Just drove by the local starbucks...i'm very sad to report nothing exciting looked like it was happening...a bunch of employees talking behind the counter :/

I almost wonder what people are expecting-- Some super secret delivery of space age robots?

I'm dying to hear from my classmate. I told her about the conspiracy links between the Apple updates and the mass closing of Starbucks-- and she refuses to believe it's anything more than a retraining of how the coffee gets made, lol.

I do wish they would add MMS, mostly because how much of a pain it is when someone sends me one. I agree AT&T should allow you to set up an e-mail address that MMS pictures get forwarded to.

One of my favorite parts of MMS on other phones is that you can almost always save the pictures to your phone and keep them. The iPhone has no way to save anything. Even if someone e-mails you a picture you cannot save it. You have to log into the mail account on your computer to be able to do that.

Most people I know are totally shocked when I tell them my iPhone can't do MMS. They see it as such a "wonder" device and it doesn't make sense to them that such a basic feather is missing.

Interesting update, strange that they don't say what they fixed.

I wonder if they'll update Safari with the latest WebKit (Safari 3.1) when 3.1 is released for the desktop. I hope so!

So... has anyone here on page 24 read all 580 posts in this thread?

I always wonder how many people are hard core enough to plow through the whole thing.

Especially on a really boring topic like an apparently-minor firmware update for a phone. ;) Or have we learned something interesting in the last 12 pages since I paid attention?

Safari preserves content(no white screens)???? No!! I just went to 3 sites: MacRumors, let it load, N4G, let it load, and then Nytimes, let it load. Went back, and Macrumors and N4g were white!

I admit I did. :p

proudly have. been on here since this thread had one post

You had an issue, many other people did not have the same problem. Doesn't make the experience less troubling for you, but doesn't necessarily warrant a general warning to the public at large about this particular update. Were you doing anything with iTunes, etc during your update? Just asking because there may be something from your experience that contributed to your difficulties that can be shared to possibly help someone else avoid the same frustrations. Hope you're not experiencing any issues post installation, though . . . that's never cool.

mine went super fast too. the longest part was downloading the update...

same here. i started reading all of this a little after 1pm today and here i sit at 8:05pm... haha

I have and allow me to summarize. For the couple words of useful information just read the main article on MR's front page.
<sarcasm>
People and complaining that the update doesn't all the iPhone to make them breakfast. Oh yeah, and complaining.
</sarcasm>
Now for my complaint. No 802.1x (RADIUS authentication) support. I mean this device amazes me but if it is market at my age group (older teenager, and you 20 somethings), then it would seem that 802.1x should be mandatory. Because unfortunately (or fortunately depending on the perspective) users are unable to access college's wifi networks.

I admit I did. :p

as did I, although I skimmed past all the "OMG WHY IS THERE NO FLASH!!1!1ONE!" posts. I'm downloading the update now and hope to confirm/deny some things. I took a "before" picture. ran those furbo benchmarks. wrote down the baseband version from field mode. I shall update shortly (installing as I type this)

I have to admit however, with over a 100 contacts in my addressbook, asking each one their carrier, and then having to enter the addresses in 100X is an effen PITA. :) MMS would be MUCH better.

search teh net for carrier prefix databases, you can jsut find the carrier yuself with 95% accuracy (the portability makes it a bit off, but not that much)

I don't understand the "Safari Tabs now preserve content (don't go to "white" screens)"
when I open a few tabs and then go back they are all white. Although it does seem to hold onto the rendered page for a bit longer.
the page also doesn't survive if I switch between portrait and landscape.

Please let us know ur findings illusions! I am excited to see if you confirm some of the things in this thread.

I agree it's stupid to build an entire site in Flash.
I hate it. The old Jackson site was done in PHP and worked great. And it was fast too. Who ever thought up the idea for intro animations needs to be dragged to the street and shot.
BUT... it's there and on a ton of sites.
I doubt they will all go out and redo their sites for us iPhone users.

I my self do not want flash. But I wanted to let people know that flash is more than movies. You can create a complete application using flash. Some people like it to provide a nice user interface. There are even complex games written in flash. Go to www.dofus.com and download the game, it is a massive multiplayer game written in Flash. It may give you an idea of what can be done.

Still I don't particular care for having flash on the iPhone, but is just me, some of you do.

FYI I don't like flash because most times is just a security hole waiting to be attacked. Rarely people write the code correctly. Also most browsers do not perform good data validation on the byte code of the flash, therefore the "flash" file can contain attacks. These get plug but more show up. I don't need the headache.

