You need to be able to run pro apps. You are right, but one has to love it.
If I were to get an iPad Pro (And I'm not saying I am), it be in conjunction of my laptop, not replacing it. I am impressed with its features and couple that with iOS 11 and its potent product to be sure.

I love the 12.9 and can't believe they would drop it. Killer app is Texture allowing me to read dozens of magazines at close to normal size with awesome color. I could live with a smaller iPad.

The 12.9 is also perfect for us musicians! Displaying sheet music on an approximately A4-size screen is wonderful, especially when coupled with a brilliant app like ForScore. Scores on the iPad are also a God-send in badly light environments. I have used an iPad 4 for the same purpose for several years, but the screen is simply too small for me.

Yes t
I'm sorry Apple but compared to macOS I still see this as a very expensive consumption device.

Yes totally agree this will not be replacing a Mac anytime soon. Maybe one day the Mac Book but certainly not the Pro.
Tim has other ideas though.

I agree that the iPad is becoming more useful, but until I can do EXACTLY what I do with my MBP on an iPad it isn't and can't and wasn't designed to be a standalone device.

Also, suggesting someone is going to "sound like an idiot" because they disagree is absurd, and makes me lose all credibility with a tech reviewer and his/her review. People have different use cases and NO ONE will sound like an idiot if they can defend their position logically, even as far as stating only their own use case.

Lastly, anyone suggesting the 10.5" would replace a 12.9" is also making an absurd statement. Just as with the 17" MBP, it's more than just the larger screen (although for the iPad there isn't much else). Having a larger battery is a boon, and with multitasking getting better and better it's a no brainer to grab the 12.9" It's not that much larger than the 10.5" and gives you more of what you need in a device where the only interaction is going to be via the screen.

Macs too,way too expensive. Just fancy Starbucks machines...
I mean 4,2k$ for a maxed out 15" machine cmon apple you can do better..
Huh? I run 3 engineering companies from my Mac, and still have time to cruise this web portal. Granted, I don't go to Starbucks aside from buying a couple bags of their whole bean expresso. My billings? About $15k per workday…

Compare the cost of Merlin to MS Project, there's a start…

Apple are a bunch of pretentious idiots... so us developers can now develop on your "full-fledged computer"? Hmmm, I don't see the X-Code app icon.
BTW, I ordered the new iPad as a nice consumption device, not a replacement for my laptop.

They already have Swift Playgrounds. It’s not full Xcode, but then, I’m not sure you appreciate what an enormous App Xcode is. It will take several years to port, during which time most of the legacy components will be replaced by shiny, new ones.

You only need to look at Xcode 9. There’s a totally rewritten source editor, supporting more modern text features (hey, isn’t it strange that it works very similarly to the editor in the Playgrounds App? Hmmm....). There’s a new build system, wireless installation and debugging, and better automatic signing. They are rebuilding fundamental IDE components from the ground up. You can bet your bottom dollar they are not investing all that time and effort without thinking about portability (the same way Apple rewrote iWork to use a common, cross-platform engine).

Apple certainly do want Xcode on the iPad. The thing is, the current Xcode (8) is in no shape to be ported anywhere. I expect we’ll see it next year, or the year after at latest. Getting people in to coding, and lowering the barriers to entry (especially in developing countries), are definitely priorities for Apple, and being able to build and deploy an App from an iOS device, is a huge step in that direction.

I think they mean in the sense of for most customers, not pro users. For me, the iPad replaces everything on my Mac except of course, Affinity Designer and Final Cut Pro.

And the developers say that Affinity Designer for iPad Pro is well under way.

I do wonder why Apple doesn't walk the talk and bring their own pro apps to this device.

I look at Garageband on iOS and think it is a pretty well specified app but iMovie on the other hand is severely lacking. I'm not expecting FCP on the iPad but iMovie could use a lot more features to make it a suitable app for the iPad Pro. Even just the ability to add text where I want instead of as a simple title would make it much more useful to me.

Discontinuing 12.9
Confirmed!
Always when there is a certain group that loves a product , stating on macrumors that they really can' t see apple discontinuing it, apple discontinues it.
Lol!
But would love an ipad pro 11.3 to 11.6 inch with the same design as the 10.5, slightly bigger than the 10.5 with the same sidebezels, but slightly smaller chin and forehead.
For me that would be the perfect ipad pro.

I don't use FCP so I'm speaking from the outside, but it sounds like the ProApps have enough work to do convincing users to trust FCPX (https://medium.com/@alex4d/apple-fi...eturn-to-spotlight-after-5-years-861449291d0e - dated about half a year ago).

So there's more to the decision than simply what is best for the iPad; they also need to consider what's best for FCP.

I since discovered LumaFusion for video editing on the iPad and haven't looked back. Awesome app.
