Fan and Heat Issues?

Is anyone else noticing increased fan activity and surface heat issues after 10.5.6?

I've heard a lot more fan noise and think I'm feeling lot more heat on the surface (over the speakers on either side of the keyboard). I've seen a couple of other posts along this line but am curious if MacRumors readers have seen the same thing and tried any fixes. One post points to this Apple support page on resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) on Intel based Macs:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543

I'm not sure slowing the fans is the answer, as they are, you know, reducing heat. Perhaps the SMC reset will reduce the heat as well.

Are other seeing this issue?
Did SMC reset or another fix resolve it?
Is anyone aware of any risks or downsides to SMC reset?

Thanks.

10.5.6 Installed with no immediate issues.

Hi,
Just to help those contemplating installation of 10.5.6 and worried about "bricking" their machine, I have just installed the update (having deleted the previously downloaded update from /Library/Updates just to be sure, and it has worked fine with no major delays during startup.

I have yet to discover any issues with the rest of the software stack but mail appears to be working as does Safari.

I hope this helps to establish some confidence in this update now that Apple have fixed the main incomplete update issue.
Cheers,
Craig.

Just a heads up

An update for those that have gotten the update. You may need to check Keychain, and some sites/programs. Today I had an issue with iDisk and backing up. I had to reset the password for Mobile me and Mac mail, and other Apple related sites. I went round and round with a Mobile Me techie n a chat, to get to that point, works right now. just a heads up. ;)

networking error.

i realize i have a slow internet connection, and i keep getting a networking error when i get about a 1/4 of the way through the update. been trying for months, and i don't get out much to give it a speedy connection. wondering if i really need this update until i get home next august, or if it's a really good chess update and i should get out more with my computer.

EDIT: Sorry about the double post. I blame the connection and my stupidity. and its actually a combined update of 675 megabytes and 363 hours left.

EDIT EDIT: Sorry about editing so much. Here's the specific message:

The update “Mac OS X Update Combined” can’t be saved.
A networking error has occurred: timed out (-1001). Make sure you can connect to the Internet, then try again.

And I'm definitely connected to the net.

@jakdominance

What type of Internet Provider do you have? Dial up?

If so, yes you might get an network error. I did if I went after big downloads when I was with Juno.

After the update, the FlatOut 2 demo now hangs while loading stages, if Post-Processing is checked in the pre-game configuration window.

I don't know, sorry, I'm living with a host family in a foreign country. All I know is it's slow and annoying at times. Thanks, :)

Time Machine perpetually Preparing finally fixed...

Installed it on my AL iMac 2Ghz. My Time Machine is now completely borked. It has been "preparing back up" for over an hour. I have rebooted twice and still get the same problem with Time Machine.

I think Apple screwed the pooch with this update.

It turns out that my version of this problem actually pre-dated 10.5.6 (my last backup was 12/12). Anyway, I finally got Time Machine running again.

The last entry details what worked for me:
https://forums.macrumors.com/archive/index.php/t-438148.html

Once I got through all of that it backed up about 5G immediately and then another 2G after that. Now it's running fine.

There was clearly an issue with the permissions of the /.Spotlight file. I couldn't "Get Info" on it -- but i could delete the whole thing.

I'm not an expert by any means but this did work for me. And, while it's in this thread, this Time Machine problem probably wasn't specific to 10.5.6. A friend that is having the same problem confirmed he's still on 10.5.5.

Fix for calculator in Spotlight

This might have been mentioned before, but I think Onyx has a fix for the calculator issue in Spotlight... Take a look at this picture and give it a shot. Hope it helps.

Since the update I get a corrupted looking folder icon for a second while it is dropped. I don't use animate snap to grid. When moving files/folders on the desktop everything is fine. Anyone know how to fix this? Is it a graphics card issue or some messed up preference file?. I'm on a late 2007 MBP; does anyone else have this problem?

ok, I updated the family iMac which also did not use animate snap to grid. Same thing is occurring in the finder. Not a big issue, and don't mind switching back to the animate snap to grid, but still... it is a mishap.
