Over 500,000 iPads Sold, Apple Delays International Delivery until May

On noes!! Must be more fanbois that we thought!

But I thought everyone wanted Flash? Why is demand so high for a product that doesn't do Flash??

This must be eating away at Adobe like nothing else.

Exactly! All these people must not be aware that Flash is synonymous with the Internet, and only with Flash can you have a true, full Internet Experience! HA! Wait 'til they find out they can't play Mafia Wars on hook up an external USB drive! They may have bought them by the 100s of thousands but for sure they will be returning them once they know!

Personally, the only time the absence of Flash has shown up for me, is when certain financial websites do their trend charts in flash, but those could be done another way. Otherwise I haven't nonticed. :D

Though I would buy an iPad, I don't feel the disappointment for this delay. It still makes better sense to buy the 2nd or 3rd gen iPad. But I gotta hand it to all the early adopters out there. Thank you so much for doing the beta testing for the iPad so that I can buy a much improved version next year.

Our reseller location can't keep them in stock. I'm sure the number of sales would increase if channel partners could maintain a solid flow.

I Love Europe

I have a passport, I lived in Europe for years. I love Europe and I think Europeans have all the abilities in the world. Yet the so-called Euro-Crats and the EU Government suck. Suck innovation, suck talent, suck ambition out of their population. I have nothing against cheese regulation, just the way it is......

No problem ;)

We'll get an improved version, too, in addition to our 6 months to 1 year of iPad bliss...

Good on you! Why don't you just uninstall Flash Player, period?

Go back to web 1990, while the rest of the world enjoys their web the way it is meant to be, in 2010. With HTML and Flash. And in the future, with HTML5 and Flash.

Who cares what you haven't "nonticed"?

Actually, Tim Berners Lee didn't have his NeXTSTEP (OSX Predecessor) powered, magnesium Cube up and running the world's first web server until 1991. Yep, I've got one in addition to my iPad.

Even within the EU, some people tend to see the EU as a more powerful and wasteful entity than what it is in reality. In terms of trade, it is necessary, as it breaks down national trade barriers and imposes similar consumer rights across Europe (it even has an effect in non-EU countries).

Talking of which, I'll see you, Apple with the '14 day free return' policy of Apple UK. The hype started last year, by the time I will see the first iPad in UK shops will be over half a year after. I'm tired, other people are, too. But now I really want to try it and return it unless I'll be blown away. But I know I won't be. What I see now suggests that I will be really happy when I return it for a refund, safe in the knowledge that I tried, but the device is far too limited.

Those are good self reliant patriotic American homeless people who are starving themselves to death while working three jobs so they can prove to the world how much better our system is than yours. Are your people willing to starve to death while working three jobs without health care?

I don't think you have any room to talk until you have a good percent of your population living in cardboard boxes. (Unfortunatly, many of our people are the lazy ones who don't pay property tax on their box.)

Wheres ****in Che when you need him!!!

It's not like Apple had a crystal ball telling them this was going to be a smash hit.

Oh come on. Companies like Apple don't employ kids straight out of school, they employ the best so if their Marketing dept. have misjudged this so badly they should all be sacked en masse.

There have been rumours/predictions/interest in an Apple tablet device for years now. The hype and buzz when the iPad was first announced was phenomenal. They started pre-orders in the US on 12th March and shipped on 7th April so the number of pre-orders and the queues in the retail stores on launch day should have given them a very good idea of demand.

Of course this doesn't mean that they would have been able to ramp up production to still meet the late April date, but they should have known much earlier that the international release date would have to be put back instead of keeping Late April showing on the online stores right up to yesterday.

As late as last week Jobs himself said that late April was the date; all the online stores went down on Tues. for the MBP updates and when they came back up it still said late April then suddenly, middle of the day (UK time) yesterday, it changed to late May.

Here is a good way to put things in perspective. The iPhone took 74 days to sell 1 million units. And it was a phone, something which had a well established purpose.

The iPad could very well sell 1 million units in 30 days (probably depending on supply). The price ranges from $500 - $850, give or take, so many of the units are more expensive then the iPhone. Not only that, it is a product which has no real precedent. It is the first of its kind and therefore there is no way whatsoever to really tell how people will react to it.

If the iPad makes the 1 million mark in 30 days that will be pretty remarkable. I knew it would do well but I don't think anyone really expected it to sell as quickly as it has. Nobody screwed up. Quite the opposite. Apple has made this is a smash hit. No one needs to be sacked and yeah some people outside the United States are going to be upset they cant get it at the original date announced its really not a big deal.

And this is not me being an Apple apologist or cheerleader. Just stating that being a victim of its own unpredictable success (and if you read the comments almost everywhere before it was released it was not exactly greatly received) is not really their fault.

Great, thanks Apple for screwing over the rest of the world, as if we don't suffer enough with the inflated prices. Of course what they meant to say is "We are sorting out the wifi issues but don't want to admit it".

