Did u do it with WIndows? Did u upgrade back to 1.1.1?

I use a power pc mac.
I was on 1.1.1 and reverted to 1.0.2.

You can also do it with windows, just need to use a different installer. Do a search.

Using this this guide below and following exactly it worked like a charm adding the installer.
They also explain the advantages in very simple straight forward language.

First of course you need to restore back to 1.02 so do a search on google to find the directions
I did not save them. If you require them, I can find them again for you.

I will make it clear that I did NOT unlock my phone. Unlocking allows use on other networks other than ATT and I am happy using ATT. I CAN go back to 1.1.1 but then I would lose all my applications, ringtones, and freedom. It is a matter of simply restoring back to 1.1.1, but why? For iTunes? I can get those off my computer. Everything still works with iTunes, syncs, etc.
Read the guide and see why it is so very compelling. These developers worked very hard.

I only wanted my ringtones, but when I saw what else I could do with my iPhone, well the rest is history.

ringtones

On PPC G4, iPhone firmware 1.1.1... followed instructions and
finally got it to work. The trick is to make sure your file names
are short. Originally they were too long and nothing synced.
After I changed the file names, synced.

I have gotten 2 ringtones to work like this. Most of the time, though, the songs end up listed on my iPhone, but no sound plays when I select them.

Can't really figure out any rhyme or reason here...

Were the file names long? (For those that do not play sound)
Did you use the iPhone dock/cradle?

Apple punishes those who chnage their phone by destroying their $600 investment with an update as if to get even with these freedom fighters.

Mutual funds are investments. Treasury bonds are investments. An iPhone is not an investment. (Almost) all of the money you spend on an iPhone will eventually be lost anyway.

Hey, if anyone has done it with Windows, let know.. i really wonna at at least some of my ringtones that i used to have on pervious phone instead the annoying preinstalled... iTunes doesn't have any that i used to have

I tried a variety of filenames. Couldn't get a 'non working ringtone' to work by shortening its name. Also, it seems some 'file' name info is stored in the ID3 tags (or something??) because even when i change the name by 'get info' in finder or even 'get info' within itunes, sometimes the file name is still the old one on the iPhone itself. I'm not sure whats going on there.

I have used both the cable and the dock. I got 2 to work using the cable and 0 to work using the dock. I'd be very surprised if this made any difference...

I'm just hoping Andrew (moki) at Ambrosia can get iToner working quickly...

This workaround, in my experience, is very unreliable.

yeah yeah yeah.... investment or not. It is my money, therefore my purchase and my investment in technology. I expect it to work the way I want it to work, and now it does with a firmware revert to 1.0.2. Your point is well taken although stated out of context.

Go back to 1.0.2 and you will use iToner for your ringtones without effort. You do NOT need to unlock to do this. It is simply a doagnostic restore to an earlier version. You can stay at this firmware version indefinately if you desire.

I was under the impression that it was difficult to go back to 1.0.2??

It was easy to go from 7.4.2 to 7.4.0 in itunes - is it just as simple for the phone?

Any link to a good site with directions would be appreciated.

Cheers.

Well I bit the bullet and went back to 1.0.2.

So far, so good...

Sounds like you went back to the older firmware.

Well, I had the same exact issue as you stated... where you'd change
the name and it will show up as the old longer name in iTunes.
What I did was go to finder, right click on the file, get info, and
clear out all the text fields for the file, since that's where iTunes
pulled the longer names from (I'm assuming) and then change
the file names to something shorter. Worked great for me.

Good for you and it was not really hard .... was it?
It gets a bit scarey initially, but I used AppTap to get me out of the yellow triangle jam and was good ever since. There is just no point in staying at 1.1.1 and struggling with Apple's obstacles.
Now ringtones are as easy as befor and I get a real IM chat program, and loads of other applications.
Thanks to all the programmers who made this possible.

Nope, it wasn't too tough.

I'm a little skeptical about battery life, but as long as I can restore the phone to 100% 'factory settings,' then I'm not too worried about. (I *think* I would be able to restore - that's what I've read, at least).

I miss the double tap for period, and the double home button click, but those aren't big enough upgrades.

I'm just thinking about what I'll do when an Apple update comes out that I actually want...

For now, I'll enjoy my own ringtones and customized look of the phone. And a few fun games as well...

Cheers