Update date change stuck at 2-28-08

First post ever, read 500+ posts on this thread, didn't see this comment, so here I go....

Before running the update, my next update date was set to 2-28-08. After completing the 1.1.4 firmware install, the check for update date posted in iTunes remains stuck at 2-28-08. I tried to manually "check for update", get back the standard msg, and then the same date (2-28-08) is returned. With 1.1.1, 1.1.2, and 1.1.3, I believe that the date reset. If I am not hallucinating, then maybe the 28th is the SDK date?

Re: Objective analysis of the update

Hello all, long time listener first time caller here!

I tried to do some objective analysis to test some of the "myths" about the 1.1.4 update but as you can probably tell I didn't get very far . These are my ramblings heh:

  • Javascript performance - I decided to test javascript performance using a little favourite of mine, a javascript raytracer  I used the "Original JS Raytracer Scene" and disabled "Display image while rendering" all other settings were left at defaults. The active time taken before the update was 38.982 seconds and after the update, 34.299 seconds. That averages out to an increase of about 5 pixels per second, just think of the possibilities! Furthermore I did some other javascript speed tests which proved on average 1.1.4 was about 10% faster.
  • Camera performance - I couldn't think of a smart way of testing an increase of fps, I thought of spinning the phone or a reference object then taking a picture and measuring the blur etc. Basically you’re going to just have to take my word for it; the camera fps seems markedly higher. Well it could be that the exposure of the camera has been reduced (very noticeable in low light conditions) with seemingly no detriment to picture quality. I also took pictures at stationary points and in all honesty because I'm too lazy to post the pics but trust me that there very similar. In summary the camera seems subjectively faster, the actual picture quality is about the same.
  • Safari Tabs - I can confirm that tabs now load in the background. I can say open engadget switch back to my main tab and then after some time switch yet again and engadet would then be fully loaded. Furthermore safari's cache of pages seems greatly increased - opening macrumors and then engadget in a separate tab used to cause macrumors to flush (i.e. go blank), this is no longer the case. Indeed this seems to have even extended to history i.e. pressing back will load the cached page rather than reloaded the page again, awesome.
  • Re-arrange icons glitch - Unfortunately this little annoyance is still there. For those of you who haven't experienced it... When your first home screen is full go into safari and press the plus button (like adding a bookmark). This then causes a blank second home screen to be formed.

hey, i just noticed that my google maps locate feature seems to be alot more accurate. when at my house it used to give about a mile radius, now its right on my cul-de-sac. i wasn't sure if anyone else noticed this

I'm dying to hear from my classmate. I told her about the conspiracy links between the Apple updates and the mass closing of Starbucks-- and she refuses to believe it's anything more than a retraining of how the coffee gets made, lol.

It was a CNN story:

Coffee break for Starbucks' 135,000 baristas
Coffee chain to close all 7,100 stores for employee training. Dunkin' Donuts offers 99 cent promotion.
February 26 2008: 8:09 AM EST

Starbucks lovers will have to look elsewhere for their caffeine fixes from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Warning to Starbucks junkies who usually get a fix on their way home from work: You're out of luck on Tuesday.

Starbucks, which last week announced 600 layoffs, plans to temporarily close its 7,100 U.S. stores on Tuesday for three hours of employee training.

The coffee chain said the in-store training program which will begin at 5:30 p.m. local time, would foster enthusiasm in its 135,000 U.S. employees and improve the quality of drinks made by Starbucks baristas.

"We believe that this is a bold demonstration of our commitment to our core and a reaffirmation of our coffee leadership," said chief executive Howard Schultz in a statement.

Stores that normally stay open beyond 8:30 p.m. will resume service after the training session is finished.

But for those who still need their afternoon dose of caffeine, there is a cheap alternative.

Dunkin' Donuts - "to ensure that no coffee lover is denied a delicious espresso-based beverage" - announced that it will offer small lattes, cappuccinos or espresso drinks for a promotional price of 99 cents on Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Starbucks (SBUX, Fortune 500) has seen rising competition from privately-held Dunkin' Donuts and McDonalds (MCD, Fortune 500) recently, and welcomed founder Schultz back as CEO in January after a lackluster performance by the company in the latter half of 2007.

Didn't Apple say the SDK was due February 29th? If so, why are we saying its delayed before the day has come? Maybe this was released today so that we could all have it installed so Friday they can roll out apps and the SDK without having a huge server overload.
