I’m glad I was able to experience it at the tail end (Early 2015, Broadwell here) before the disastrous 2016 to 2019 models. Sadly, Apple will drop support starting with Ventura. But it still works and I’ve yet to upgrade it from Catalina.

I’m hoping to collect more Intel models as collectors items. Would love to get a 2012 and load it up with Lion.

The beginning of the end as far as upgrading the internals. The 2012 model before it with cd drive and optional matt screen was a much more versatile machine. And the price was much better too.
It was unluckily, but I do believe the trade-offs were worth it in terms of design. Although with the current prices, this is a hot debated issue.

All the praise here is quite hilarious when this forums reaction to this laptop was completely different upon release.

“CANT UPGRADE RAM? Never will buy a machine like that”
“SSD ONLY?! LOOK AT THE PRICE OF STORAGE, STICKING WITH A 1TB HDD SCREW A LITTLE WAIT TIME.”
“DVD DRIVE REMOVED?! THIS WILL NEVER LAST”
“HAH! A display is only one thing people will still choose windows with a better processor”
^
All close to verbatim.

It was an -good- laptop. The intel integrated gpu struggled with the resolution so there was stuttering difficulties unless you forced the dedicated GPU to operate all the time. Also the original Retina display on the laptops was incredibly washed out, not as bad as the MBA of the era, but it was bad.

I still remember people on this forum swearing up and down that Apple would *never* release a retina screen on any laptop or desktop because “graphics cards will never be powerful enough to drive those displays”.

These things came out only a few years later.

The experience on Intels integrated GPU's often caused stutters frame drops and more, if you read an early review of the Retinas it was always pointed out and faded as they got stronger. To actually have a smooth experience (even on the 2015) you had to enable the dedicated graphics to work all the time.

The 2012 15” Retina MacBook Pro is peak MacBook Pro value. If it didn’t stop receiving software updates it would still be perfectly modern. It even has 256GB of flash memory base storage and 8GB of RAM.

Apple finally provided the first generation that incentivizes an upgrade since the addition of the Retina Display with Apple silicon and the Mini-LED display.

I still have mine but haven’t turned it on for five years and no longer have a MagSafe charger. Tempted to buy one and get it recommissioned but I suspect the battery is probably end-of-life after five years of deep discharge.

Me too. It’s a bit slow now but the design is still sublime.

I'm wondering when I should upgrade from my 2018 512gb Intel MBP15

Depends what you use it for. That would determine how much benefit you'd get from a newer MacBook. If you just want a shiny new Mac, then probably go for the M2 MacBook Air next month. If you need top performance, but can wait, then I'd hold out for M2 Pro/Max 14" & 16" MBP's likely coming this Holiday season or next year. Or maybe you don't really need a new MacBook at all.

Have the 2015 13” still. The screen got replaced with the delimitation issue and the battery needs to be replaced but otherwise it is still a great machine!

Ordered the 15" on the first day. One of my favorite Apple products ever.

That being said, I like my M1 Max 16" even more.

My 2012 rMBP is sitting in the bottom of a drawer with a broken logic board and a corrupted OS. Never got round to getting it fixed.
