I don't see a use case for an iPad anymore. I can get a laptop's functionality in a device nearly the same size.

For the most part, that is the way I've seen it, but now I need to test apps side-by-side. That, plus enough screen space to see a lot of debugging info is why I'm all of a sudden hoping for a 10.5" soon. Hadn't considered an iPad ever before this edge case!

I hate those shamfered edges! Apple is using the same ipad design, since the first gen iPad Mini from 2012. I wish they changed the form factor this time...

You're referring to the "sharp" edging on the sides @ the top, right?

Not a fan of those either. The Silicon Case from Apple, tho pricey has been great in the sense that it gets rid of that issue, gives it grip, and a little protection as well.

"The 10.5-inch device is also expected to be slightly taller than the current 9.7-inch iPad, while potentially being slightly thicker than the 9.7-inch iPad's 6.1mm thickness."

Makes sense... You wouldn't have a bigger screen, and thinner.

Hmmm...7mm side bezels, with 19mm top and bottom bezels...

Exactly the same as the iPad mini 4, which I just measured as I'm using one now to write this post. That's compared to my wife's 9.7" Pro which has 9mm side bezels with the same 19mm top and bottom bezels.

So basically this will have iPad mini bezels but on a 10.5" screen. This seems more and more a direct correlation. The 10.5" iPad Pro is going to be to the 12.9" Pro what the iPad mini is to the iPad.

Would be a clean line-up going forward.
  • 10.5" & 12.9" iPad Pro
  • 7.9" & 9.7" iPad
Maybe the iPad mini won't die after all??
  • 7.9" & 10.5" with same 326 pixel per inch screen, same size UI touch points, and same form factor proportions
  • 9.7" & 12.9" with same 264 pixel per inch screen, same size UI touch points, and same form factor proportions
Could it be that the iPad mini 4 is still called that instead of simply iPad mini because it didn't get any new parts at all? Possibly it could be that it will get something at some point this year or next and revert to the simple iPad mini moniker?

Could it also be that conflicting rumour reports about a 7.9" Pro model was actually confusion over this 10.5" model, which could very easily (but most likely won't be) called iPad Pro mini?

It seems pretty obvious at the moment that this 10.5" is most probably intended to be a replacement for the 9.7" Pro. It will most likely be discontinued when the 10.5" launches, so if you want a 9.7" iPad that supports Apple Pencil, probably the time is now!

I wonder what percentage of iPad Pro users have the Pencil and use it regularly.

Apparently only 30% of Surface Pro users use the Pen, so Microsoft stopped including it with the latest iteration.

I think the reason Apple doesn't include the Pencil is that they don't want to give the impression that it's an essential accessory (which it isn't).

As an artist and former Mac enthusiast, I'll definitely be considering the new iPad Pro. I have a tablet PC but I'm starting to lose faith in that form factor.

I can see plenty. The iPad Pro with Apple Pencil is what I'd been wishing for ever since the first generation iPad. I use my iPad Pro almost exclusively for art. I think that's one use case that justifies its existence. Perhaps that doesn't matter to you personally, but there are other people who do different things.

But if you don't want an Apple Pencil, might as well not get the Pro and get the $329 iPad instead?

what's the point of 10.5" iPad anyway? isn't iPad & tablet market in general pretty much dead? also what's the point of having both 9.7 and 10.5? unless 10.5 is replacing 9.7,the size difference is minimal and makes no sense.
The iPad still sells twice the quantities of the Mac.

He's not wrong about the size though, is he? The 10.5" is most probably going to replace the 9.7" Pro leaving that size screen for the non-pro line going forward.
[doublepost=1496074704][/doublepost]Just a quick size comparison calculation

The 10.5" 4:3 Screen has a 266.7mm diagonal meaning from a portrait point of view:
Screen Height: 213.4mm
Screen Width: 160.0mm

Surrounding Bezels
7mm on the sides
19mm top & bottom

Chamfered edges
1.5mm all around

Total dimensions
Device Height: 213.4+19+19+1.5+1.5= 254.4mm
Device Width: 160.0+7+7+1.5+1.5= 177.0mm

Comparisons to other Apple Devices

Retina Macbook
12" 16:10 Screen
Device Width: 280.5mm
Device Depth: 196.5mm

12.9" iPad Pro
12.9" 4:3 Screen
Device Height: 305.7mm
Device Width: 220.6mm

9.7" iPad Pro
(Double checked my assumptions by measuring out based on screen size, and was pretty accurate)
9.7" 4:3 Screen
Screen Height: 197.1mm
Screen Width: 147.8mm screen
9mm side bezels
19mm top & bottoms bezels
1.5mm chamfered edges.
Calculated Device Height: 240.1mm (+0.1mm)
Actual Device Height: 240.0mm
Calculated Device Width: 168.8mm (-0.7mm)
Actual Device Width: 169.5mm

I cannot justify an iPad purchase anymore. My ipad pro 9.7 is snappy and the perfect size for me.

Maybe in the next 3 or 4 years when my ipad starts to slow down, I'll buy another.

But at this point, no.

iOS needs to be made more functional for iPad.
