Does this include the student discount, is the 10% off above that? Does anyone know.

Someone should call an Apple store and ask them.. hypothetically... if there were a special discount tonight, would it stack with the Educational discount. Then report back here and let us know!

student discounts are not applied @ apple stores.
if they were, they wouldn't apply multiple discounts.

Discounts

This issue w/ the discounts is quite confusing. I almost am wondering if it's a "per store" policy. When I went to my local Apple Store yesterday in Clarendon, VA they said they WOULD be honoring my federal employee discount for purchase of Panther. I assume this applies the same to the education discounts.

yeah, that's what it was last year ... any non-CPU item.
Are you sure about this? The article just said 10% off any computer or 10% off anything else with the purchase of Panther.

My question is: What about us poor unfortunate souls that live too far away from an Apple store? There aren't any in my state and I'm pretty sure CompUSA doesn't know anything about this. I called there yesterday asking about G4 iBooks and the idiot working there (He's an Apple employee, supposed "genius") didn't even know the G4 iBook had been released!!! He was trying to convince me that the G4 processor was only available in the PowerBook, and that the iBooks were all G3. He also didn't know anything about Panther being released this week. They are really scraping the bottom of the barrel when they hire Apple Geniuses lately. I don't even own a Mac (yet) and I know more than most of them do just from reading this site.

On the one hand, this makes perfect sense, b/c if you are buying a new computer, you will be getting panther for free, unlike all of the other people who are paying $130. However I have heard stories on other forums of people buying multiple computers on last year's jaguar night, for the purpose of getting the 10% discount on their machines. So does the 10% discount apply to laptops and other computers?

The discount definitely depends on the store you go to. The Menlo Park Mall Apple store will not let you walk out the door if you mention that you are eligible for some type of discount online. I go there all the time and mention that I buy online using my State & Local Government Employees discount. They (apple techs) speak to the manager who has always honored it. It’ll show up as a Customer Service Discount on the bill. The SoHo store in NYC only accept EDU-discounts (and that’s if you mention it) “No exceptions"

Both the Apple stores in Tampa and Atlanta have always honored hardware discounts for students. Stacking discounts is another matter entirely, however.

The edu discount should apply at Apple Stores. My family has used them in both Buffalo, NY, and Short Hills, NJ. You have to ask a sales rep about them, and provide your student ID on the spot. All of the educational pricing is brought up in their POS system (or as is my experience shopping in those stores).

Now if only they'd open an Apple Store in Toronto... <sigh>

doesn't make sense

Isn't the point of a discount to lure customers in? i.e. to make more people show up and buy 10.3 than would without a discount?

By making a discount secret, Apple is essentially just giving money away for no actual benefit. Which doesn't make a lot of sense.

Maybe the point is to take the already hyped up people and push them over the impulse buying edge by springing a discount on them. It worked on me w/ 10.2 - I ended up buying an iPod upgrade.

If I bring my UTD 10.3 package with me, do you think they will give me the discount on an iSight? Or do I have to buy 10.3 /at/ the store tonight?

My local Apple Store at the Chestnut Hill Mall said that the educational discount applies to Apple hardware only. Sadly they don't allow the educational discount on any of there software. Our local University Store has great educational discounts on software.

Will be anxious to see just what the discount will be tonight. This time if I like the offer, just may be ready to take the plunge.

The question is if new hardware buyers are going to get BOTH the educational discount and the 10% night of Panther release. Obviously nobody can answer for a certainty, but somebody must know whether on the night of Jaguar whether the Edu discount and 10% were stackable. Anybody remember?

I just bought an new G4 iBook, and I MISSED the delivery by an hour while I was in class. But what I'm thinking is I probably don't even want to open it, as I can return it without any additional charges, and just buy it tonight with a possible discount.

It's too bad the 10% discount doesn't apply to computers.

I'm waiting until Panther ships with the PowerBooks to grab one, but I imagine they still have some of them with Jaguar preinstalled.

Does anyone know what they did about this last year? It'd be silly to get a Jaguar-equipped PowerBook on the "night of the Panther," and have to pay $20 for the upgrade by mail.

I only ask because I was told they'd have to get rid of remaining stock first, and that it wouldn't happen exactly on the 24th.

Special pricing does vary from store-to-store, and I honestly think it's not a matter of Apple policy as much as it is meeting per-store sales goals.

At my college store, we had pricing on Powerbooks below Apple's standard educational price, and I heard reports of our local Apple store matching our price at least once.

The Valley Fair mall store here in San Jose has been honoring educational discounts on everything up until now... but many people have told me that they are adamantly refusing to sell Panther at anything less than $129, at least for the kickoff. People have also told me that the Valley Fair store employees are jerks, and the Palo Alto store is much better. This is just me passing on what I heard, I've never actually been inside.

the impression i got was:

-10% off computers

or

-10% off other stuff if you buy panther

i think this makes the most sense because when you buy a computer, you are effectively buying panther anyway..?

i'm kinda skeptical that edu. discount can be combined with the 10% offer, but i guess i will go and find out.

i'm not sure where people are getting the info about edu software discounts, but if it's an apple product, i'm pretty sure you can get an edu discount for software at apple stores. what you cannot get is third-party software edu discounts at apple stores..?

i won't be purchasing panther at the apple store unless i can get an edu. discount...

Bad news for me guys. Just called the Chestnut Hill, Ma store and they haven't heard anything about a 10% off sale in conjunction with Panther. Anyone else contact them or the one in Cambridge? Thanks.

10% discount does not apply to education discount

I just went to the Apple Store in Cambridge, MA, and the educational discount cannot be used with the 10% discount. The 10% discount applies to all computers. If you buy Panther, you can also get a 10% discount on everything else.
