We had to wait 6 months for the original iPhone to be released outside the US. At least it's not quite as long a wait this time.

Something or someone is gonna suffer...

Yes I am self confessed fanbon, so I dont really mind waiting. But based on past iphone releases its gonna be just weeks between the iPad and iPhone and not everyone will be able to buy both.

Its a shame Mr Jobs does not know how to under promise and over deliver, at the iphone 4.0 event he was asked would the ipad be put back for international customers... he said no...

I think it maybe more like they are unable to get international networks to agree to their terms or as mentioned in another post trying to sort out issues with wifi

if its a simple case of waiting for stock, that should not stop them issuing the price of their iPads in international destinations!

This is a horrible development, IMO. Other countries need this! Non-American developers (me, for instance) are struggling to be able to get their hands on an iPad!

+1. I can't simulate all the touches I need for my app on the simulator and I wouldn't even think of releasing something based on the sim alone. This just gives me 6 more weeks to finish it, by which time of course there will be 18 of them in the appstore .. well 118 probably. Sigh.

He might have been surprised by the demand of the iPad, but it's not fair to generalize in this way. Jobs certainly does know how to under promise and over deliver, and here's only the most recent example:

Promise: iPad will get 10 hours of battery life.

Delivery: 12 hours or more.

So in the meantime, current production will continue to flow into the US!
which will end up on ebay
What a ****ing pile of ****

How about stopping supply to the US for a month!

What *****

it's nothing special. It doesn't do anything I cannot do already. I will buy it when it has a front facing camera for skype, granted I can use my macbook pro for this, but at that point, I see some viability in the device.

this sentiment reminds me somewhat of this quote from Henry Ford:

"If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses."
— Henry Ford

You know, sometimes you need something that represents a paradigm shift rather than just a better version of what was already available.

well, that is good news. however how will that affect the release of the 3G versions? it's still on "late April" what ever that means. April 32nd?

I'll buy one when it's a real MBP-killer, not a gadget. But I have to say that Steve is a master in communicating with idiots and selling overpriced crap.

Heh heh. Love hearing foreignors complain how this isn't fair. Hey, English dudes - see what happens when you levy an excessive tax on tea? 240 years later - no iPads for you!

Battery is down to the use of the device and not everyone will get 12 hours. Yes they may have been surprised by demand but its only a week ago! They would have had a good indication then.. its nothing to be ashamed they could have just said then we may have to delay?

As I said its not about not being able to get one, easy enough via other sources but why the lack of info such as prices.

It is an American company, after all.

Hehe, I have to laugh at all the people saying "this sucks/makes no business sense/they should've invested in better manufacturing methods".

Apple, like a lot of manufacturers, are simply employing the legitimate tactic of ramping up demand by limiting supply. You don't make money making zillions of products and selling hundreds, whereas you do if you make hundreds and sell those hundreds quickly. They've always done it that way, and its worked pretty darn good thus far - people have always lusted after a new product from Apple.

I don't think that kind of thinking applies here. Artificially limiting supply would only make sense if they used the opportunity to raise prices per unit, which they don't. Trust me, the inability to keep up with demand is NOT a clever business strategy for a mass market consumer electronics company like Apple. Especially not when you concider the fact that half a dozen competitors to the iPad will be on the market very soon. If the iPad isn't out there for people to buy, Apple will just leave those markets open to the competition. Not good.

Multitasking is coming, and it's not meant to be a MBP-killer, so you'll have a long wait. This is a new type of device with a new type of interface. Get ready to see millions and millions of "idiots" buying into this new wave of computing. Don't get drowned by the wave.

Yes, physics says that's so, but the reviews talked about non-stop video playback for far more than 10 hours, so I think this is a valid example of under promising and over delivering.

You're forgetting something. We get Apple SUPER tax. The ball's in your court.

Why would they attempt to make 'a real MBP-killer'???

That wouldn't be too clever of them, now would it?

That has to go down as 'stupid rant of the day'

Is anyone really surprised at the shortage? I mean Apple NEVER makes enough of ANYTHING. EVER.

Their always short. It's just a way to grab more headlines, and get free press. I mean would there be just as much press if the shelves were always nearly full? No, but now all everyone talks about is how delayed the iPads are because everyone in America is buying 5. If their so delayed it must mean their super awesome.

Well alot of people are unable to test this... still thank goodness my other new Apple Toy is on its way...a nice spanking new 17' MBP due next week...:)

I knew something like this was gonna happy.

So glad I imported now will enjoy my iPad for a good 7 weeks before general release. :D
