Got my base 1.1 2 days ago.

I noticed UI lag immediately (not terrible, but enough to make you see dropped frames in animations), clean installing from internet recovery to 10.10.3 did not improve things, neither did 10.10.4 beta 3 or 4. I also setup as a new mac and did not transfer settings.

The only thing that has worked for the UI lag issue is reducing transparency.

From the numerous forums I've scanned, it appears many retina macbook owners, including 2015 pro models, suffer from the UI lag issue on Yosemite.

I do not think it is rMB hardware related, rather, an Intel and Apple driver issue.

Loving my new rMB. Best laptop I've ever used.

Let's hope Apple sort this out, as it ruins an otherwise sublime experience.

I tend to agree on all your points, based on my experience with 3 different retina MacBooks running clean installs of 10.10.3 and the various betas of 10.10.4, as well as my testing the latest MacBook Pro 13". I probably should have kept the MBP for a couple more weeks to really see how the UI lag compared to the rMB, but I got tired of testing things out.

Does anyone have any idea on the release for the final non beta 10.4.4 version?

Thanks - thought that too. Will sit it out, not having any lag issues but if there's an improvement, great!

Seems like that would be an insignificant announcement.

You don't have to wait … anyone can join the beta program.

For those with sluggish and laggy UI (even with turning transparency off), I came across the following thread today and this worked for me, however, as usual, YMMV.

This worked for me - was ready to give my machine back until trying this little trick this afternoon.

Definitely an OSX software issue.

https://david.gyttja.com/2013/01/21/fix-lagging-display-performance-on-retina-macbook-pro/

-Delete /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist
-Delete ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.windowserver*.plist
-Shutdown OSX
-Startup, immediately press and hold the P and R keys while holding down the option (⌥) and command (⌘) keys before the gray boot screen appears, which resets the PRAM
-You may have to reset your display preferences (resolution) once you login
Done!

This made my macbook feel just like my rMBP did on Mavericks, "buttery smooth". (I'm beginning to hate this term, but it is what it is.)

Will see how long it lasts and report back.

I don't recommend anyone delete system files. I've been killed by the "I found this" posts.

Get the beta instead

I'm on 10.10.4 beta 4.

As I said, YMMV, however this worked for me, and if you read the linked thread, you will see an overwhelming majority of people for whom this solution has solved Yosemite UI lag.

If it makes anyone uncomfortable, then best they don't try this.

I believe this saved my butt today, but for a slightly different reason: I noticed my rMB was acting a little flakey upon waking from sleep or from startup (serious mouse scrolling delays for the first few seconds, other hiccups), and once I did this, it seemed to remedy. Even my repairing permissions with my favorite maintenance app Cocktail didn't help.

Good tip.

I had the lag issue and tried the simple PRAM reset and it worked wonders. The downside was that a lot of the system settings that I had created were all reset, but my rMB is just 48 hours old, so nothing major.

Great stuff !

And my iStat menus was showing wildly fluctuating battery remaining info before running this. Now it is accurate.

Don't why, but my macbook clearly needed this from day zero.

Feels like it should now. Pretty much smooth sailing.

What settings specifically, so that I know what to look for if I proceed?

For me my force click needed to be disabled and re-enabled to work again, and my display preferences had been reset to "default for display" from the "more spaced" scaled setting.

That was all.

I just installed the last 10.10.4 beta, and oh boy, it's day and night. No more lag. Even with transparency.
I was complaining that this computer was laggy and wanted to return it but this update is GREAT!

I installed the 10.10.4 beta since the first day it was available, both on my iMac early 2009 and MacBook 2015, and I like that it's a lot more stable on my iMac early 2009, but for some reason, when typing (whether it be in Pages, Safari, or most other applications of that nature) it freezes up the system and shows the spinning beach ball of death. I really hope that Apple obviously fixes this, as it's not something fun to deal with on my new baby! haha

nothing like that happening here (or, it seems, for most others). re-install the beta? just a thought...

Those are just .plist files, preferences. They rebuild upon reboot if the system doesn't see them.

I want to make sure I am deleting the correct files...

The first one seems straight forward: Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences etc.

The second one however is accessed through Finder-Go to Folder, correct? But it is auto-filling the rest of the file name starting with 64F7A667. When I proceed to the folder, I noticed there is a similarly named com.apple.windowserver plist file only this one starts with a 176DCB30. Which one of these should be deleted?

I spoke with Apple level 2 support and had them guide me through a variation on this process because I decided to avoid the risk of deleting the wrong file or inflicting any kind of unintentional damage.

They had me delete both of the regular .plist files but refrained from deleting the ByHost files because they were not sure what they were and advised against deletion of hidden files. Not to say that some here aren't more proficient than that rep and can handle these kinds of modifications. FYI They also said that a PRAM reset would unlikely yield any fix to our problems as it does not have to do with speakers or screen, but I have already done one of those resets to troubleshoot a separate issue.

Animation has improved; it is only a matter of how much time it lasts this time.
