For those of you who didn't understand that the AppleInsider story was rumor wrapped in farce by the second sentence, please refrain from ever reading a NMR report. I'm sorry but the Gay Blade's wrtting could cause some serious injury your case. Wait till it gets to this site and has been properly edited for your consumption.

I have a hard time believing we will see so much new stuff at WWDC. Chips, displays, cams, software, etc, etc. it just doesn't ring true with what Apple has done in the past. It also doesn't make sense from a business stand point as well. Announcing all this at WWDC would be like a shotgun blast to the market. No one would be able to focus on a few items, the hub bub would rise for a few weeks and then die. Excitement drops, they (the market, Pceee users) forget Apple has great new stuff. Apple does seem to be taking a more slow release approach. Toss out a new item here, an other there and so on. Each on gets decent press, maybe some more than others, but the Apple brand name ends up in the news on a more consistant basis. This approach will help get people to switch, seems in line with what they have been doing and thus tends to make me believe the eWeek story more.

WWDC should be good but I am not looking for all this stuff there. I hope new 970, G5s whatever, will be announced. A few other smaller offerings would be great too and then dribble out the rest over July, August and Sept. Only downside is if you want a new system, wait until Sept. otherwise you could pay another $129 for Panther or someother fandango product that you just missed out on.

The writing wasn't even that bad. I've seen significantly worse sci-fi fanfic ("Space is empty. But not really empty. In fact, it's not very empty at all in certain places." Bleach. It read like the bastard child of the writings of Douglass Adams and Scott Adams). If it hadn't been for the smoking thing, it would almost be believable.

Too many rumors

I wish I could believe AppleInsider was onto something here, but it looks to me like they're on to a bit too much. New PowerBook specs, Power Mac G5s, new QuickTime streaming, P2P MPEG4 conferencing in iChat, a new video camera, a new office suite, reabsorbing FileMaker, adjustable Cinema Displays...

Don't get me wrong, I would love to see all that in a few weeks' time. But that's a pretty radical product shift to take in all at once. I doubt Steve could pull that off even if he wanted to (hope this last statement isn't heresy).

Could someone please tell me how it is possible that the G5 will be available immediately after being released at WWDC... yet no one has written in with a more detailed description... or a drawing of some kind?

Wouldn't people have seen them by now if they were all boxed up in some factory? Commercials and print ads made? Factory workers having assembled thousands of them... and on and on and on..

Yet still no artists rendering or even a detailed description?

I love how "Apple employees" so matter-of-factly talk about upcoming products in such an easily digestable manner...

convenient, no? it seems someone at appleinsider has taken a creative writing course.

Some people seem to think that the AI article doesn't describe a literal event and conversation.

Hmmm. That got me thinking. The Gay Blade's info on a new 64-bit super Project Builder mentions Apple employees wearing saffron robes and chanting while passing out snacks. What if THAT'S not literally tue either? My head is spinning!

Funniest thread ever, by the way. At midnight on the 23rd, someone should clip together all the choicest lines into a summary worthy of Sherlock.

Could be true

Yeaah... it could be true.

I heard about the iChat enabled camera from a guy from Apple I met at a bar (The Blue Chalk) in Palo Alto as well. He didn't know much more than that though, and I felt guilty about prying him for information.

You can bet that the new PowerBooks will be out at WWDC. Panther is for sure going to be introduced. As for the "G5" towers... who knows. IBM's been in production for a while. It's just a matter of time before Apple is going to release them. Releasing the "G5" does make some sense. And then panther in September. Get as much as a boost in processor speed because the normal Joe Idiot PC user out here still believes in > MHz is better.

As far as FileMaker coming back in house?? Perhaps. But that would add further credence to an "Office Suite." But if FileMaker is bleeding... then there will be Biiiiiig layoffs to get them in line.

What's with the pulled posts?

There was some really funny stuff in there (some intentionally funny, some not) and now it's been sanitized.

😕

Wouldn't it be nice if Apple jumped ahead of the curve by incorporating PCI-Express?

Should be hitting PCs in the 4Q.

ENOUGH!!!

I am swearing off M&Ms and Apple rumors until WWDC. A man can only take so much!

Well, maybe not the M&Ms...😉

When Apple release a new pb on the 23th (g4 or 970) and
for some reason they are not availible in store,do you think
the old one will be sold for a few days still?

Re: 1 Infinite Cantina

That has to be about the worst piece of fiction writing I ever allowed myself to read. Man, if you're going to write in a style at least verse yourself in the style! As the Apple Turns is a great example of a site with a well-maintained style. This reminds me of the drivel that passes for a movie review at Ain't It Cool News, although at least there the "personal tidbis" have some remote relationship to the overall review. Here, the style completely detracts from the story.

And what story is there (other than the idea that Apple programmers have an infinite knowledge of all aspects of the Apple business, and ogle at waitresses as a pasttime)? Scant repeats of previous rumors, lumped into stilted dialog.

IMHO, this is Page 2 material.

It does not violate Apple policy and let's face it, like it or not, Mac rumors sites, even this one needs to not get a cease and desist from Apple.

