Ideally you run a checksum of each file in the system folder against a known good checksum, and if the checksum matches, you can know for certain that your files exist and aren't corrupted.

Given the highlighted non-best practices Apple was using on their iForgot password reset system, I wouldn't be surprised if they aren't doing this either, but ideally, you get the idea...

thats why i said to check the hexes

Wow. Should I assume there's something wrong with my rMBP? Which iStat version are you running?

I don't think there's something wrong with yours, though. It depends a lot on the pages that are open, I'd say. As soon as I have multiple pages with flash elements or fancy Javascript open, my temperatures go up, too. Plus my mac sits on a stand.
I think it's just a little variation from the manufacturing, and I got lucky. But as long as your MBP doesn't run into throttling all the time when you push it, I wouldn't worry.

Although this thread has changed to a temp discussion, thought I would update for all.

Went to the Apple store yesterday and they ran tests and confirmed the fan was not running. They opened the laptop and tried a reset and ensured the fan connector had not come loose. The Fan has stopped.

As the Apple store is an hour away, I will be taking it to a authorised repairer that I pass on the way to work each day and have them repair. I was told about 3 - 4 days by Apple to repair.

I will get it repaired and see what the results look like then.

Thanks

Yes, I thought about that but I have flash blocker installed. Meh, will not worry too much as long as throttling does not occur.

Glad you found the issue. Hope it fixes your performance issues :)

And the Saga continues...........
I take my computer to work today, planning to drop it into an Authorised repairer around Lunch time. I start it up at work. And what would you know Left Fan is now running.

I go down all the same, and they suggest that I see how it goes. There would be a delay in the delivery of parts due to the Easter break. SO I go back to work. I decide to move my Virtual Machine to my Mac and run it from there for the day and see how it goes.

I put some load on the machine around 50% and the Temp skyrockets 100+ Degrees.

I am currently doing a DVD Rip using around 35% CPU and the Temp is at 97 Degrees.

Left Fan - 3300RPM
Right Fan - 3000RPM

This is not right is it?

It's not right. Even when ripping DVD i never get more than 72C. Never seen 80+ on my retina.

Took it to a Mac Authorised repairer again today. They ran some tests and the RAM was faulting. The service technician suggested that it maybe a sensor issue (causing Fans to not spin up, high temps, RAM issue. The RAM Fault my just be a symptom of the issue.

IT is with them now and hopefully have a repaired unit soon.

I will post once I get my computer back and repaired

Surprising. When I play games I easily reach 85 - 90 degrees Celsius. Just FYI, there are more accurate system temperature monitors then iStat.

When I have all cores under full load I also hit over 90°C.

About more accurate monitors - how? they all just use the same hardware sensors, so how could some be more accurate than others? The only things I could understand as giving you false temps are a too-slow update frequency of the readings and out-of-date software that misinterprets the data.

Some apps have yet to be updated for the latest CPU`s so temperature measurement can differ from app to app, ones that I am aware of that are updated are; Bresink`s Temperature Monitor, UltraFan & SMC Fan Control. You can see up to an over 10C difference

At 50% load i don't think that you should be seeing this level of temperature, 100% (800% full load 8 cores) i would expect to see 100C+ on a Retina, and that is exactly how my own 2.3 performs.

Only thing i can think of for the DVD rip is the app utilising the Nvidia GPU and offloading any work to it. The discrete GPU makes a significant difference to system temp as a whole and fan RPM`s Mac`s employ several sensors across the system to acquire data for thermal management.

I got the machine back this afternoon. A turn around time of 24hours I was pretty impressed.
Report stated.
Confirmed issues with sensor on the logic board. Replace Logic board and Fan.

Computer passed AST and cooling diagnostic test. No Fault Found.

I have been running it for half hour now. CPU sitting at 62C with less than 10% load.

I have run a full load test using (yes > /dev/null &). Got CPU's to 100% temp went to 104c fans went to around 5500RPM - 5800RPM.

Is this still too high?

No my 2.3 Retina hits 104c under max load, fans the same, and will pull the temp down into the 90C`s

I would say into its bounds, and the most important thing, fans working properly.
Mine also blow as a 747 when I am under Windows w/ bootcamp and playing Assassin's Creed II.

By the way, there are very good tools for Windows related to OverClocking and monitoring, maybe I could make a test under Windows.
Aish...I remember a few years those hardcore times choosing every part of my PC's and reaching every hw limit :')

Just for the sake of closing the loop.

I have the machine back and gave it a good run last night.
Temps and fans seemed to be running ok. Still a little concerned with high temps but I guess they are designed to under clock if they are getting cooked.

So Started BF3 within Bootcamp. It hit 31FPS and stuck there. Would not move down or up. Settings were 1280 x 800 Low Details.

I thought it was odd so I set it to 1680 x 1050 and Medium settings. Still getting 31FPS. So had to be that FPS was being capped. This was resolved by the Power Settings in Windows. Set this to performance instead of balanced and now getting 40 - 43 FPS in game at 1680 x 1050.

A Hardcore gamer might not find this to be acceptable, but for me an average Joe it is all I need.

How is everyone else going with there performance issues.

Mine was obviously Hardware related and not software.

Also using the nVidia software program, set the performance for a single display rather than a multi-display setting.

Could you explain this, please? What do you mean? Are you using this and getting better results? Which software?

Hey Can anyone compare benchmarks with me so I see if my MacBook is working right I used the Heaven benchmark 4.0 This was done on Windows 7 Boot Camp with the higher end Retina MacBook pro Please use the same settings

Sorry, I didn't open the image and I was on Tapatalk so I couldn't read what was on it. Mine is a 2.3/16GB. Want me to test it as well or are you just asking users with the same CPU?

be cool if you could. And also I've been monitoring my clock speeds It seems to bounce between 900 and 700 is this normal?

If you wish to do it. Just right click your desktop and load up nVidia Control Panel. From there just go to Manage 3D settings then within Features there will be Multi-display/mixed-GPU acceleration. Directly to the right change it from Multi-display to single display.
