They released it with the new Beta 6 of the iPhone SDK and OS

Before installing and developing with the sixth beta versions of the iPhone OS and SDK, you must first upgrade your Mac system to Mac OS X v10.5.3. To upgrade your Mac, go to System Preferences and select Software Update to install the latest version.
App IDs are a new requirement in provisioning profiles for iPhone OS beta 6. To continue developing, Team Admins will need to create App IDs and regenerate all provisioning profiles. Previously generated provisioning profiles will not work with iPhone OS beta 6.

That's simply not true. There are cases where apps haven't run properly and the problem is solved by repairing permissions.

I do agree that it's pointless to repair when you have no problems, but that doesn't mean you should never repair permissions.

I was referring to repairing prior to an update so, yes it is true.

As a troubleshooting method as you describe I agree with you completely that in some cases repairing can solve problems with applications after you notice issues, but again I stress, that this is a subject for troubleshooting an existing issue.

BUGS BUGS and MORE BUGS

Well, two quick bugs:

Even after a repair permissions, these still happen:

1) Keyboard Apple+Q no longer quits fusion for me. I have to manually go up and choose file - quit.

2) With a hard drive folder in the right hand corner of the dock, one of the OS X "invisible" files is appearing. mach_kernel.cftsys

3) Civ IV when set to open in another space... upon launching the program... NOW launches in the correct space, but you aren't "moved" to that space automatically.

4) Adium has stopped showing my contacts list. WTF???

Nice Apple.

:apple:I'm new to the MAC world! Bought Mac Book Pro, 2GB Ram 250 g HDD, updated to 4GB Ram. Noticed some problems with Airport, hope this update will fix it.:D

strangely, I don't feel my usual compulsion to install this one right away. I'm so happy with the way my system is running I don't really want to tempt fate...

Just got the update on my BlackBook SR, 2 whole hrs left on a 8MB DSL connection. Me thinks its time to get a cold one...hopefully its worth the wait

To give a concrete example, have any of your tried installing an update to Adobe Flash Player recently? Look at the mess the Flash installer leaves behind when repairing permissions and tell me that repairing permissions is never needed.

However, just because a file’s current permissions differ from its original permissions as specified in the corresponding BOM file, does not mean that the current permissions are “wrong”.

Something to think about

That worked! I wonder, though, if it will cause any problems next time I plug in an iPod. Still, a very simple fix. :)

Well, ok, it didn't, really. I got it set up, but it didn't actually sync the contacts. I suspect you have to actually plug in the iPhone or iPod Touch. So, doesn't really help any. Bummer.

anyone else now having problems backing up wirelessly to an AEBS hard drive? I'm getting "backup failed: cannot mount drive" errors even though my TM drive is mounted....

Damn. Oh well. :( It'd really be nice if synch'ing worked without the device. Argh.

Nice Apple.

anyone else can they confirm this?

well on my iMac 10.5.2 the update to .3 was 198Mb (3 minute download)
And it has made Time Machine go loopy. Even after it completed the mother of all backups (which took about an hour) it took a break of about 45 minutes then kicked off again - no backup icon flashing in the status bar thing for time machine so .. I dunno.. reindexing and stuff on my firewire hard drive and it has been for AGES. Little blighter is going to be burnt out before it finishes at this rate :-/ I hope its ok. I guess I go for sleep now and hope its sorted itself by the morning!

and it literally just finished.. so that was about 1.5 hours of accessing it :(
its nuts I tells ya.

Patterns Compiler Process?

After updating a PowerMac G4 to 10.5.3, I noticed some heavy CPU usage and found a process called "PatternsCompiler" working away. backupd, dotmacclient, and syncserver were, as expected, going nuts as well.

Is this something new or has it been there all along?

Yeah, I got my hopes up. It really makes no sense that this feature is tied to the iPhone/iPod Touch at all. I'd love to be able to sync my contacts with Gmail. Oh well. Maybe next update.

Downloaded at 1.5mb/s average

Unfortunately the only difference I have found is that my Adium translucent message windows look solid :(

My experience

(Installed Combo update - I have multiple machines and only wanted to download it once).

2 Reboots

Spotlight Reindexes (so slow while that happens)

-Problem - 6 .Mac Sync conflicts and had to sync again

No Dashboard movement (everything still in the same place)

Spaces settings untouched

+Photoshop tool pallet seems to be fixed (not staying gray or blank)

Permission repair went fine

For all those snappy freaks: sure why not seems snappy

-Spaces/Expose still has a problem with certain notification windows that disappear. After the combo update I noticed a camera RAW update in software update. After running it there is a notification window that says “The updates were installed successfully.” This window when switching spaces than switching back disappears sometimes and when using expose for all windows always disappears.

-Time Machine when connected (ethernet) to Time Capsule prepares to backup but stays at 0 KB backed up. I restarted the computer and tried again. It took a long time to get going but it finally did and have done 3 backups since then and have recovered a file also.

+Expose and Spaces seems also much improved with Final Cut Pro

-Networking speed with an iMac that still has 10.5.2 is way way slow (gigabit ethernet) - restart of the iMac fixed it.

Some bugs or bad features still:

Spotlight in a finder window defaults back to whole computer instead of the directory I have navigated to.

In column view and then spotlight in the window then hit back button it switches to list view instead of column view like I had it.

Mail attachments when I save don’t show up in the save like the used to in Tiger. Attachments get dropped even though the check mark is on to keep them.

In icon view shift clicking does not select a range but acts like command clicking does.

Feature Request - Editing event in iCal without having to double click on it then click edit then click what to edit. Bring back the side panel!!!

VMWare Fusion seems fine version 1.1.1 and XP SP2 (unless SP3 installed without me knowing about it).

People saying it’s slower is Spotlight still indexing? Let it finish, maybe do a reboot and check again.