Arn you are GOD. Have Balls.

I agree. Apple would have no legal legs to stand on if someone posted here (and I am making this up) that MB had to pull the article about the 970 benchmarks or about the case design.

The original content disappearing is reasonable. But to expect everyone else to pretend it never existed is going well into censorship.

It's their site and they can censor anything they want. But it doesn't stop it from being censorship.

Just checking to see if I've been banned for my off topic posts last night... 🙂

edit...

no...but if u want to get banned, keep it up...

I spent some time this morning deleting your worthless posting in here... 🙄

"Yeah Carlose called me a couple of months ago. Apparently File Maker was bleeding money. They laid him off -- with a bunch of others -- before they began the move. They didn't even give him a damn severance package or nothing."

Having known some very recently laid-off Apple employees, I have a very hard time believing this. Apple's severance packages lately have been far above industry norm ...

I wish Apple would come out with tube socks.

(I don't know why I wrote that... I just felt compelled.)

Pull that Apple Legal!

More naff fiction..

(Scene: Mid 1990's.. The curtains part, and a stocky middle-aged walks into a smokey room, filled with the intoxicating smell of incense. He walks over to a table at the centre of the room where the medium sits, expectantly stroking her crystal ball...)

Amelio: Hi! I'm Gi..
Medium: I've been expecting you. You want to know where Apple will be in 10 years time, yes?

Amelio: Sure! Just need to know how many beige boxes we'll be cranking out then. Heheh.
Medium: Mmmm.... none, actually. But don't sweat it..

Amelio: But... Apple will still be in business, riiight?
Medium: Sure, the Microsoft investment sure helped there.

Amelio: Eh? You do know I'm the A.P.P.L.E guy..
Medium: Shhhh! Workstations. 64bit RISC workstations. Using IBM processors. Running a Unix OS. That's where Apple's money's at... but my French is a little shaky. Them and music players. Oh, and a music store.

Amelio: Music...store..? Wait a minute, is there a hidden camera? You guys!! Heheh.
Medium: No, it's all the truth. That's what Steve Jobs will announce.

Amelio: STEVE JOBS?? What's going to happen to Gil Amelio???
Medium:... Sorry, who the hell is Gil Amelio...?

<fade to black>

Seriously, I can't imagine what ANY Mac user from 10 years ago would have thought of Apple's upcoming product being a 64bit RISC Unix workstation. How the times have changed... 🙂

Mike.

we got it, all right -- it's just that it was excruciatingly belabored and badly written.

i thought appleinsider jumped the shark around the time its updates started occuring quarterly -- but it's entering macosrumors territory now. is ryan meader on their staff all of a sudden?

Weedish

How come you damn mods keep erasing my posts!

Just cause I was high when I wrote them. What If I had glocoma??

Anyway. was re reading the article this morning. when i read it last night it seemed like only a 15" bump but couldnt that who part about the powerbook(S)!! which had an s on it mean they all are speed bumped and not just the 15. the 15" hardware is a little older than the 12" and 17", as is the case design... Duh... so i think it means

new 12", 15" an 17" powerbooks withh faster G4 processors

15" casing/motherboard synced with 12 and 17 finally.

BOYAH! TEDDY RUPSKIN!

Genuine legal action by Apple has always, to my memory, targetted rumors that have turned out to be true. Of course, some rumor-mongers have faked Apple legal action in order to make their made-up stories seem more credible. Quite a bizarre community we're part of, aren't we?

Apple threats?

I agree on the censorship. I don't know what was deleted, but discussing WHAT was pulled by Apple Legal on other sites should be fair game. Those sites still exist after pulling the stories... you'd think a site that simply contained a forum posting would be even safer. Just pull the content IF asked (even ban the user if it violates the forum service agreement) but the site goes on.

Besides, its the person who violated the NDA that stands to get in trouble--people can repeat what they heard all they want, it's just free speech. I suport Apple's right to protect their secrets, but I just don't think the law is with them any further than the NDA itself.

Yet MacRumors posted a very specific warning that this site would be endangered by such posts. So I suspect MacRumors has ALREADY received threats in ADVANCE about that from Apple Legal--specific and very serious ones, perhaps along with threats not to reveal the threats?

If so, Apple is almost certainly legally in the wrong, but knows they can bully a tiny site without haing to worry about what's legal. They have the money for the lawyers.

Now... if this speculation gets deleted, we can be VERY suspicious.

Lastly, just to stir things up for no good reason... it's always possible that a site PRETENDS to have things pulled by Apple Legal, just as a publicity stunt. I'm just pointing out the possibility--not the likelihood. Stranger things have happened.

(What was the nature of the posts that were deleted here? I thought the conversation was pretty funny. Not always highly productive, but then this IS discussion of rumors and fiction!)

i dunno, drunk peep from where im from dont usually talk with such clarity, and then switch to chaotic speech that quickly

I dunno, this is a funny thread that can't quite figure out what it's about...censorship, rumors or tube socks.

Still no M&Ms, 2 hours and counting; only approx 288 hrs to WWDC!
