I could cry

This works so brilliantly - I had to downgrade iTunes but otherwise, with 1.1.1 installed, I have my ringtones back. I'd buy them from iTunes if I just could, but almost all my songs are either not available at all or can't be made into ringtones. Now I'm a happy girl once more.

Thank you.
:)

THIS WORKS!!!!!!!!!!!! -- use the cradle!!!

Ok, I've tried this method many different ways, and the best way I could come up with was the following, detailed out step by step:

First, pick the mp3 you wish to edit. Edit it down as an mp3, and save it as an mp3. Put it into a folder, like a "ringtones" folder somewhere

Load the edited mp3 into itunes, and convert it to .m4a. Don't convert your original song first and then edit it; edit first and then convert.

Now that it's converted, right click your converted song in itunes, and hit "show in finder." Move that converted file to the same folder as your edited mp3.

Remove both versions from itunes. You could probably keep the mp3, but why?

Now right click your m4a file in finder, and hit "get info." Change the extension there to .m4r.

Double click the renamed m4r file, and it will load up into itunes 7.4.0, under "ringtones."

Sync the iphone. It will show up, but will not play.

Now go back to that original song, and hit "get info" again. Rename it back to .m4a, and then load up MakeiPhoneRingtone. Drag your m4a file to MakeiPhoneRingtone, and it will show up in itunes under "ringtones" again.

Sync your iPhone again. Now it will play.

Just so you know, this was the only way I could get my ringtones to load in itunes under "ringtones," show up in my iPhone, and play. If I did any of these steps out of order (convert the song first, etc), it would not work. I would also recommend doing one or two songs at first to verify your results, and then doing a few more at a time. It's time consuming at first, but after a while it gets better.

I can confirm this DOES WORK!
On some ringtones, not others. FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS EXACTLY!!!
AND USE THE CRADLE. I did it last night to no avail, then in a huff re-installed iTunes 7.4.2 deciding to wait for iToner fix. Today I reinstalled iTunes 7.4 and did all the extension renaming and used the cradle. IT WORKED!!!! Happy days are here again.. ba ba ba ba da ding da ding.:D;):D;)

This is getting ridiculous... I cannot follow these instructions they jump around too much... granted a lot is my fault because of my disability... CAN SOMEONE PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE write out SPECIFIC instructions to do this...

I really cannot follow along and i some how after deleting all my ringtones now have my one ringtone on the list twice and neither will play!

Ok. Lets try to keep it simple and do it step by step.
1-iTunes Preferences<Advanced<Copy files to iTunes music library when importing.

2- Create an AAC file that you would like to be a ringtone and place it on your desktop. If this file already exists in your iTunes library you need to delete it.

3- Get Info on AAC file and change the extension from m4a to m4r

4- Double click the m4r file on your desktop to add to iTunes. A new m4r file will be added to iTunes under the ringtones tab and will be in a folder called "ringtones" in you iTunes music library.

5- The original m4r file from step 3 will still be on your desktop, change the extension back to m4a.

6- Open MakeiphoneRingtone

7- Drag m4a file from desktop to MakeiPhoneRingtone. This will add a second file to both your ringtone tab and ringtone folder. One file will be a m4r and the other will be a modified m4a.

8- Sync your phone with sync ringtones selected. Sync All Ringtones

9- The ringtone will appear under Settings<Sounds < Ringtone and will now play.

10- I have had a ringtone not play after doing this and had to delete and add it again. It will work.

Good luck

Also, if you already have ringtones on your iPhone not sourced from iTunes, but still in the iTunes folder under 7.4.0 or 7.4.1 (but not under 7.4.2 or 7.4.3), those ringtones will survive the 1.1.1 update and will continue to show under the Ringtones tab in iTunes.

All my ringtones survived the 1.1.1 upgrade under iTunes 7.4.1 (OS X Edition) and continue to work, though I have not tried to add new ones or change existing ones.

EFF THIS!!!! IT DONT WORK!!!!!!!!

EFF THIS!!!! IT DONT WORK!!!!!!!!

Are you using iTunes 7.4.0 and MakeiPhoneRingtones?

If you are then I cant explain why it isnt working for you? Do you get two of the same file in your ringtone tab?

Sorry you cant make it work... but it does work. Try a different ringtone.

EFF THIS!!!! IT DONT WORK!!!!!!!!

I RETRACT MY STATEMENT I GOT IT TO WORK!!!!!! HOWEVER ITS NOT WHAT YOU SAID IT WAS!!!!

Here is how to do it!!

***iTunes Version 7.4.0***iPhone Version 1.1.1***

1-iTunes Preferences<Advanced<Copy files to iTunes music library when importing.

2- Create an AAC file that you would like to be a ringtone and place it on your desktop. If this file already exists in your iTunes library you need to delete it.

Basicly the same as what you wrote, however a step was skipped (the skipped step is now Number 5).

BINGO!!!!

I just dont get it. It does not work at all.
Doing it as Stonedgrace says, I have the ringtones on the iphones, but no sound. All the copies are where they should be.

