I've conferred with my liver and he's given a grudging "if you must...." before slumping back and sulking into my gall-bladder.

But enough of him. He's such a nay-sayer. I'll be there again this year! Looking forward to seeing you all again and meeting some more MRians :)

I've found a pic to demonstrate the handles I'm talking about...

Those are the ones... that seem to come in a variety of styles across the windows...

I'm fairly sure those are to prevent low-hanging tree branches smashing against the windows and to prune the smaller branches away...

That does sound plausible... and far less interesting that I'd hoped. I must go through 'pruned' routes since I don't seem to have branches hit regularly. I guess making them look like regular bus poles means that they save cash...

Brilliant news... :)

Ah, it's a pleasure :D

Yeah. On newer busses they seem to look ok, but where they've been hastily welded to the old No. 51's round here it just looks like they had some buses, some metal tubing, a welder and some spare time.

They really need some sort of bird-avoidance technology. Bird-strikes when sat on the top deck scare the bejeezus out of me.

The 18 used to be the worst route for branches until they replaced it with bendy buses. I used to take that bus back home the morning after a night out as I'd often stay the night at a friend's place in euston, so I'd be sitting in BV's fav spot (mine also) having branches crash into the bus scaring the crap out of me as I almost dose off in my hungover induced zombie like state almost constantly.

In Coventry the buses I used to get back home would regularly hit the cut off remains of a branch and smash a big hole in the top corner of the bus.
It was far enough along the route for me to be dozing too:(

You could train it down – there's a few of us coming from Scotland. Join us at Newcastle! :D

That might have to be done. Do you know the details of the train and such likes you getting?

As for the giant inflatable apple, thats a bit of a PITA, especially when the 3rd result on google is that post in this thread... *Sigh*

My preferred spot is also at the front, but at the other side of the bus – you generally get a bit of extra legroom there, especially on the older buses.

Once when I was a little Jaffa and I was sat in your favourite seat, the bus clipped a traffic light – that was quite scary, there were sparks and everything.

I'm setting a challenge for someone to bring a giant inflatable apple this year :apple:

Greenpeace apparently had one at MacWorld. Maybe somebody should "borrow" theirs. ;)

I was hoping to be able to fly in for this event, but sadly it will not be happening this year. :( Maybe I'll be able to make it next year.

I hope the Greenpeace one was manufactured in a non environmentally damaging way and was not produced from anything that was derived from fossil fuels.

Oh no. I'm already on holidays the first two weeks of July.

Have a good time.

You'd be alright now fella, they armour plate them to protect them from the bricks that are hurled by the local scroats. ;)

There's not so much a bus than an armoured personnel carrier then?

I'm fairly sure those are to prevent low-hanging tree branches smashing against the windows and to prune the smaller branches away... That seat on the left-hand side front of the top deck is always my preferred spot, and I've occasionally jumped out of my skin when there's a huge crash on the window while going down some of the leafier streets.
It's a good spot. (in fact that day you saw me off in Islington I picked that precise spot)

I like to think of those handles as options for when the bus gets too crowded. :D

I prefer the left side as the bus tends to lean over that way more often than the other way so you can lean into the corner and not be thrown about so much.

This is majorly OT so I'll say something picnic related.

I left my frisbe ontop of my wardrobe in my drom room when I left last term, some bastard who the university rented my room out to over the easter stole it so it won't be making an appearance this time .

 Coventrys not that bad!

OK. It's not that bad. But it's pretty bad. When I've been back I haven't ventured into the City Centre for about 3 years.

I have one. If the dogs haven't eaten it by then I'll bring it!
