Mac OS X 10.5.3: sync Google Contacts

We're happy to tell you that starting today, it's easier to sync up your contact lists. The Address Book application in Mac OS X 10.5.3 now lets iPhone users sync their Address Book with Google Contacts. To try it, go to the Address Book menu, choose Preferences, and then check Synchronize with Google. It'll ask for your Google account and password, then automatically update your contacts every time you sync your iPhone.

I am not an iphone user, but would love to be able to sync address book with google contacts. Why can't I?!?!?!

can someone tell me what the difference between getting the update via software updates and the combo updater acutally is? also.....im trying to read thru all these post while at work, so i apologize if this was addressed in a page i missed, but has anyone figured out why some are getting different size update files?

Software update will only give you what you need. So if you have 10.5.2, you'll get the delta update, which will only update from 10.5.2. The combo update will update from 10.5.0, 10.5.1, or 10.5.2. You could also download just the delta update from Apple's site, rather than use Software Update.

I don't like using Software Update for large things like this, personally. In the case of system updates, though, I always grab the combo updater for previously-state reasons.

Took less than a minute to download :D - helps when your ISP is a supercomputing center!

FYI: After installation, system went through a "2 chime" restart - so be a bit patient and don't panic if you see a black screen for some seconds after the first restart

Noticed that the dock is snappier.
Another thing - checked airport and attempted to connect to the network of a nearby cafe that I frequent (the password for this network is already stored in my keychain). But now I noted the password dialogue box popup and requested a "64 character hexadecimal" wpa2 password - strange

update: tried connecting to the cafe network again - this time it connected using info from my keychain

I see a "Synchronize with Google" in the General tab of Address Book's Preferences. Shouldn't that work?

I have a running VMWare Fusion 1.1.2 instance usning Windows XP SP3 and have had no issues with keyboard input or anything else in Fusion. All of the Fusion drivers still appear to work correctly.

I finally got it to work, but not sure why. However, it still isn't the same as before. It used to be if I was using my Windows desktop in Fusion Full Screen Windows mode, I could use the keyboard to switch to another space (Ctrl-1, Ctrl-Arrow for example). Now that doesn't work unless I mouse up to show the menubar first. :( In any case, it's not the same as before.

Combo updater

The Combo updater is an update file that contains ALL of the product updates up to and including the current update.. just in case there was any corruption or whatever. I always load Combo updates on major releases and it has worked out well for me.:D

Doe anyone have a link to the latest combo download?

I'm running Fusion 2.0b1 and Vista SP1 and have no problems getting into my Boot Camp partition.

Wow - I hope not. I've become completely accustomed to it not working reliably since the beginning of the year. It would suddenly be way too much of a change for it to actually work as intended. :D

Yeah, I mean, that'd be almost as crazy as mail actually hiding on start-up when you say it should...

:D

"About Mac OS X 10.5.3 Combo Update
The 10.5.3 Update is recommended for all users running Mac OS X Leopard and includes general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility and security of your Mac. "

Hmmm...that doesn't say NOT recommended, and doesn't refer you to anything that suggests you're better off going the Software Update method.

The combo update is specifically designed for updating for more than 1 version, i.e 10.5.1 to 10.5.3. Software update on the other hand will install the correct version for your machine. This is shown by the fact that some users have a 420MB update and some have a 198MB update.

Always use software update otherwise you could potentially be downloading updates that are unnecessary for your machine and thus wastes bandwidth. There is no reason not to use software update that I can think of (with perhaps the exception of downloading the combo update to install on multiple machines that you have on a small network without an OS X Server).

For those asking, I have the Google Sync option in Address Book, but I don't have an iPhone. I do, however, have an iPod touch, so that may make the difference.

It appears that if you do not have an iPhone or iPod touch syncing with your Mac, the Google Sync option does not show up.

Is it just me or time machine is broken? It's stuck on preparing backup. Please don't be a serious problem... :(

Edit: Apparently it's now backing up 3.4GB for some reason I'm not aware of.

Except its not. Those boxes have the updates turned off so they won't be able to install 10.5.3

They can't with software update, but they can download and run the updater manually. I'd be curious to hear what happens...but with so few of those boxes in the field, we may not hear anything.

Can we stop doing repair permissions people? There is no reason to do so prior to a point release.

Also, just use software update to tell you what update you need. There is no reason to download a combo.

I agree that it's silly to repair permissions when you don't have a problem, but many mac users have reported better results from combo upgrades than from incremental upgrades. People who use software upgrade will get a particular issue while those who used combo updater don't.

As for Pro Tools, usually people who use third party pro apps should not be updating a point release until given the go from that third party. Often Digidesign has to release a patch to even be compatible anyway.

Even when they bless a system version and release app updates, people sometimes still see better results using the combo updater.

Again, repairing permissions, and downloading an update outside of what Software Update recommends is not recommended.

Recommended by who? Apple? You?

I'd love to see someone take two identical machines and apply incremental upgrades to one and combo to the other and check for differences. I'd be shocked if both machines had identical system folders (beyond receipts and logs, which would obviously be different).

420MB for my Hackintosh.

I'll wait to make sure it's not breaking other people's installs before I run it. :)
