I noticed that google maps has been updated around my house. There are more recent satellite photos at certain zoom levels (theres construction by my house that was completed 3 years ago and its finally being reflected on the phone) *Just checked maps.google.com, it seems like its only updated on the iphone, not on their website.*

More bars!

Just updated to 1.1.4 with no problems. Like a few others here, I noticed that my signal strength got stronger--it was at 3 bars just before the update and it went up to 4 after the restart. Didn't move the phone at all.

Can't say the same here. I went from 2 bars to no service, but I never get good service at home anyway.

Woah, Google Maps Location services are definitely far more accurate. The entire OS seems a little snappier (especially Safari). A great update, even though we haven't yet seen the main attraction of 1.1.4. (3rd party apps)

I noticed that the safari screens are wiped clean again after safari is closed. A little disappointing, but I guess there's no use wasting power when its not in use.

I disagree . I just tried it and it says I am 1 mile away from my house. when I tried it on 113 it was dead on right to the house.

This is why we need a native aim app. What the sense of having an awesome aim app via the web browser but not able to stay on because the tab or site goes white. Lame.

1.1.4 Is the CPU Clocked faster?

I noticed a bunch of post here say the 1.1.4 seems to make some things snappier. Can some one run sysinfo on their jail broken 1.1.4 and see if the cpu speed has been increased.

I just installed 1.1.4 and can't say that I notice any difference. This seems like the usual perceived improvement after a restart.

As for reception, it read 4 bars before, and 3 bars after.

Downloaded and installed. Not a great deal of change. I get a better Safari ...camera...meh - no change - and I took two nearly identical shots before and after update.

The google maps is still way off.... I live outside the ring of the crosshair! It centers in on one of the local towers that's half a mile away. Although I do get weak reception at my house. Wait - I take that back - it appears as 4 bars now and I used to be near-about 2 bars....hmmmm. That's cool!

I hope mine eyes don't deceive!

I hope other benefits come to light in the next few days. As for the whole flash arguement - seems pretty clear to em that it won't happen (based on some of the things I've read here tonight)

Maybe "they'll" do some sort of completely new flash structure. Whaddo I know - I make art not flash programming. But as I have heard - NOTHING is impossible and as I grow older realize more clearly.

Btw - I too have read just about every page...

Okay, just updated, and I didnt notice these things discussed yet. Maybe its just me, but I feel like my speaker is a bit louder now, and (this ones small, I know), in the iPod, any "flipping" animation such as clicking an album cover in Cover Flow actually seems slower, but in a good way. Smooth animation, pleasant speed. Maybe that one is just me...

Camera quality is most definitely better. I havent really noticed a huge difference in Safari, I havent tested on wifi yet though.

Nothing else really jumps out at me...

I have to disagree also. It's about the same as it was before the update. The pin is where I am and that's like 5 miles away from the circle. Being in the boonies sucks.

I have 2-3 ideas for simple apps that would make my life easier. I check the dev download site daily.

I concur! There are a few potential apps that could really make for a much more useful iPhone or even Touch for that matter.

As to the original posters comments about lay people not being able to make use of the SDK, he should realize that a lot of great apps in this world came from people with little formal training as programmers. In any event a great app does something you need done and is often very simple, the app is even greater if it can do things for many others also.

unknown problem

I hope it's not just me, but I haven't been able to get my iPhone to update this firmware - each attempt starts with extracting the update and then the progress bar saying it is preparing the iphone and then the same "unknown error" - is this happening to anyone else? yuck!

Has anyone....

gone into Starbucks with their 1.1.4 iPhone/iPod Touch, after the three-hour closure?Anything new happen?

Tried on mine, everything went white after loading the 6th site.

Guys remember that the iPhone and Touch are resource starved machines. In this case the limited resource is RAM. If you run out of RAM you have little choice but to delete objects from memory to service current needs.

Here's a thought...

Maybe "Bug Fixes" actually means "Bug Fixes"! I know, its ridiculous, how could the release be what they say it will be but its possible. What if what Apple indeed fixed were bug fixes, and no new, secret unannounced features!

Just saying...

I am not so sure. I would like to agree (but I am just way too optimistic) so I'll have to say that today was more than coincidence. Steve Jobs could have said anything today like "The SDK is harder than expected and will be available next month", but instead, Apple released an iPhone and iPod Touch software update. This suggests that we will see something in the next few days. If not an SDK, then at least a note that this is going to take longer. Or else, this is all going to be the sickest joke that Apple has played... Along with the G4 Cube and the Apple Quicktake.

Apple has made the right choice here, going with the open Industry Standard of H.264, and if they can support Flash for cheap (in terms of money, and computing resources), they will do that too, but dont expect that anytime soon.

I'm of the opinion now that Apple will simply ignore Flash. it might come as a third party app but that would be it. What I see them doing instead is simply bridging the machines to the new HTML standards which support embedded media.

I don't personally like this, as yes Flash is important for some usage. I also recognize that Flash, as used on many sites, would simply kill the Touch devices performance wise. It isn't just an issue of processor performance either as many flash sites eat RAM.

The bigger question in my mind is when does Safari on these devices get updated to the latest HTML standards? I actually shouldn't be using the word standard here as I'm not sure HTML 5 has been approved yet. Long term I believe Apple is moving in the right direction, but short term it is very frustrating. Even this move of Apple's has to be qualified as we need to acknowledge that the industry might not move in that direction very fast.
