MBP is a joke, it need some major redesign....
Not. The macbook air is a novelty item, I have clock radio with better performance; they should bundle it as a value-add marketing item with the 8 core mac pros, otherwise it's useless. The macbook pro in performance and design is is the ferrari of laptops, there's no such thing as outdated in it's lexicon.

Two points....

The MacBook Pro is essentially the same as any other Santa Rosa laptop out there - not even a minor difference in performance.

As far as "outdated" - well, the MBP is guilty as charged as far as appearance is concerned. The styling hasn't really changed since the "PowerBook G4 (Gigabit Ethernet)" from 2001. Time for a fresh look, the vast expanse of silver metal is boring,.

If you want to see something horrific, HP has a laptop out there that has a crome finish - a sad attempt to 'pimp' out the laptop scene with 'bling'. I do agre, however, that the MacBook Pro needs updating - a flat simple, one tone colour style.

This might have already been said in this thread, but I didn't read anything but the OP. $500 isn't a big enough drop for what the air has. For a $3000 notebook I want 3G internet and more than one USB port and a mini-DVI connection. The Air is a cute concept and tons of people have bought it but they need to make it better before I will put that much cash down.

I agree. With the spec sheet on that thing (oh, and that glossy screen – eww!), it would have to cheaper than a Somo 650 or an iPaq 200-series. I am not kidding. I can use those for more (I have the Somo) on the road and they're much more portable – Even if I bring the external keyboard for the PDA.

Once the price drops another few hundred dollars, and the drive capacity doubles, I'd definitely be interested in picking one up. It's kind of like a cool prototype that publicly available. Once by the 2nd or 3rd iteration, this thing will be very cool.

...no built-in toaster, no purchase.
no vhs player, no purchase.
no electrical outlet for plugging in my toaster that's not built in, no purchase.
no cupholder, no purchase.
no 500 terabyte hard drive, no purchase.

...seriously? like, really?

why don't you just buy a mac pro and carry it around like a laptop? i know it's not exactly "portable"- but at least it has all those damn ports!

*Dur duh dur, I can't actually argue with somebody, so I'll just attack arguments they didn't make* You could have at least made the valid point that it has video output...

My basic problem with the air is that it has too many logistical requirements. If I want to sit in a hotel with ethernet only and send my pictures from my camera to somebody else, I am either required to do the tasks sequentially (which is not convenient) or carry around a usb hub. If you listen to a lot of people here, I am going to need to carry a power supply, Airport Express, usb hub, ethernet to USB adapter, mini-dvi to dvi and/or vga and an external superdrive in order to travel overnight. By this point I am carrying four lbs of equipment to give a 2 lb laptop the functionality of 3lb laptops from other companies. Apple just lost touch of what people realistically use in their quest for a thinner laptop. Hopefully the second generation is more logical.
