I'm OCD about stuff like this so I would complain loudly to Apple and then return it if they didn't do the right thing.

The Apple tax is a two way street. You want to charge 'a bit more' then you need to be forgiving about crap like this.

I'm serious about this kind of stuff. I'm going to be looking at this screen for a LONG time and it better well be damn perfect.

This is one reason I never buy mail order. My last two MBP were at BB and I had them open them up and I inspected them before I left the store.

If you can live with dead or stuck pixels, I give you credit because I believe most people will always notice them once they know they are there.

The last item I owned that had a stuck pixel was a Dell about 10 years ago. After that, I went on the offensive with stuff like this. I have found if you are polite but firm companies/stores will bend to you on this issue.

Since then, I have had many devices and they all go through my dead pixel testing before I leave with them. I also look for other issues as well (scratches, dings, etc...)

You may think I'm over cautious but I work hard for my money and I want to be happy with my purchases. Especially for the items I'm going to use the most (for work and play). In the end, I'm a happy customer with a perfect machine and they will get my business again.

And you post this here to make yourself look like what? A royal jerk? It worked. How can you possibly think that exchanging your machine and keeping the accessories and box is in any-way ethical, even if Apple agreed? Whatever happened to ethics and character? I bought a few accessories from a Best Buy not long ago, returned to my home 60 miles away to discover I wasn't charged for one item. I called the store, explained what happened, and offered to pay for the additional item. I asked if they could just charge my credit card for the additional amount. They didn't have a way to take my credit card over the phone, so I drove back to complete the transaction. You do this because of character. Just because you can get away with something, or figure out a way to game or beat the system, doesn't mean you should. Shame on you.

Greedy, self-centered consumers like you contribute to sky-high prices on products. Personally, I wish Apple would dramatically tighten its policies, stop accommodating ADD, whiny, perfectionists, and pass along the cost savings to the vast majority of reasonable buyers.

Are you for real?

But... those are all the things apples stands for... you need an ideapad i think

The reason people pay $2000+ for a laptop is that they are buying a PREMIUM product.

Premium products have the highest quality standards, and a stuck pixel isn't one of them. I had a MBP with a single stuck pixel, and tried to ignore it, thinking that exchanging the system was the "whinny" thing to do.

You know what? Apple came out with a better laptop a few months later, and I was stuck staring at the stuck pixel for several years until I bought a new MBP. Up until the last day of using the old computer, every time I would open a new text document or spread sheet, I would go "Oh yeah, there's that stuck pixel!" Had I exchanged it, I would have been a lot happier because the stuck pixel always reminded me that had I waited another few months, I would have gotten a significantly better computer for less money.

Moral of the story: You paid a lot for your gear, make sure you are happy with it. Apple isn't blessing you with the privilege of owning their products, you are blessing them with your money in today's tough computer market. Make sure it's right, and do the right thing by exchanging the item with all the old items in order.

Never owned a luxury watch or exotic sports car, I see. IMHO, most "premium" products have one thing that the mass-market doesn't: exclusivity. Generally, the most reliable and highest-quality products I've ever bought are the ones that have sold in the highest volume, not those that are the highest cost.

The niche, high-end, low-volume stuff (Ferraris, Hublot Watches, etc.) are anything but perfect and reliable. Now, this doesn't perfectly described Apple, but just because they charge twice what a comparable PC would cost really has little to do with the reliability and quality of the product.

to each his own...aren't we a little pietistical

i still dont know what to do...part of me wants to exchange it...but then im worried that i may end up with an even worse one...with a yellow tint or some other problem...more then one dead pixel...

took me 4 weeks to get this one! I really dont feel like waiting another month for a replacement....

The reseller that delivered mine to me today told me that apple has a big shortage of high res screens...And people ordering now will have to wait 6 weeks!!! (This is in Hong Kong where i live...Not sure about the situation elsewhere)

And to make matters worth i put on my Moshi palm guard before i noticed the dead pixel!!! So now if i return it i will have to buy a BRAND new moshi palm guard as they are not re-usable..

Sigh...whats should i do GRRR!!! :(

Wow. Are you serious?
I wasn't trying to "beat the system."
When I returned my MBP, the instructions on packaging strictly said: "Do NOT include the accessories." (I used mail-in, for I live no where near an Apple store.)
I also asked the applecare advisor if I SHOULD JUST LIVE WITH THE DUST. She told me that she would return it if she was in my shoes!
I would have happily kept the flaw if she had recommended it.
Whiney? No. Do you have a life? No.
If they had asked me to ship them back the accessories too, I would have gladly done so. It has nothing to do with character. It has everything to do with getting what you paid for.
I buy their stuff at a premium price, and I EXPECT a perfect machine, and nothing less.

