MBP is a joke, it need some major redesign....

are you serious? Just because it's an older design doesn't mean it needs a redesign. It's pretty perfect the way it is now. The only things that can really add to the design are a user replaceable hard disk and a magnetic latch.

it's not the platform, it's just the mobo

The Intel chipset in the Mac Book Cube Air supports both PATA and SATA.

Apple chose to put a PATA connector on the motherboard and use PATA drives. A minor change would be all that would be needed to use a SATA connector instead.

Agreed and this lets me know that you are one of the sane ones with a level head.

Anyone that says it needs a redesign is a lolly pop sucking consumer. UNLESS that is they KNOW that it needs a REFRESH to add some current tech and specs, like HDMI or display port, more FW800 ports, that magnetic latch and replaceable hard drive (two of them on the 17" Pleeeeeaasssee Apple!) and so forth.

I hope that posters get the idea that Apple is not going to cheapen the MBP by making it look like the Air and giving it those awful MacBook keys.

p.s. I love the MB keys, just not when I have to type for extended periods or when I put key covers over top of them, then it just SUCKS!

No Firewire, no purchase.
No true ethernet port, no purchase.
No video out, no purchase.
Just a single USB port, no purchase.

That easy to make it right!

Except that it does have video out, Micro-DVI.

Nice try!

Thanks for the info Aiden. Are you still using the reference to the MacBook Cube Air because you think the MBA has a limited sales appeal like the Cube or because you personally think the MBA is a dud?

I originally couldn't see the appeal of the Air, then I played with a friends for a few days. It is a lot different experience than you would think. I have a MacPro and I am wireless practically everywhere. The MBA was really nice as a carry everywhere, sit in front of the TV, general usage computer, as well as an excellent travel machine. My biggest problem with the Air is lack of performance, memory, and disk space. I need to be able to run VMWare with Vista or XP at windows based client shops. The current MBA just isn't up to snuff for this yet.

That is why I am hoping for either a MBA gen. 2 that is up to snuff or a smaller lighter redesigned MBP when intel releases the new Montevina platform. Hopefully by the end of the summer if I'm lucky.

the mac air is a nice machine, but it really is only for a tiny luxury market.
I have yet to see one in a public setting nor do i know anyone that has one.
I am a college professor and none of my students could afford one.....

I know a guy who bought 4 of them by mistake when he tried to place an order for 2 (one for him and one for his wife)...he did sell the spare two quickly though as it saved the new owners the shipping cost he paid.

Nice anecdote. It really shows that the Airbook is not a niche product.

The problem is, though: There are no shipping costs on items the price of the MBA.

Sorry, Skunk but them keys need a SERIOUS overhaul. The keyboard is the only one that hasn't been updated and the new design is *really* nice IMHO. In fact, the only thing I'm waiting to see in the "upcoming" upgrade is the keyboard update, aside from the logical/expected processor changes, etc.

With the price drop, however, the MBA is becoming more appealing. I have a nice MP at work and an MBA would simplify life in someways, because I simply couldn't expect to do the same things on my MBA as a MPB and would have to carry around a simpler system. I know that sounds crazy, but if I have two powerful machines it is sometimes hard to know where to keep what. I'm guessing very few people will understand what I'm talking about...

The pc world list with the air near the bottom is a joke, an so is pc world. It figures that they have hulu by murdoch in no. one, ass wipes...

Are you serious? Sorry, I have to disagree with you there. For a pro model, the MBP is built flimsy. Warping is a serious issue, especially for the 17" (the reason why they haven't put a magnetic latch on it).

I like the looks of my 1.67 PBG4 17", hey, it still looks new today (because they haven't changed the basic design in 6 years?), but for a PRO laptop, the MBP should be built more like my old T40 Thinkpad. That was a tank.

They had several Apple products ranked closer to the top, such as the iPhone at #2. If you're looking for bias, it isn't there.

...if you live/work in Japan with the USN there are...so many ***** companies won't ship to the military......way to support the troops...

Yes, that's not very nice of them. However, Apple seem to be one of the companies which ships to the military. In fact, they also seem to give the U.S. Army [Edit: US Navy too] a discount.

But you're saying some military friend of yours, stationed in Japan, bought one for himself, one for his gf (also in the military in Japan) and bought two extra, which he sold to two of his mates, also in the military, stationed in japan?

It still doesn't sound right.

And I should take your word for it, right? I don't care if the placed apple products high or not, I know how these clowns make such lists, by taking a little on the side so they can plug some murdoch venture like hulu whatever as no. 1 as if the whole f. world depended for it and waited for it...they are clowns, period.

I think the AIR is an awesome product, as I am typing this on 1 right now. It is my only MAC, my first. and I love it. It is the reason I came to MAC. I will buy other mac products now that I have had this product. I am in line for an iphone on the 11th, whereas before I would never get an iphone. so Apple has won me over with the MBA.

Edit:
and there is a micro DVI port.... and why does anyone need Ethernet anymore? what happened to wi-fi?

Because sometimes people want to do more with their network than browse the web at a cafe. If you're transferring an amount of data measured even in only 10s of megabytes, then there is an obvious difference between the fastest wifi and even old and slow 100Mb ethernet. Not to mention gigabit, which gives real life performance 3x higher again.

Wifi is slow, inconsistent, unreliable and insecure. The benefit you get for these downsides is convenience.

(OTOH, if Apple were really into endowing their users with more convenience, they'd release an MBP with a docking station...)

For me, if I was someone who did presentations all day, and moved about the campus or in out of buildings - this would be my choice. After all what looks better, someone walking in with a small portfolio, or someone with a large dumpy laptop bag or briefcase. Not to mention getting through security at a company or airport would be quicker (stick the air in a pocket of your portfolio, rather than having to deal with a laptop bag that must have every pocket checked and swabbed).

This is a false dichotomy. The choice is not between the MBA and "aircraft carrier" class 15" nontebooks. It's between the MBA and the only-slightly-larger MB, or PC "ultraportables" like Lenovo's X300. Heck, even a 15" MBP fits into the pockets on the back of economy airline seats or the front pocket of the average carry-on bag.

The MBA isn't _that_ much smaller than the alternatives. It's not like it's got the footprint of, say, an Eee.

My company's wireless access points are open and without passwords or any security.

They're also configured so that the only IP address that they can connect to is our corporate VPN server pool. When you get the wireless connection, you need to log in through the two-factor VPN authentication, otherwise you can't access anything.

Thus negating the only real advantage wifi has - convenience...

And a docking station !

I would also like to see a video out capable of supporting two external monitors.
