and i was wanting to experience it but not knowing how to get leopard on the DA is going to be the deal breaker until other means are available like xpostfacto or other. i know that once i do get the CPU upgrade (dual G4 1.4ghz) that it will remove the virtual cpu speed block for slower then a G4 867mhz. the only thing i would still have to contend with is the Machine ID block. since i have no other way to install it.

EDIT just found a guide
https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=4351400#post4351400

just one of the way's to get past the installer blocks if you down own a system that is under the allowed systems

I don't think CPU upgrades will work with the installer. I am not positive on that, but I think it might ignore those.

The machine ID block seems to be for machines Apple deems a no no. I left that section in mine and it didn't fail me out for having a G4. As long as the CPU section is edited, for Powermac G4 towers as least, you should be fine as far as installing.

Here is that section, as of 9A557:
Code:
var badMachines = ['iMac','PowerBook1,1','PowerBook2,1', 'AAPL,Gossamer', 'AAPL,PowerMac G3', 'AAPL,PowerBook1998', 'AAPL,PowerBook1999'];

You could remove the whole section, in theory. I will test that when I get the GM copy.

so even if i get a cpu upgrade the virtual cpu limit would still be in place and reject it and be seen as a 533mhz system still ?

i know the machine ID limit would stop me even if i passed the virtual cpu speed limit. would the cpu upgrade work like it suppose to or will it not work at all ?

your way seems to kill both the cpu limit and the machine ID check.

i just hope the cpu upgrade will work like its suppose to in leopard.

I'll be installing 10.5 on my modded dual 1.3 GHz Sawtooth (orig 500 MHz) on the 26th around 8:00 pm. PM me then to see if it works (via the install DVD).

I am sure the upgrade will work. I just don't know if the installer will see it as that speed, or it will see it as a 533 machine still. We will know soon. For some reason I just think I have read that OS X doesn't recognize CPU upgrades when it comes to these sort of things. I may be wrong, so don't hold me too it.

boy i hope this all works out, i cant wait to see if it installs and runs on a G3, and i cant wait to see if the installer sees a cpu upgrade as what it is or at the stock cpu speed.

as a test i would like to see someone edit and remove the Machine ID test, and keep the virtual cpu limit in place just to see if a cpu upgrade that is above the 867mhz limit will fool the installer or not.

i know that there is a QS 867mhz model, so i wonder if a cpu upgrade on a slower then 867mhz QS will allow Leopard to install with no modding the installer, i guess it depends on if the machine ID on the slower QS matched the QS 867mhz model or not and if the virtual cpu limit can be fooled by a cpu upgrade. that also brings me to the question, i wonder if there is any sort of cpu model check in place to see if its a cpu upgrade or a Apple stock CPU

first of all, thanks for all the info on this topic.
so i'm guessing running Leopard on a G4 1.67 powerbook with 2Gb RAM
and an ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 with 128MB of DDR SDRAM would be
just fine,right?
my only worry is the DVD player that i've heard requires a 1.6 processor
at least, will my system lag or would i have to close all apps to watch a
movie?
has anyone installed Leopard on a g4 powerbook?

you would have no issues with your G4 powerbook with those spec's, for one reason its a Leopard supported machine. and 2 its above the G4 867mhz, 512MB ram system requirement. this topic is to get Leopard to install on unsupported systems , something your G4 powerbook doesn't need help doing.

that 1.6ghz DVD requirement is for the advanced De-interlacing algorithms, you don't need a 1.6ghz CPU just to play DVD movies with the standard de-interlacing enabled. and even then you have that covered since your powerbook meets the 1.6ghz system requirement for that, and even then its something you can enable and disable

thanks a million!
i didn't know you could enable/disable that feature!
cool, i'll start backing up my stuff starting now,
gotta prepare for it :)
thanks again!

it doesnt work on a g3, itll boot but in verbose mode it hangs before it before the hard drive is recognized

i tried it on an ibook g3/600 via firewire, g3/600 imac via firewire, g3/500 imac via firewire, and g3/500 directly into the PATA, none of em worked

so g4 seems to be the minimum, barring some kinda hack

I wonder if removing that section in the installer, would allow one to install it. It could be that there are checks in the OS that say, no no. I wish I had a G3 to try it out on.

So the general consensus seems to be that I'll be able to install Leopard with a little trickery on an 800Mhz iBook G4?

I'd sure hate to have to tell me wife that I'll be getting Leopard on my 1Ghz TiBook while she's SOL on her iBook!

It's easier to image it onto a slower G4 but suneohair has provided a way to modify the DVD installer.

I am also a proud owner of a loyal G4/400 which I recently upgraded with a cheap flashed Radeon 9800 Pro (helped a lot in Tiger so far). I would like to know how much Panther relies on the graphics card, perhaps it's a good GPU which makes the difference in system responsiveness...

An 8 year old G4 running Panther reasonably, that would be a cool thing

tiger runs great on my Sawtooth, better than Panther did. Why not try for 10.5 even (see 1st post here)

Sorry, I'm confusing all these cat names. I mean Leopard, naturally. I am currently running Tiger, too.

How does one get 40gigs on to 30gigs?

Well I have Leopard installed on my 1.33ghz iBook and it's running fine, but I want to try to get it running on my GF's 800mhz iBook with 1,128meg ram.

She's only got a 30gig in there. Now from what I read, I could TRY copying the hard drive over, but someone said I just have to copy certain folders, I donno how effective that would be.

Sounds like I'd have better luck sitting here and trying to reverse engineer the cd like other people and burn me a copy of my install cd hacked to install on 800mhz.

Any suggestions folks?
