think that Apple will want to look stupid and put the date back again so I'm sure that "late May" will be when first shipments hit the UK but now, with the demand and the delays, I fear that sometime in June might be more realistic for me to expect to get my iPad.

The danger is that the launch allocation gets sold in an instant so if people aren't really quick hitting that pre-order button when it goes online then they could end up waiting for the second batch to reach UK shores.

I'm comforting myself with the fact that some of the apps that I want to see make it across to the iPad (e.g. Docs2Go or QuickOffice) aren't there yet and it also gives another month or so for Apple to get the UK iBook store up and running and start populating it with commercial titles.

Bah. I hope that's May for both WiFi and 3G models - if I have to wait until June for a 3G equipped model I'll be annoyed.

this is just bad for business, people abroad are paying steep prices because of this black market stage… with all that cash apple has they should have done a worldwide release, that would have been awesome!

If I had one, I would bring one to your country! I just love the Dominican Republic :)