And you are such an authority on "the wifi issues" because of the one you don't have?

I have one, have hooked it up to my home network, the Acela train network, my business network, the train station network, a friend's network and a Verizon MiFi access point. All with no drops whatsoever, and extremely solid performance. The reports of "wifi issues" are restricted to less than 2% of users (I would bet it to be far less than that). Those numbers are in line with the number of people who would typically complain of wireless issues with any device/configuration. Fact is that wireless networks are always subject to the vagaries of interference, poor configurations and just plain old user error.

You might want to actually have one in your hand before you start making statements about things of which you have no knowledge.

Hell, the pre-announcement hype was almost deafening. It wasn't just the usual tech crowd either; the traditional media was covering it as well.

Unless sales are far higher than the iPhone, it's absurd to claim that demand has wildly exceeded expectations. I'm sure Steve and Apple were fully expecting a hit, at least in the short term.

The iPad could very well sell 1 million units in 30 days (probably depending on supply).

Hm. If so, fair enough.

(and if you read the comments almost everywhere before it was released it was not exactly greatly received)

Oh please. Nobody takes such whiners seriously. The vast majority have never owned an Apple product in their life. Actual, reasonable journalists and tech pundits who played with the iPad for a few minutes were very excited about it.

US first/Europe first - whatever. It's true the US tend to get new techno from Apple first - it's not unusual.

But, for all you Brits seething you've got to wait a little longer (me included) remember this - the iPhone contract you have with O2 (or whoever) - is a BARGAIN compared to the US

I get 1200 text and 1200 minutes and UNLIMITED data (within reason I suppose but I use iphone a lot on 3G) for £35 a month - what's that in $? 57 USD inc tax or there abouts?

Last time I was in the US I got talking to someone on the AT&T network with his Iphone and he says the avg contract is around $100 a month - wow - can you imagine paying that in the UK

Oh, and our 3G network is pretty good - we don't have their issues with carriers.

And what's more important is that they have a sandwich that has fried chicken instead of bread and has ham and processed cheese as a filling - that's soo coool - why doesn't KFC do that in the UK - risk aversion ;-)

Oh, but on the downside we have to wait an extra day to get American Idol aired and then they have the cheek to cut down a 2 hours episode to 1 hour by removing most of the adverts!

We get it so hard in the UK :D

Want an iPad that bad? Get an import - I got one for the wife's birthday and it was well worth b'day bonus I got:p

You're quite welcome. However, I didn't feel too much like a beta tester the other night, when I was sitting at the bar, eating my dinner and drinking a beer, while watching my favorite baseball team play live on my iPad, and keeping up with my work and personal email...

Or when I was watching my Netflix queue stream live over the internet while riding the train....

Or reading the Wall Street Journal on Sunday while eating lunch at one of my favorite restaurants...

Or reading my Kindle books on a display that makes them look better than they did on my Kindle...

Or listening to NPR on the way to work...

Or, well, I think you get the idea...

If the iPad is slow with multi-tasking, then the 3Gs will be too. They both have 256 megs of RAM.

So, you're saying Apple shouldn't upgrade future products just so you'll feel good about your current purchase?

Wow, the narcissism in these forums runs rampant.

You clearly haven't understood. I CAN'T purchase one! it's not out here.

When i can purchase one, we'll be near to seeing OS 4.0 on the iPad - we've not seen it yet.. what makes you think that multitasking will be identical on the iPad? the large screen estate lends itself to more complex things including widgets - and it might have more memory intensive solutions at a later date including floating windows running different apps. With a larger screen, there are more things to be saved to the RAM for each app, so experiences with the 3GS are not representative of the iPad.

I've seen apple screw people around too many times to be able to be confident that buying an iPad in June will equate to a good investment.

Oh, and please noone feed me the '"should buy when the product meets your needs" crap because noone NEEDS this product. And that is probably apple's reasoning for launching the iPad and then immediately announcing OS 4.0 - because noone can complain when the features are not advertised at purchase.

So much better than actually talking to a real human being who might happen to be nearby.

Funny little bubbles we like to live in these day - Kinda sad this is where we are all going. Moving around in our own technical cocoon whilst not interacting with other real people.

Part of me longs for the day when none of this existed and you have a local community of friends who actually knew, spoke and saw each other.

Perhaps you're overthinking it a little. This discussion forum tends to do that - encouraging people to worry about picky little stuff than may not ever happen.

It's not an "investment"...it's just a media device - something designed to enhance your life a little bit - you don't "need" it. The amount of anxiety, projection, and conspiracy concern you're suggesting just isn't worth something you'd be buying for that simple reason. Sounds to me like the best thing for you to do is just put the iPad aside in your mind for awhile, re-review it later this summer and see if you think it might be safe to buy it without making you feel like you've been screwed over somehow.
