Why so focused on the iPhone for new releases? If they want to push a new product category, releasing it new tech is a perfect opportunity and sales stimulus.

I always hated it that the iPad slacked behind the iPhone. Because it's a professional device it should be equipped with the better technology.

No interest at all. OLED would be interesting but that isn't happening anytime soon. For that matter, OLED macs would be even better.

It's up to Apple to make ipads worthwhile or more than just a toy for a kid or doc viewer with pencil.

My iPad mini 2 is borderline unusable. Takes forever to load anything, time for an upgrade.

I traded in my iPad mini 2 at BB last week. Best Buy is doing a promotion right now - trade it in now for a $150 gift card (which I think is fair), and put that towards a new iPad now or later this year! Plus, $100 off the iPad Pro 128gb model right now, too. $250 total off ain't bad...

(I'm not a BB employee, just trying to help )

The 12.9" iPad Pro is the only model that has a delivery date of April 10 - 17. Every color, every size, wifi and wifi/cellular - all have the same delivery date. The 9.7" iPad Pro is available now.
Usually this means that there will be a new model very soon, at least by the delivery date. But, who knows anymore.

I am kind of feeling that the 10.5" iPad will not be an iPad Pro model, but instead a replacement for the iPad Air.

So we could see an April event for the iPad Pro 9.7 and 12.9 refreshes and then hold the iPad 10.5 either to October or perhaps in conjunction with the iPhone 8.
Yes, I was beginning to suspect that myself. It would make some sense of the rumours, as it would seem very odd to have a bezel-free 10.5" Pro model plus an updated 12.9" Pro model with bezels.

We would end up with 3 distinct iPad ranges - the standard (and more budget-friendly) iPad range, a new premium range to replace the Air (without bezels and with better technology such as the laminated screen), and a Pro range (with Smart Connector and Pencil support).

It just makes more sense to debut the iPhone with OLED before the iPad would. I think Apple will want to put all their marketing into the OLED iPhone before the iPad .

My assumption is there won't be an April keynote and this purported 10.5 iPad is easily Fall 2017 or later. Assuming if production of this 10.5 iPad is slated for this month, then it would be at least six months before It would be available for resale.
They shipped an OLED watch way before an OLED iPhone.

Some have speculated that the supply chain largely only knows about components and much less about the size of the slab of aluminium and therefore a 10.5" iPad (in the existing 9.7"-iPad body size) could be accompanied with a 12.9" iPad with reduced bezels as well.

Perhaps I am in the minority here, but why will there potentially be a 9.7, 10.5 and 12.9? Really who needs all of these configurations? Not to mention the iPad mini.
Who needed two different 9.7" iPad models (as they have existed since the release of the 3rd-gen iPad)? What Apple is doing here is to differentiate the two price points per size class more by updating both price points and a small size difference instead of just keeping last years model around. Already before the recent update, the price differential between between the two 9.7" iPad offerings had widened from $100 to $200.

So you take your iPad in, get $150 GC, walk out. No need to buy anything on the spot? My mom has a 16GB Air I want her to dump for the new 32GB iPad. Thinking she could take her Air in and get the GC then go online and order the iPad and get another $25 GC w/ that promotion.

Doesn't make sense to have a small website refresh with some new items just to have a keynote a month later. Why not save it all and have an even bigger event? The only reason I could think of doing that would be that they are holding out to have the next big product reveal in the Steve Jobs theater.

My money is on a Fall release, particularly if the 10.5 inch iPad will have any of the features heading for the flagship iPhone this year.
Limited, staggered release, wide-spread rumours about a March event that don't materialise would be consistent with production issues that changed/delayed plans.

I'd agree IF there was a Pro 9.7 and a Pro 10.5. But I'm thinking now that Apple will nix the Pro 9.7 and 9.7 size will only belong to the iPad line. The 10.5 will either be Pro or, as someone else suggested, the new Air. My money would be on Pro, it makes more marketing sense to just have two lines, each in two distinct sizes. Of course yet to see what becomes the Mini as far as updates go. Obviously it won't be getting Pencil support (boo!) so probably won't get updated this year (again, boo!).

No way the 10.5" (if that's the size) will launch before the iPhone if it will use the upcoming A11 SOC.
If, yes, if. But not when it gets an A10X. Do you remember the story that the 12.9" iPad was supposed to ship before the iPhone 6s and was thus planned to have an A8X. But as the 12.9" iPad ship date slipped, the chip design group was given the task/challenge to get an A9X ready for October/November 2015. This switch of processor is an officially confirmed story.

"Among all the other aforementioned things that don't make sense regarding the rumor that a 10.5-inch iPad is imminent is the idea that the new design language would debut on an iPad, not an iPhone."

Actually it does. Consider the fact that the technology in an iPad is different and simpler than an iPhone - more room to spread it out and to work with, as well as no 3-D touch due to screen size. Add to that the desire to increase iPad sales....

More points towards iPad development before iPhone than away.
And looking at the bezels, the iPad mini already has noticeably thinner bezels than the 9.7" (or 12.9") iPad.

Is everybody smoking the good stuff? The iPad Pro 12.9 is gonna turn 2 if the event isn't till fall. No way Apple holds off on any update whatsoever till then. If they do I might not buy an iPad again, by then I will have not had an iPad for 6 months.

Come on people, this isn't Rocket Science ... it will be announced in April, when Apple rolls-out it's Clips social video app to the public ... one of the key features of the 10.5" iPad Pro, as well as Clips, will be support for what Apple refers to as "Wide" Color, and which at least one other company has RE-labeled it with a more Female-friendly title !

BTW, the new $329 iPad is pure junk ! ... certainly NOT something Steve Jobs would have approved of !

The Steve would not approve is old now, and how would you know? Did you revive him from the grave to ask him?

Yes, no obligation to buy a new iPad with the gift card. You can use it anytime after you get it.

The Pro range are niche products. I suspect we'll see a 2-3 year update cycle. The more mass market iPad ranges will probably stick to a 12-18 month upgrade cycle.

Does anyone think there's a possibility that they're shifting the announcement of new iPad technology to the same event they make iPhone announcements? Would be interesting -- if new iPad models will have similar tech as new high-end iPhone, shift the announcements to be at the same time and then have "soft" updates of the lower end models of stuff.

They shipped an OLED watch way before an OLED iPhone.

Which was already noted . But an OLED iPhone compared to a 38/42 MM display is a substantial difference, especially when you're considering where 69% of Apple's net sales in the iPhone. I think it's evident where Apple will place the emphasis on a show stopper iPhone versus a shaky wearable market. (Even though the Apple Watch has a great display.)

Apple is diluting the brand honestly. I get they want to reach as many people as possible but damn, I am now starting to get confused on how many different models/variants they have now.

Mini 4, iPad, Pro 9.7", Pro 12.9" now a 10" variant?

MacBook, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro Retina, MacBook Pro Non TB, MacBook Pro TB 13", TB 15"

Ugh.

The mini is probably dead. The 9.7" will be an inexpensive lower line iPad. The 10.5" and 12.9" will be the pro lines starting at a higher $599 price point. I think it's a good line up imo.

Prediction: everyone has gotten it all wrong. The new 10.5" device is the new flagship iPhone, the iPhone X XL Plus. It costs $1299 but ships with free AirPods so you don't have to try to hold the thing up to your ear.
Oh, don't be silly now. How will the current Apple include FREE AirPods when they are still nickeling and diming every single bloody dongle?
Someone high up in Apple must have lost their mind if they would include ANYTHING for FREE! (Well, they can't really lose something when they don't have it to begin with...but that is another story)
