It feels slower to be brutally honest.
Oh God I take that back, its much faster, I guess when you update it runs a load of scripts etc. which slows it down, now I've restarted etc. apps are loading instantly.

How could I ever doubt you Steve.

I think I know what happened... heh.

I was still using the CoreUI hack to make my menu bars more transparent. Now nothing will run! Hah! I guess I'll just have to wait until I can get home and do a restore.

I spoke to soon

Seems to fix the weird expose and spaces issues with MS Office Products.

Less "fixes", more "changes" spaces and expose issues with MS Office products. Expose is working, but Spaces goes completely nut-so with formatting palettes. It is actually worse than before.

people calm down. there is no noticeable difference. its all background updates nothing thats going to make you mac go 10x faster or make safari 'snappier' what ever that means. its a good solid update that wont bust your mac but wont change your life either.
Dude, we all know that. The whole "is Safari Snappier" thing is a joke.

In all of that text, you still have not provided a reason for repairing permissions.

You also aren't getting anything "more" out of the combo update.

A reason not to? It's a waste of time. Repair permissions is a troubleshooting tool and yet is not even mentioned in the 10.5.3 troubleshooting documents.

As for Pro Tools, usually people who use third party pro apps should not be updating a point release until given the go from that third party. Often Digidesign has to release a patch to even be compatible anyway.

Again, repairing permissions, and downloading an update outside of what Software Update recommends is not recommended.

Not recommended by you...it is by others. What are your credentials so that I can decide whether I should give your opinion on this any more weight in this topic than others'?

Apple's Mac OS X 10.5.3 Combo Update web page specifically says:

"About Mac OS X 10.5.3 Combo Update
The 10.5.3 Update is recommended for all users running Mac OS X Leopard and includes general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility and security of your Mac. "

Hmmm...that doesn't say NOT recommended, and doesn't refer you to anything that suggests you're better off going the Software Update method.

You seem kind of defensive about this now; not trying to ruffle your feathers, just disagreeing with you. It's not a waste of time if it's all being done in the background anyways.

I wasn't addressing verifying permissions, but I'll disagree with you on that anyways. Not something I usually do, but I wouldn't go so far as to say, NOT recommended, as you do. Other than taking a few extra minutes of your precious time, what's the harm in ensuring you have a nice clean system before applying updates? And it might help something out. Seems to be one of the first things anyone suggests you do, including Apple Tech Support and Apple Geniuses, if you have any kind of problems on your machine. So again, what's the harm? And why are you so adamant against it?

As a recent switcher from windows xp I must say I am impressed! :Ddownload enter your password and it's installed all in less than half an hour with no problems so far! unlike xp sp3

I went from 16.6GB space left on my MacBook Air to 17GB space!!! Taste great- Less Filling!!

Maybe because the update you got was 420MB, so when you were about to install, you had 16.6GB left, but once installed the update installer gets deleted, so you end up with 17GB space again.

VMWare Fusion 1.1 now broken

I run a bootcamp partition of Windows XP SP3 using VMWare Fusion 1.1.

After the 10.5.3 update, Windows running in Fusion no longer accepts any keyboard input. I can't even log into Windows now. Either the Mac beeps at me (as if I were trying to click outside a modal dialog) or it just ignores key presses altogether when I try to type in my login password in Windows.

I may have to install Fusion 2 beta or reinstall my copy of Parallels 3 and try that.

Plus, Apple's info page on the update says this:

Standalone installer

Download the update installer and run it manually. This is a useful option when you need to update multiple computers but only want to download the update once. These versions of the standalone installers are available from Apple Downloads.

The Mac OS X 10.5.3 Update is recommended for all versions of Mac OS X 10.5 through 10.5.2.

* The delta update lets you update from Mac OS X 10.5.2 to 10.5.3
* The combo update lets you update from Mac OS X 10.5, 10.5.1, or 10.5.2 to 10.5.3

I get the combo because I have over half a dozen computers to upgrade. I take this, throw it on an external, and can get it done quickly. Plus I have it for times when I do an erase and install...I have the combo update handy to speed things up.

All true - I've got close to 20 and just started using ARD from our XServe to push out updates. It's dreamy, and definitely well within the "recommended" parameters from Apple.
