As of 10.5.5 the only impacted chipsets are the Intel graphics adapters (X3100, and possibly the 950). The new MacBook has the 9400M which is a derivative of the 8600/8800 NVIDIA designs - the 10.5.5 driver for those has restored 256 color support.

We have a Diablo II patch in testing which can resolve this issue on the Intel chipsets, but I do not have an ETA for the release.

Good to know, and thanks for the heads-up about the patch! Looking forward to getting it; I'm very glad that Blizzard is taking an active interest in this issue. More developers need to learn from this example, and that's the plain truth.

Though I agree with you, it has been quite a while since 10.5.5 came out. I'm sure the fix takes a lot of work, but this is an issue that prevents people from playing the game and I'd expect faster results.

Just to bump the thread, I'm on a MacBook OS X version 10.5.5 and just installed Diablo 2 with the LoD expansion. Everytime I try to start up the game it immediatley quits "unexpectedly." I'm not sure if this was mention already because I don't really know what video card I have.

I guess I have the standard/default video card that came with regular white MacBooks.

There was something earlier in this thread about a 256color mod, would that be a mod to remove that limitation? I'm running D2 on tiger with 1st gen. MBP.

roacch, you have a GMA X3100 (You can find it in the system profiler). You'll need to have 10.5.4 or EARLIER to be able to run diablo right now. If you don't have a backup to restore your computer to, or it came with 10.5.5, then you're out of luck. Otherwise, theres another thread that tells you exactly how to do it.

Time is ticking...

We have a D2 patch in process that can work as SC 1.15.3 now does (whether drivers have 256 color mode or not), but I don't have an ETA for it.

To confirm, this should still only be an issue for Diablo II on X3100 video. Correct?

Well, it's been months now that we have this issue with D2 & LOD - and already 2month+ since everyone with 10.5.5 is p**sed... Still no ETA available?
I will think twice whether I should buy D3 if the support is that... performant. The money is all yours and the game not working all mine? Bad exchange.

Sorry you are unhappy about the situation - so are we.

If you want a short term resolution, the best thing to do would be to archive & install back to an earlier version of OS X. For a longer term solution we will offer an update to Diablo II after it has completed internal testing and been converted into a patch.

Let's keep in mind that this was an Apple driver change that broke the game (by removing 256 color support from affected chipsets).

While I'm as anxious as the next person, the fact that Blizzard is supporting a seven year old game still is impressive. They can't plan for every contingency (like Apple changing drivers mid-stream), but at least they're making the effort. Think of how many other games have their servers taken offline six months after launch...and then realize that you can still play on BattleNet even years after Diablo II's launch.

The patch gets here when it gets here; like I said, I'm just glad they're making the effort!

I agree...the fact that they are even CONSIDERING putting out a patch like this for a 7+ year old game is amazing. While I am anxious for it to appear, I can wait for it.

And I am anxiously awaiting D3!!!

I didn't mean to critizise you personally, sorry!
I've done the downgrading, D2 is working. I just used a wrong archive - and deleted the whole backup disk - it was running out of space. So I successfully deleted 2 weeks of mail and work, which wouldn't have happen if... ah, well.
This was the reason of my freakin' out... sorry again.

We are posting a beta of Diablo II on macgamefiles.com today which works on X3100 graphics and all Leopard versions. However it is beta and does not have battle.net capability, that will follow in an upcoming patch.

Many thx for the beta!

Just got the game started with my GMA X3100 - MacBook.
It works great and made my :apple: a better friend 4 me.

1000 thanks:):):)

Beta Patch

We are posting a beta of Diablo II on macgamefiles.com today which works on X3100 graphics and all Leopard versions. However it is beta and does not have battle.net capability, that will follow in an upcoming patch.

Thanks a lot for posting the Beta!
I've tested the patch with D2 and LOD - both works fine for me. If I find any bug, I'll let you know.

What am I doing wrong?

I downloaded the Beta and followed the directions. When I try to open the game I get the Diablo II options screen and after clicking ok all I get is a black screen with my mouse on it. Have I done something wrong? Thanks!

You have to change the graphic-mode. From "Thousand" to "Million" Colors. Then it should work :)

Okay so that patch works for single player but when can we expect blizzard to come out with this for multiplayer?

Anybody knows anything exactly about how far they are with the patch? Is there maybe a thread in the official blizzard-forums? If so, please link it here.

Yup. There are great news everybody. There are really working on it. But before that, they will have to do a little "brain storming". So everybody is called, to post their suggestions on the battle.net forums.

Blizzard rocks, but I have to say something here...

I find it bad, just really bad that Diablo 2 has been broken for almost a year by Apple and we have rely on Blizzard for a patch. I applaud them for putting out the beta and a final patch soon.

Games are big business and a growing business. Would it kill Apple to support game developers a little more and get some more games made for the Mac? It shouldn't be too hard now that they all have Intel processors and somewhat decent graphics. I guess the X3100 is the last of the last of the poor GPU's. It's good to see Apple moving to the 9400M and GT M, but still, this is why people still use Windows or dual boot Macs just to use Windows.

Hi Rob --

Hoping not to bother you too much, but do you know if there is a status regarding the official patch for this? Are we going to have to wait for 1.13 or will this possibly show up before then?

Thanks!