GET A LIFE.

***UPDATE***

Ok after thinking it over i decided that you guys are right! I did invest over 2000 dollars of my HARD earned money into this computer, so it better be perfect.

As mentioned i live in Hong Kong...Here in hong kong we dont have actual APPLE stores...But apple does have an authorized service provider which luckily is about 5 mins by taxi from where i live...

Long story short, I went to the service center this morning...Showed the rep the dead pixel, and explained to her that i needed a replacement, or needed it fixed.

At first she tried to convince me that 1-3 dead pixels is not a big issue, and is generally considered "acceptable"...I stood my ground and stayed firm, but still polite.

I explained to her that I am a professional photographer, and i need a perfect screen. I also explained that i paid more money to upgrade my display to High res and expected a perfect display.

She went to the back room to talk with her manager, and when she came out she said that the manager had agreed to replace the display for me :D

She said i could take the laptop home with me and continue using it for the time being, as me being a photographer she understands that i need my laptop at all times.

She said that she will order a replacement display, and that it should arrive in 3-4 days (Probably this Thursday). Once it arrives they will call me, I then will bring my laptop in the morning, leave it there and pick it up the same day with a BRAND new display :D:D:D

Overall this is the best possible out come! I really did not want to have to exchange my laptop and wait 3-4 weeks for a new one...I also have installed my moshi palm guard, and spent hours installing software etc...So over all im happy that they will just be changing the display, and not the whole computer.

Thanks to everyone who told me NOT to settle...and get my moneys worth!!!

No Problem. :D

Don't let people say you are selfish, whiney, or have no character because you are trying to get the best for your buck. That is Apple's job. If people think it is "screwing over" the company by "beating the system," they can ask many of the unhappy customers who have been bent over backwards over an Apple Store counter. They are trying to MAKE AS MUCH MONEY AS POSSIBLE. If they can screw you over to get extra cash, THEY WILL. You are NOT costing them money for getting a replacement display. Have you seen how much profit they have been making these past few years??

Alex :apple:

I personally would return it, but that's just me. Also if you are with in your 14 day return period I do not see a problem. If they do not want to exchange it, just tell them you want to return it then. In a nice and tactful manner of course. More than likely they will exchange it, because they can either exchange it or lose $ 2000 - $2500 if you return it... for that price I do expect 0 dead pixels, like another poster has stated.

+1

So i finally got my High Res Glossy MBP after 4 weeks of waiting...Everything works fine...and NO yellow tint issue...

The only problem is 1 small dead pixel towards the bottom right of the screen...

Will apple do an exchange on CTO machines with only 1 dead pixel?

Is it even worth doing the exchange? After reading these forums i see that a lot of other users have been complaining about all types of problems...Yellow tint, wifi problems, over heating...etc

should I consider myself lucky? And just be happy that its only 1 small pixel?

Is it normal to have 1-2 dead pixels with apple displays? If i exchange could i end up getting one with more dead pixels?

Please someone give me some advice...

Thanks

a dead pixel is simply unacceptable, no matter what disclaimers makers of tv screens, computer monitors say about one ot two being acceptable. return the computer and demand a refund/replacement. heck apple have been replacing ipads for idiots using them as hammers and dropping them constantly or letting their kids crayon all over them.

I would absolutely try to take that thing back. I would not live with premium computer with a single faulty pixel...PERIOD. My new i7 MBP is flawless, try again and I bet you get what you want. I can sympathize for your frustration, I was worried the entire 3 weeks I was waiting for my machine to be delivered. At any rate, you should get what you pay for and that is a computer and display looks as good as the ones on display at the store.

They won't replace it for 1 dead pixel.

Sure they will, you may have to kick and scream a bit. I pay a premium for Apple's experience. And with that come higher expectation. When I can buy a PC with the same specs for $899 as the Apple that I spend $1499 on, I also expect service and quality commensurate with price. No, they shouldn't serve me Tea while I wait for the Genius Bar, but a dead pixel isn't my idea of a 100% functional macbook.

This.

I have a dead (black, not lit any color) pixel on my 15" high res and I'm perfectly happy. It's out of the way, and I'm not going to go through the hassle of getting a new machine shipped, and then reinstalling all of my programs and transferring files. Just my $.02

i received my new mbp 15 i7 anti-glare screen with one dead pixel, apple care were very helpful and apologetic. I'm in the process of exchanging my mbp...
