Will a US 3G iPad work in Australia?

So given the delay I am going to get a 3G shipped to the inlaws in the States who can then Fedex it to me here in Australia.

Only question is, are there any network differences that would mean a US 3G won't work on the Aussie 3G networks?

My order says I am down for a "IPAD WI-FI + 3G 64GB-USA" - the USA bit added at the end concerns me slightly.

Any guidance appreciated.

It should be alright. I am assuming that there are no differences in the devices, and that the carriers won't be a problem. Apple is touting the device as completely unlocked, so it should be fine, but don't quote me on it.

I am hoping that when it hits our shores we will be able to do the same sort of thing you can in the US - buy as you go, on the device. I think this may be done in conjunction with AT&T though, and I doubt they would be bothered to make arrangements like that over here. They never did anything with Visual Voicemail for the iPhone, if that is anything to go off.

Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone are all reported to be readying micro SIMs for the iPad release.

I live in Canada and, actually, I'm OK with the international launch being delayed. My logic for this anti-intuitive stance is that maintaining/attaining a certain sales momentum in the USA will ultimately serve the international community better than simply getting the machine a few weeks earlier. I would prefer to see huge consumer acceptance of the iPad in the USA, which would be more likely to happen is supplies are readily available to them, than slower sales which might give a competitor an advantage or slow website conversion decisions.

According to Apple, the iPad runs all the same frequencies that the iPhone does, and the iPhone runs just fine here.

Plus it gives more time for international companies (websites, phone carriers, accessories) to perfect their products for launch. Companies can make their websites more iPad friendly, phone carriers can prepare micro SIMs, and accessory producers can see how well the US launch has gone, and ramp up production if necessary or just keep producing over the next month.

This is a horrible development, IMO. Other countries need this! Non-American developers (me, for instance) are struggling to be able to get their hands on an iPad!

I think non-US registered Apple developers should be able to buy one without having to wait for the consumer release.

But I thought everyone wanted Flash? Why is demand so high for a product that doesn't do Flash??

This must be eating away at Adobe like nothing else.

I willing to bet that most people awed by the iPad wouldn't know what flash means if it flashed in their face!

OK. But he'll need a micro-sim for the data plan he wants to use in Australia? And probably have to jailbreak it so he can find an app that lets him hit the Austrailian 3G network provider?

Wow I was wrong about selling 450k in first two months.

Now with the delay, and clearly massive international demand (given all the negs in this thread), I could see the iPad passing total number of kindles before the end of this year.

I realise I'd need a micro-sim, but why on earth would I have to jailbreak it?

I'm hoping that since the iPad is unlocked, the device is agnostic as to which provider you use - AT&T, Verizon, Optus, Telstra, etc.

I've never heard it suggested you need to jailbreak the device to use on a different network. I certainly didn't need to jailbreak my iPhone to use T-Mobile in the US (although I only got Edge, of course).

In the same way that the US developers got their pre-release too?

And I'm not talking about the big companies like the Wall Street Journal.

No, but at the same time as US developers.

If you're paid up and in the registered Apple Dev Program, why should some devs get it and others have to wait? They all pay the same fee but for unequal treatment.

Apple needs to put in place a system to provide devices to its developers, no matter where you are located. May be 1 device if you are an individual and 2 if you are a company.

I don't know for sure, but I suspect that it will work (other than the obvious that you'll need a power adapter or a new charger).

However, to be sure, why not contact Apple (is there an Apple store down under?) and tell them your friend is coming to visit and wants to know if his iPad 3G will work and whether he can get a micro-sim that will work there?

Good luck. I hope it works out for you.

I am in the same boat you are - I am based in Oz. I am going to NY in June though (95% certain) and plan to pick up a 3G over there, use a $15 prepay for teh week I am there and then get a plan here in Oz.

My main concerns about this plan are:

- Will the plans in Oz be craptastic and thus I will not be inclined to pay them for 3G making my device a wifi only machine
- Can I activate the device in store in the US and be able to load up some data instore (from a USB stick)

Apple store people can be pretty nice, not sure about Best Buy. I suspect they would let you do it.

I will be buying from the 5th Ave Apple store - half tempted to book a Genius bar appointment...

I hope this does not mean a delay of the 3g ones here in the US. That is what I need and have been holding out for. I need the 64 gb model. Well, if it does, guess that mean I must wait - but I really need it for summer trips, and one of them is in August (that one is a work trip). I do not want to be fighting the lines on an iphone release weekend, to buy my ipad so I can make sure it is synced and working properly for August.

 - please oh please ramp up the production, but not to the point of having manufacturing flaws and cutting quality control.

Well, maybe by the time I get mine, it will come pre-loaded with iphone 4.0. but then again, given the flaws and issues of a .0 release, not sure I want to deal with that.

 - really do not want to settle for a wifi model given the limited free wifi hotspots in my destinations.

iPad - Singapore

Pity we have to wait as they are being offered here on the black market for an exorbitant price and the delay is resulting in a few making a lot of money out of this new device.

As far as Singapore is concerned - in the Apple world we are second class citizens as the Apple Apps store here only offers iPhone Apps - no music and no movies. I am not sure whether this is Apple or the somewhat archaic laws here that prevent citizens from freedom of choice, while the government wonders why the population is falling while we read that some charity organisations have commented that some married couples "don't know how to do it". Perhaps a more liberal view is required if we are really to become more in tune in the rest of the world...

Or is it thy are protecting their own markets?

Come on Singapore wake up.... it's 2010.
