Slow down with 10.2.5

I ran Xbench before and after updating from 10.2.4 to 10.2.5. I updated prebinding before running the first tests, and restarted as well. I restarted after updating (a second restart after the required one).

I have a G3 iMac, 500MHz, 640MB RAM, and numerous background processes that I didn't bother to quite (e.g. Snard, Searchling, YoupiKey, etc.)

A few of the numbers...
Code:
               Before / After
Overall 41.51 / 41.58
Quartz Graphics 51.14 / 51.36
User Interface 45.08 / 44.03
Disk Test 40.79 / 42.46
Conclusion: It didn't do a heck of a lot performance-wise, technically. Still, it feels a bit snappier, but that's probably effects of the reboot and prebinding.

I had all kinds of problems after installing 10.2.5. After multiple sessions with Disk Doctor, Disk Warrior, Jaguar Cleaner, First Aid I can finally run over night without a crash of eith the system or an application.

So today I thought I would run Xbench and see where the performance is before and after. Here are a few of the numbers from on my Quicksilver

........................ 10.2.4 / 10.2.5
Results ..............84.77 / 63.81
cpu.....................94.23 / 57.96
quartz................99.23 / 72.12
open gl.............106.44 / 64.82
user interface.....94.64 / 50.96

The slow user infterface seems to explain the dog slow, jerky dock performance.

How does this compare?

  • Do a fresh install of 10.2 using the archive install feature then run software update and run all the updaters.

This should fix all your probelems.

Also get rid of Norton Utilities. It will cause more problems then it will fix in OSX.

"You have inserted a disk that contains no

(ignore button) (eject button)

followed by a nice crash of disk copy...

1st gen 17' iMac 800 mhz 768 megs ram

Anyone else having this problem?

We're having the same problem with our Powermac G4. I can't do a clean install from my Jaguar disk - cos it won't read it. When I installed 10.2.5 it STOLE!! my iCal. I'm having Airport connectivity problems. Gettting odd problem messages. And unfortunately I only know the extreme basics of using computers.

I've never had such problems - OS9 was wonderful - I see that now. I am relieved that I am not the only one with these problems. Misery likes company.

And how sad that my first post here is a whinge!!

:D <<-- big optimistcal smile.

To do a fresh install off the 10.2 disc either insert the disc at the login screen or insert the disc when in the finder and click the ignore button. Then chose restart and hold the C-Key down during start up. This will boot the computer off the 10.2 disc. Chose the archive installation option. After it's done run software update and install all the updates. You will then have to restart and you will want to run software update again to get the rest of the updates. This should fix all of your problems.

Oh dear I'm rapidly losing faith.

it s not worth loosing the faith, you ll get it, i m sure. :) ( crossing my fingers )

Grrrrrr disks n stuff

Well, it wouldn't boot from the disk. wouldn't even acknowledge it. My other half did a full disk repair from his powerbook via firewire -- no joy.

We've ordered an external cd drive. I'm hoping it's just that the drive has gone. It is 3 yr old almost. People keep reminding me that Mac's aren't indestructable - and I want to know WHY!!!

lol - i shall return if the new drive doesn't work.

Thanks for all the support peeps xxxxxxx

I've never had a CD drive fail. You know you could always start your computer up as the Target disk using Target disk mode then reinstall OSX from the other computer.
