Apple is still in the process of switching over the mobile Point of Sale units in their stores from Windows Mobile devices to iPod Touch base devices.

That was a while back wasn't it? I thought I read Apple were being pressured to make the Apple iPOd Touch solution a 'product' rather than just an in house system as other companies were clamoring to use it too.

AFAIK the switch over started at the end of Oct. last year and I've heard that some stores are still using WinMo devices.

I used to LOATHE those POS Windows Mobile devices when I worked behind the bar. They were so bulky and the styles was a pain, especially when you're rushing and it's crowded. Not to mention the weight of the device would almost always irritate the waistline of any pants you were wearing. The iPod Touches utilized now are slick.

take a look at Engadget's coverage today of the newly unveiled Windows Phone 7 Series Marketplace. it looks hot.

Hot??? If Apple had put this out, the technorati would be screaming about style over substance, form over function. Hipster design gone mad. The goofy text spilling off the screen, the gigantic icons on the home screen that take up 1/6th of your screen to tell you how many email messages you have, massive app icons (6 to a screen? Really?)...this is the kind of stuff that fills the Apple-haters with rage.

But since it's from Microsoft, they're celebrating the spectacle. From the Engadget peanut gallery (notoriously pro-Microsoft, of course):

"Microsoft your my homey."

"Seriously, in LOVE."

"That AP app makes me cry tears of joy."

Load up on page flip transitions and they're completely snowed. Bizarre. My bet is using this thing for more than a day would become tedious to the extreme. Finger flicking gone wild. Only time will tell, of course, but these demos scream pure eye candy at the expense of usability.

At least Microsoft allow employees to connect to their work email. In my office iPhones are banned from the corporate network, you have to buy a blackberry otherwise.

The fact that they can check work email means that the Exchange servers are configured to allow it. So clearly whoever made that decision isn't sticking it to iPhones.

What a joke. They might have something with the xBox games on the phone though. That's all I'll give them at the moment. I love xBox Live, even though my xBox 360 had to be sent in for repairs 3 times.

What a complete non-story.. 20% of GM employees drive Fords.. 40% of Pepsi employees drink Coke.. Who cares!

How many Apple employees use WinMo? That, I believe, is the real question that we want to know the answer to. Probably 5, if that.

Last time I checked, Microsoft had 90,000 employees, not 10,000.

Someone didn't read the article...

The reverse is just as true - if WP7S was from Apple.. people like you would be all over the MR forums drooling over its "innovative and ground-breaking UI". Just look at iPad forums (and iPad concept isn't exactly on the cutting edge of innovation!)

You're right, the time will tell whether WP7S will be a true success.. But for now, let's just agree that Microsoft has put out a very interesting modern mobile OS.. which, if nothing else, will make other key players in this space (namely Apple and Google) work even harder to compete.. and hopefully not just compete by filing lawsuits.

Indeedy.

My former Veep foolishly walked into Coke with an off brand of bottled water. She was asked to discard the water and provided with the Coke brand. It's common practice.

Unlikely, and irrelevant since WP7S isn't from Apple and never would be from Apple. WP7S confuses dazzle with usability. The amazing thing to me is that the typical "substance over style" crowd seems to be so wowed by it. Again, a few page flip animations seem to have gone a long way.

And your argument is like saying I would think it was cool if Apple Store employees did the Electric Slide in-store. No, I would still think it was completely lame - and fortunately Apple would never do it (thus the point is moot).

Not sure why this is a big deal. Go to a Ford production plant and check out all the Hondas and Toyotas in the parking lot. I work at a hospital and still go to another facility for care (Mayo). It doesn't mean much. Heck, just yesterday at Starbucks I saw one of the employees drinking Dunkin Donuts coffee...

It's reasons such as the above that make me loathe corporate America. Are they that childish and threatened by the competition that having a non-Coke product (water at that) in the room makes then throw a tantrum? What's amusing in the story isn't so much the tantrum as the replacement of the non-Coke product with THEIR own brand.

I find it entertaining that so many people are like "SO WHO CARES" or "Doesn't everyone who knows anything know this already? This is news oh my god?" get over yourselves, you care enough to post, and it probably is an interesting statistic to observe now, and maybe 2 years from now - I'm glad I read that Microsoft only re-reimburses windows based mobile platforms due to "budget constraints" ... I want to know when a company is undertaking weasel-like practices

10% isnt a lot given that M$ doesnt really have a viable alternative. Once Win 7 mobile drops it will be interesting to see what happens.

only question I have is

Does Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer have his own iPhone haha, at home or maybe an iPad as soon as it comes out?
