The Wall Street Journal over the weekend profiled iPhone usage among employees of Apple's longtime rival Microsoft, noting that approximately 10,000 Microsoft employees, representing about 10% of the company's global headcount, were accessing their work e-mail accounts via iPhone last year.
Some Microsoft workers take pains to hide their iPhones. While rank-and-file workers tend to use the iPhone openly around peers, some conceal them within sight of more senior executives. One Microsoft worker said he knows several colleagues who try to disguise their iPhones with cases that make them look more like generic handsets.

"Maybe once a year I'm in a meeting with Steve Ballmer," said this employee. "It doesn't matter who's calling, I'm not answering my phone."
The report notes that Microsoft last year changed its corporate mobile phone reimbursement policies to cover only devices running Windows Mobile, although company executives have stated that the move was a cost-cutting measure rather than an attempt to clamp down on employee usage of devices from Microsoft's competitors.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has famously objected to his employees' iPhone usage, even singling out an iPhone-toting Microsoft employee at a company meeting and playfully pretending to stomp on the device.

Somewhat related as I was talking to my neighbor today who works for a company that is a sub-contractor for Verizon. He has an iPhone so I asked him if he hides it when he goes to the Verizon headquarters--he said he might as well hide it since there is no ATT signal inside the building. :D

"although company executives have stated that the move was a cost-cutting measure rather than an attempt to clamp down on employe usage of devices from Microsoft's competitors."

oh, THAT'S what it was. COST-CUTTING. whew, mystery solved.

because requiring only windows mobile devices is... cheaper. somehow.

do these guys really think we believe them when they say this stuff, or is it just a reflex action to make up ridiculous motivations rather than be honest for once?

And .005% of Apple workers use something other than an iPhone. Sounds like a good statistic.

I've never used a windows phone long enough to commet on it.

wondering if apple has such rules on their employess? would it ban nexus one?

off topic: Bill Gates ban his children from getting any apple product (including iPod touch and iPhones), it must be tuff for them lol.

HAHAHA, just by covering those who use a windows mobile phone would see a savings of about 99%.

This really is not news, must be a slow news week.
Microsoft employees are not bound to only using Microsoft products, i betcha some of them even have Wii's and Playstations as well.

So what?

Microsoft employees can buy whatever phones they like.

I expect SonyEricsson employees use Nokia phones, and vice versa.

Slow news day - another filler story to get in the advertising $$$

right, because MS employees are pretty hard pressed for cash and the reimbursement makes it easier for them to put bread on the table.....

Can you picture Mr. Jobs trying to tell Lisa not to use any phone she wanted? I would not want to be in the same room unless I was wearing full body armor and heavy hearing protection. Picture Hiroshima, Nagasaki and the island of Bikini.