Doing it as Pipesterdp says it never even make onto the iphone. Therefore no good.

I am not sure what the variable is here, but I am following the directions exactly. Stonegrace comes the closest but no Sound. I am using iTunes 7.40 and iphone 1.1.1 and makeiphoneringtone 1.02 but no dice.
I am about to give up having wasted 2 evenings attempting to do this.
Any idea what is happening???

Tried EVERYTHING and still NOTHING!

Good lord, I can't believe there isn't a 100% way to do this yet! Ugh, I am seriously considering rolling back to 1.0.2 JUST for the ringtones so I can identify callers easily.

pipesterdp: In your STEP 8, does that (for you) result in 2 files in your ringtones folder, BOTH with the m4a extension? For example I see "My Ring.m4a" and "My Ring 1.m4a" in the iTunes Ringtones folder right before I sync with the iPhone. Is this how it is working for you?

Also - Has anybody done this successfully on a PPC mac?

Hello Amcclay,

When I followed pipesterdp directions, I ended up with 2 identical file .m4a in my iTunes ringtone folder. I sync but the selections never showed up on the iPhone. Is that happening to you as well?

Doing it the original method, it makes it to the iPhone ringtone list , and I have a .m4a and a .m4r in my itunes ringtone folder, but no sound from the iphone.
Are you getting the same results?

TRY THIS....

In the prefs of itunes I noticed that i have "Keep iTunes Music folder organized" NOT CHECKED........ Copy files to itunes music folder when adding to library is CHECKED

It's the weirdest thing, I finally got about 6 of them on. When I tried loading on a song (Boston) it didn't work, and then I realized that 2 other tones stopped working. I removed Boston from the itunes library, resynced and the other two songs started working again!! Sooo strange.

Success On A PPC Mac (Finally)

Ok, unfortunately, all of the hocus pocus and randomness of this process is very true. Using this process, I just kept putting on ringtone after ringtone until at least one of them worked. Eventually one did. For whatever reason, I noticed that the ones that were working were very short normal (non-musical) ringtones that were 1 second long or shorter.

I started using Fission to modify other ringtones to be less than 1 second and save them out again. After this many more started to work. Some required different tweaks to the waveform, trimming a bit off of the beginning or end - but they almost all eventually worked. So, I would recommend doing this:

In iTunes prefs,
I had 'keep itunes folder organized' UNCHECKED, and 'Copy Files' CHECKED

- Open the ringtone you want in QUICKTIME Player
- Export that ringtone as an AIFF
- Open that AIFF in QUICKTIME player
- Edit it down to 1 second or less
- Export as MP4 to your desktop
- Rename the MP4 on your desktop to M4R
- Drag the M4R to iTunes - it will appear in the ringtones tab
- Sync your iPhone
- After Sync, go back to desktop and rename M4R to M4A
- Open MakeiPhoneRingTone and drop the M4A file onto it
- You will now see two ringtones with the same name
- Sync your iPhone again

Do this for 3 or 4 short ringtones just to see if any of them work. If they do, you will at least know it is POSSIBLE. Then you can start messing with different things like editing the M4A in Fission first, or trimming the AIFF file in different ways. Make multiple versions of the same ringtone with slight variances. I did this, and eventually one worked.

Good luck!

Thanks for your help.

I am going back to 1.02 and going to use iToner as I was doing.
I will do without the 1.1.1 enhancments just to send a message to Apple that they can just bite my Banana

It is just not worth it.
Out of the box it was 1.00 or 1.01 and iPhone worked just fine.
Who needs Apple's totalitarian approach and coercement to buy songs from them that I already PREVIOUSLY purchased and own. People have hacked their expensive phones to gain what Apple took away after paying $600 for a cell phone. It is afterall their cell phone. Now Apple wants more money from all of us and Apple wants it all.

Apple punishes those who chnage their phone by destroying their $600 investment with an update as if to get even with these freedom fighters. It's my phone, I paid for it, and I will do as I please !!!
Shame on Apple

PS I never hacked my iphone, but I want my own ringtones, and won't pay twice for them.

is there anyway to do it with WIndows XP? At lease to put one ringtone. I got 1.1.1 and preinstalled ringtones annoying, some ppl were even laughing that i got that kind of ringtone but i don't want any english ringtone, i want some russian that i used to have on my previous samsung. Greedy Apple:(

Well I finally did it.
I reverted my firmware back to 1.0.2 and am able to install ringtones using iToner as before. But then I got real curious and installed AppTap (installer). Let me say what a difference being able to install all these new applications on my iphone. They all work and they are installed locally not Web type apps that Jobs wanted us all to use. Add as many icons on the main screen (springboard) and use all these real neat applications. It is like having my old Treo 700wx with windows mobile 5 meaning the ability to really use my iphone as a phone and a mini computer as it should be intended to be used with customized applications. These are the things Apple does not want you to find out. I am really happy now. Free Ringtones, Very useful applications, and I'm taking back ownership of my iphone from Apple. I paid for it and now I will use it how I want to. It is very stable and all it required was some careful research and learning what others are doing. And no, you won't brick your phone.
